The Spirit Guide is a hostile mob added by Born in Chaos. It is a melee monster with 32 health that attacks players and drains their magic on every hit. Once it has taken damage, its next hit summons two smaller companions, the Spirit Guide Assistants. It spawns in shade and darkness in dry biomes, and its placement rule does not check the time of day.

The Spirit Guide has two related mobs. The Spirit Guide Assistant is summoned by it in combat. The Controlled Baby Skeleton has no natural spawn; a player summons it with a Bonescaller staff while wearing the Spiritual Guide Sombrero, which the Spirit Guide drops.

The Spirit Guide is a natural monster spawn with a weight of 8 and groups of one. The biome list in the table above covers 283 biomes, but a custom placement rule replaces the vanilla rule and narrows where it can actually appear. A spawn position is valid only if all of these hold:

• Light: If the block above the position can see the sky, the light level must be 4 or lower. If it cannot, the light level must be 0. Spawns happen in shade and darkness, not in open daylight.
• Biome: The biome must be a dry one: desert, badlands, or savanna, or a biome with the sandy, dry, or savanna tags, a hot tag outside the Nether, or the mineshaft mesa tag. Deep Dark and Mushroom Fields are excluded.
• Time: The rule has no time-of-day check, so a dark cave or shaded spot can produce a Spirit Guide during the day.

The Spirit Guide Assistant uses the same placement rule, with a weight of 4 and groups of two. The Controlled Baby Skeleton is never placed naturally. The spiritGuideSpawn game rule turns natural spawning of the Spirit Guide off when set to false.

Behavior

The Spirit Guide has 32 health, 3 armor, 3 attack damage, and a movement speed of 0.22. Its melee attack has a knockback of 0.9, and it has 0.2 knockback resistance and a follow range of 16 blocks.

It targets players within its follow range, and it retaliates against whatever damages it. Without a target it wanders at 0.8 speed and looks around.

Attack effects

Each melee hit on a player, monster, or other mob applies two effects, each at level I for 200 ticks (10 seconds):

• Magic Depletion
• Hunger

The hit applies nothing if the target is blocking or already has Magic Depletion. Each hit also gives Rampage for 200 ticks to every Spirit Guide Assistant within 3 blocks of the Spirit Guide.

Summoning when damaged

The Spirit Guide's reaction runs before each hit lands. It triggers only if the Spirit Guide is not on fire, does not have Magic Depletion, and has 30 or fewer health out of 32 at the moment of the hit. If so, it:

• gains Resistance II for 100 ticks (5 seconds);
• gains Magic Depletion for 260 ticks (13 seconds), which blocks a second summon during that time;
• summons two Spirit Guide Assistants, one 2 blocks to its west and one 2 blocks to its east.

A Spirit Guide at full health does not summon on the first hit it takes. After it has taken at least 2 damage, its next hit summons.

Immunities and death

The Spirit Guide takes no damage from Cactus or drowning. When it dies, it grants 16 experience and is removed 30 ticks later. The first player who kills it earns the advancement "The day of the Dead" (Kill the Spirit Guide).

Drops

The loot table is listed in the table below, with quantities for each drop. The Spiritual Guide Sombrero is the only armor it drops, and it is the key to the Controlled Baby Skeleton summon described under Related items.

Spirit Guide Assistant

The Spirit Guide Assistant has 15 health, 3 armor, 2 attack damage, and a movement speed of 0.3. It has a follow range of 16 blocks and grants 6 experience. It is more fragile than the Spirit Guide and does not apply its hit effects. It attacks players, Iron Golems, other golems, Controlled Baby Skeletons, and Dread Hounds. It gains Light Rampage when a nearby Spirit Guide attacks.

Controlled Baby Skeleton

The Controlled Baby Skeleton has 30 health, 3 armor, 6 attack damage, and a movement speed of 0.3. It has a follow range of 23 blocks and is immune to fire. Its class is tamable, but the source defines no food for it, so no item tames or heals it. It is summoned with the Sombrero and a Bonescaller staff, as described under Related items.

• Spiritual Guide Sombrero: A fire-resistant helmet with 385 durability, 3 armor, 0.5 armor toughness, and no knockback resistance. Marigolds repair it. Its tooltip says it enhances the baby skeletons summoned by the Bonescaller staff. While worn, a player standing on a solid block with open space above can right-click while holding a Bonescaller staff in either hand. This summons two Controlled Baby Skeletons beside the player, gives the player Magic Depletion for 560 ticks, and costs one durability on the staff. The summon does nothing while the player has Magic Depletion.
• Spiritual Gingerbread: Removes Magic Depletion, which clears the effect before a summon.
• Spawn eggs: Spirit Guide Spawn Egg, Spirit Guide Assistant Spawn Egg, and Controlled Baby Skeleton Spawn Egg.

Tips

• Block with a shield. A blocking player takes no Magic Depletion or Hunger from the Spirit Guide's hits.
• Light the area. Any spot brighter than the placement limit (4 under open sky, 0 in caves) cannot spawn a Spirit Guide, so torches and lanterns keep its natural spawns away from your base and routes.
• Clear Magic Depletion with Spiritual Gingerbread if you need the Sombrero's summon again soon.
• Deal with the Assistants quickly. Each one has only 15 health, but they gain Light Rampage while the Spirit Guide that summoned them keeps fighting nearby.
