Dead Forest is a cold, rainy overworld biome added by Biomes O' Plenty. It is a forest of bare and dying trees with sparse grass and dead bushes. In Fear Nightfall it is one of the horror biomes, weighted 6× during biome selection, so it is a common place to meet the pack's undead mobs and horror structures.

A larger variant, the Old Growth Dead Forest, shares the same mobs and climate and is covered in its own subsection below.

Description

Dead Forest

The biome uses the standard overworld surface with no custom surface rule. Its trees are a mix of four Biomes O' Plenty tree types chosen at random for each placement attempt: dying trees (20% of picks), tall spruce trees (30%), small dead trees (30%) and dead twiglet trees (20%). Most chunks receive two tree attempts, and about one in ten receives three. Trees are placed on the ocean floor heightmap and are not placed where water covers the ground.

The surrounding plants are dead bushes, grass patches from Biomes O' Plenty, and pumpkin patches. Wild Potatoes from Farmer's Delight also grow as a wild plant, and cave urns from Supplementaries are placed in the biome.

The biome colours are tan-olive grass (#baad64), olive foliage (#b7b763), dark blue water (#3f76e4), pale blue fog (#c0d8ff) and a blue sky (#7da2ff). Its ambient mood sound is the vanilla cave sound, played about every 300 seconds.

Old Growth Dead Forest

The Old Growth variant is a slightly warmer version of the same biome, with a temperature of 0.3 instead of 0.2. Its trees come from a different random selector: dying trees (20%), dead twiglet trees (30%), tall spruce trees (10%), small dead trees (10%) and oak (5%). When none of those picks succeeds, which is about one attempt in four, the biome places tall dead twiglet trees instead.

The surface of the Old Growth variant has podzol patches, generated where the surface noise is above 2.3. The base Dead Forest has no such rule.

Generation

Dead Forest has a temperature of 0.2 and a downfall of 0.3. It rains rather than snows, because the temperature stays above the snow threshold. The biome sits in the coldest row of Biomes O' Plenty's secondary overworld table, next to Tundra and Snowy Maple Woods. The Old Growth variant replaces it at the matching table position.

Both variants are in the vanilla stronghold_biased_to tag, so strongholds are biased toward generating in them.

In Fear Nightfall, Dead Forest takes about 0.15% of the land surface and the Old Growth variant about 0.21%. Both are horror biomes with a 6× weight, which raises their chance of being chosen over non-horror biomes in the same climate. Across the pack, horror biomes make up 11.9% of land, compared with 4.5% in the unmodified mod set. The biome also takes a share of the cave layer at y=-30, but only 0.01%.

The pack places horror structures about 30% closer together. Dead Forest can generate about 206 structures, and the Old Growth variant about 189.

Features

Underground, the biome uses the vanilla ore set: coal, copper, iron, gold, redstone, lapis lazuli and diamond, along with the buried and large diamond variants, plus dirt, gravel, granite, diorite, andesite and tuff clusters. Biome-specific ores are added on top of these:

  • Black Argillite and Infected Diamond Ore from Born in Chaos, including the deepslate version.
  • Sulfur ore and deepslate sulfur ore from Butchery. The item is Sulfur.
  • Mithril ore from Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks.

Underground, the biome also generates lava lakes, amethyst geodes and monster rooms (dungeons). Lava lakes appear at the surface as well as underground.

Mobs and structures

Dead Forest spawns a large monster list, weighted toward spiders, skeletons, creepers, slimes and zombies. Among the notable mobs in the table are Ghoul and Revenant at weight 25 each, Slime Golem at weight 25, Skeleton Creeper at weight 20, Necromancer at weight 18, and Dread Hound at weight 7. The rarest monsters include Krampus and Mutant Enderman, each at weight 1. Restless Spirit and Decaying Zombie also spawn here.

The structure list is long. The notable structures include Catacombs, Clown Caravan, Infernal Pumpkin Patch, Firewell and Ice Spider Den.

Tips

  • Expect ghouls, revenants, dread hounds and necromancers in this biome, especially after dark. Bring a light source.
  • Lava lakes can appear on the surface, so check your footing when you cross open ground, particularly in the dark.
  • Wild Potatoes grow naturally in this cold biome, which is a useful food source if you are far from farms.
  • Lakes in the biome spawn a range of fish, including several Biomes O' Plenty species such as the Cave Eel and Shadow Snapper.
  • Horror structures are placed about 30% closer together in the pack, so the biome has more structures to explore and more mobs guarding them.
