The Farmer's Delight mod (version 1.3.4) is a cooking and farming add-on for Minecraft 1.21.1 NeoForge. It adds a cooking system built around the Cooking Pot, Cutting Boards, Skillet and Stove, four new crops, soil upgrades, and a large set of foods, drinks and decorative blocks. In Fear Nightfall it is the main source of food variety and of the Nourishment effect, which stops hunger from draining while it is active.

The mod adds no mobs, dimensions or biomes of its own. Its world changes are limited to wild crop patches, village houses, villager trades and loot tables.

Overview

Farmer's Delight covers three areas. The first is food preparation: meals are cooked in a pot or a skillet, cut on a board, and served as blocks or eaten from a bowl or plate. The second is farming: tomatoes, cabbages, onions and rice grow from seeds, and wild versions of these crops spawn in suitable biomes. The third is building and decoration: cabinets, baskets, canvas signs, rope, tatami and straw bales give houses and farms a lived-in look.

Its effects on the rest of the pack are mostly about food. Nourishment lets a player go for several minutes without hunger drain, which matters during long nights in the pack's horror biomes. Most other changes are small additions to vanilla villagers, loot and structures.

Mechanics

Cooking

The Cooking Pot has nine slots: six for ingredients, one for the meal display, one for the container (a bowl, plate or similar) and one for the output. It needs a heat source underneath. Blocks in the heat_sources tag work when lit, and heat can pass through heat_conductors unless a recipe requires direct heat. A pot cannot cook while flooded. The finished dish is stored as a meal and served by right-clicking, and the serving container is shown in the tooltip. The screen has a recipe book tab, which is on by default in the config.

The Skillet is an iron-tier tool that is used by holding right-click. While it is in use, food held in the offhand cooks when the player stands near a heat source. Each hit with the skillet costs one durability. Pressing the attack key while it is in use flips the food, with a 12-tick flip animation. Sneaking while placing it puts it down as a block. Fire Aspect on the skillet shortens its cooking time.

Cutting boards

A cutting board accepts a food or log and a tool that matches the recipe. The tool actions are knife slicing, axe stripping and shears carving. Some results are chance-based, and the Fortune enchantment adds to the chance by 0.1 per level by default. A dispenser placed behind a cutting board can operate it with the items stored in the dispenser, which is on by default in the config. Salvaging recipes turn vanilla furniture, chest boats and minecarts into Farmer's Delight outputs.

Knives and combat

Knives are digger-type tools with a base attack speed of -2.0. Each hit costs one durability. A knife-wielding attacker receives 0.1 less knockback from its own hits. Knives cannot break blocks in creative mode. A knife carves pumpkins into carved pumpkins, and right-clicking a cake with a knife removes a bite and gives a cake slice. A whole cake lasts six bites.

The Backstabbing enchantment is only for knives. It has a maximum level of 3 and multiplies damage dealt from behind by 1.4 at level 1, with 0.2 added for each further level. While an attacker holds a knife, mobs can drop feathers, leather, rabbit hide, shulker shells, string, and ham or smoked ham from pigs and hoglins with Looting.

Stove

Right-clicking a Stove lights or extinguishes it. A lit stove deals 1 HP of damage to each entity that stands in the grilling area above it, using the stove burn damage type. That damage sets the entity on fire and adds 0.1 exhaustion. Sneaking avoids the damage. Lit stoves also report the fire path type to mobs.

Nourishment and food effects

The Comfort and Nourishment page covers the mod's two effects. Nourishment is beneficial. While it is active, exhaustion is reset to zero each tick, so the hunger bar does not drop, and the player can eat even when full. Its durations are:

Duration Meals
Brief (30 seconds) Cooked Rice
Short (1 minute) Bone Broth, Bacon and Eggs, Ratatouille
Medium (3 minutes) Most meals, and vanilla Mushroom Stew and Beetroot Soup
Long (5 minutes) Most meals, and vanilla Rabbit Stew

Comfort heals 1 HP every 80 ticks while the player is not saturated, but it is deprecated and no food applies it. Other food effects are small. Wheat Dough, Raw Pasta and Chicken Cuts can cause Hunger I for 30 seconds at a 30% chance. Fruit Salad gives Regeneration for 5 seconds, and Glow Berry Custard gives Glowing for 5 seconds. Cake slices give Speed I for 20 seconds, and pie slices give Speed I for 30 seconds. Apple Cider gives Absorption for one minute.

Dog food heals a tamed wolf to full health and gives Speed I, Strength I and Resistance I for 5 minutes. Horse feed attracts horses and is eaten by tamed mounts.

Farming and soil

Rice needs a water source below it. Rice panicles that reach their final stage give straw when harvested. Straw is also dropped from grass and tall grass (20% each), sandy shrubs (30%), and mature wheat, when harvested with a knife.

Organic Compost has eight stages. It gains progress on random ticks, faster in light, next to water, and next to compost activator blocks. Once finished it becomes Rich Soil. Rich Soil boosts the crop above or below it on random ticks, with a default chance of 0.2. Villagers treat Rich Soil Farmland as farmland.

Tomato vines can grow on rope blocks, and they climb rope blocks that carry the farmersdelight:ropes tag. A player can reel rope back up by sneaking with an empty hand. A tomato crop on a rope keeps the rope in place when it breaks.

Changes to vanilla

  • Villagers: Cabbage, tomato, onion, rice, the two seeds and rice panicles are added to the items that villagers want. The same crops give villagers food points, so breeding is affected.
  • Farmer trades: Novice farmers buy 26 onions and 26 tomatoes for one emerald each. Apprentice farmers buy 16 cabbages and 20 rice for one emerald each. These trades can be turned off in the config.
  • Wandering Trader: Sells cabbage seeds, tomato seeds, rice and onion for one emerald each.
  • Village farms: Wheat in the farm processor lists has a 30% chance of becoming a Farmer's Delight crop, and potatoes in snowy farms have a 20% chance of becoming cabbage or onion. Compost heap pieces are added to village house pools in plains, snowy, savanna, desert and taiga villages.
  • Loot: Farmer's Delight loot is added to 14 vanilla chest tables, including abandoned mineshafts, bastion treasure rooms, end city treasure, pillager outposts, ruined portals, shipwrecks, simple dungeons and village houses. Zombies and illagers can drop onions.
  • Vanilla soups: Mushroom Stew, Beetroot Soup and Rabbit Stew grant Nourishment when eaten. Soups stack to 16. Rabbit Stew has a buff with 14 nutrition, 0.75 saturation and Long Nourishment, and it leaves a bowl.
  • Pumpkin pie: Can be placed as a block on click. The config can require sneaking instead.
  • Logs: Stripping logs with an axe on a cutting board gives tree bark.
  • Rope and fences: Rope fences and rope fence gates do not connect to each other.
  • Canvas rug: Hides block-break cracks on the block.

In Fear Nightfall

  • Loot in structures: Farmer's Delight chest loot reaches the chests that the pack maps to vanilla chest tables. The pack's mapping lets the taverns and crypts of Dungeons and Taverns draw from village house and dungeon loot, so Farmer's Delight items appear in those structures too. See Loot and Chests.
  • Lootr: Lootr cannot make Cabinets per-player, so cabinet contents are shared between players and are first come, first served.
  • Wild crops: Wild crop patches spawn according to biome temperature and humidity. Wild carrots and onions grow in temperate biomes, wild potatoes in cold biomes, wild tomatoes in hot biomes that are not wet, and wild rice in wet biomes. Wild cabbage grows on beaches. The pack's biome changes affect where these patches appear. See Biomes.
  • Fish Chorba: The pack's fix for Fish Chorba gives it Comfort, an effect that Farmer's Delight has marked for removal.
