Loot and Chests

From the Fear Nightfall wiki · Fear Nightfall

Loot and Chests covers how the Fear Nightfall pack distributes items across the world. Most of the pack's loot sits in structure chests, barrels, shulker boxes and similar containers, and it comes from the structure mods, from the item mods that add loot to vanilla-style tables, and from the fishing and boss systems. The pack adds three layers on top of the mods' own tables: a chest mapping that routes modded loot into vanilla-style chests, the Lootr mod that gives each player their own copy of a container's contents, and a set of fixes that make sure rare items are obtainable.

Much of the pack's loot is found in its horror structures, which are dangerous at night and in the horror biomes. Because the pack is meant for multiplayer, loot is per player in most containers, so one player cannot empty a structure for the others.

Where loot comes from

Loot in the pack has four main sources:

  • Structure chests. The mods that add structures (Dungeons and Taverns, Better Dungeons, Better Mineshafts, strongholds, Explorify, Towns and Towers and others) place chests with their own loot tables. Each structure page lists its chest loot.
  • Fishing. The Tide fishing loop adds fish, fishing loot and Loot Crates. Crates are rolled once, when they are pulled from the water or lava.
  • Bosses and keys. Boss drops are the only source of some keys. The Vaults and Keys page describes the keys and the vaults they open.
  • Crafting, trading and breaking. Some items are crafted or bought from villagers. These are covered on the item pages, not here.

Mobs and their drops are covered on the Mobs page.

Chest mapping

The pack's largest loot change is a mapping of every structure-mod chest table to the vanilla chest it plays the role of. The pack has 387 such tables. A tavern chest is treated as a village house chest, a crypt chest as a dungeon chest, and a mage tower chest as a stronghold library chest. The original loot of each table is kept, and the modded additions are added on top.

The mapping lets loot from the item mods reach the chests of the structure mods. The following mods extend the chests this way:

Two mods, Supplementaries and Traveler's Backpack, only add loot when a table name matches the vanilla name exactly. Their chest additions are therefore mirrored with the same items and the same chances. This also made Traveler's Backpack loot reach the chests of YUNG's Better Structures, which the earlier fix had not done.

Some structure chests referenced loot tables that their mod never shipped. Sixteen of these chests generated empty, and the pack now gives them the loot of their mapped vanilla table.

Mods without loot modifiers keep their loot inside their own structures. These include Graveyards, Born in Chaos and Sleepy Hollows.

The pack checks the mapping by rolling every table 200 to 300 times. Of the 371 mapped tables, 368 receive every expected mod. The three misses are porkchop-swap modifiers on tables that contain no porkchops.

Per-player containers

The pack runs Lootr, which replaces most structure containers with per-player versions. Each player opening a container receives a separate set of items from the container's loot table, and taking items does not remove them for other players. Lootr applies to chests, trapped chests, barrels, shulker boxes, decorated pots, suspicious sand and gravel, mineshaft chest minecarts and some item frames. Its settings and the full list of blocks are on the Lootr page.

Some containers cannot be made per-player, so they stay shared and are emptied by the first player to reach them. These are:

Trims and rare items in replacement structures

YUNG's replacement temples, fortresses and strongholds have their own chests, and these chests do not hold the Armor Trims or the Blazing Fishing Rod that vanilla chests can hold. Without a fix these items were unobtainable in those structures. The pack adds trims at vanilla-like odds to these chests. It also extends the loot of Tide, Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks and Traveler's Backpack into them. The Fishing Rods page covers the Blazing Fishing Rod.

The pack checked this change by rolling the chests 200 times before and after the fix.

Boss keys and vaults

The Dead King and the Echo of Tyros drop the keys that open the Catacombs and the Citadel. Neither key appears in any chest table. Because these keys are boss drops, a vault's reward is only available after the matching boss has been defeated. The Vaults and Keys page gives the details.

Fishing crates

Loot Crates are fished up in the water, freshwater, saltwater, lava and End contexts of the Tide Fishing loop. The Wooden, Obsidian and Purpur crates each have their own depth and fluid conditions, and each uses its own loot table. The pack makes no changes to the crate contexts, weights or loot tables.

Supply caches

Supply Caches are small surface structures added by Explorify. Each one holds a single chest of food, torches, iron ingots, wool and leather. They are rare in the pack, because the pack's sparse-structure setting spaces them far apart.

Tips

  • Because Lootr containers are per player, every member of a group finds loot in the same structure, so a group does not need to split up to share it.
  • Trims and the Blazing Fishing Rod can be found in the replacement temples, fortresses and strongholds, at vanilla-like odds. Search several structures before deciding that an item is missing.
  • Each crate type is only eligible at its own depth and fluid, so fish the context that holds the crate you want. The Loot Crates page lists the contexts.
  • The Horror and Spooky Content page describes the threats that guard the structures that hold the most loot.
