The Loot Crates are three placeable containers added by Tide (the Wooden Crate, the Obsidian Crate and the Purpur Crate). Each crate is a 27-slot storage block that is filled with random loot when it is pulled from the water or lava by the fishing hook. Each crate type is tied to its own fishing contexts.
A crate is an ordinary item once it is in a player's inventory, so it can be placed, mined and stored like any other block. The contents of a crate are rolled once, at the moment the crate lands and is placed in the world, and are not rolled again when it is opened.
Obtaining
Crates are obtained in three ways:
- Fishing. Crates are one of the three catch groups in the fishing loop, alongside fish and fishing loot. Every crate context uses the base weight 4.0 (the server option
crateWeight), and the weight is multiplied by 5 while Magnetic Bait is applied to the rod. Each context's weight is then gated by its own conditions (see Where each crate is found below), so a crate is only eligible in the place it is designed for. Pulling a crate triggers the "pull crate" advancement. - Crafting. The Wooden Crate is crafted from eight wooden slabs in a ring. The Obsidian Crate and the Purpur Crate have no crafting recipe.
- Breaking. All three crates drop themselves as items when broken.

Usage
Opening
Right-clicking a placed crate opens its 27-slot inventory as a three-row chest screen. Opening and closing play the barrel open and close sounds, and the block's open state changes to match whether a player is viewing it. The crate's contents are stored in the block itself and remain there when the crate is closed or the world is reloaded.
Pulling
When the hook selects a crate, the block at the hook's position is replaced by the crate block and a loot crate entity is launched toward the player along a short arc. The entity falls under gravity and tries to land on the block below it:
- If the crate can be placed at the landing position, it is set back into the world as a block and its 27 slots are filled from the crate's loot table.
- If the landing position cannot take the block (the target block is not replaceable, or the block below is not solid), the crate is discarded. Its loot is spawned as item entities in the world and the crate item itself is dropped. This only happens while the
doEntityDropsgame rule is enabled.
Crate loot is rolled with the fishing loot context, so the rod's luck applies to it.
Where each crate is found
Each crate type has its own fishing contexts. Hook depth is the Y level of the hook, and "surface" means above Y 40.
- Wooden Crate
- Surface freshwater: open water, freshwater, overworld, above Y 40.
- Surface saltwater: open water, saltwater, overworld, above Y 40.
- Underground: water, overworld, between Y 0 and Y 40.
- Deep: water, overworld, below Y 0.
- Obsidian Crate
- Surface lava: lava, overworld, above Y 40.
- Underground lava: lava, overworld, between Y 0 and Y 40.
- Deep lava: lava, overworld, below Y 0.
- Nether: the Nether dimension, with no fluid condition.
- Purpur Crate
- End: the End dimension.
Each context uses its own loot table under chests/crates, so the same crate type gives different loot depending on where it was fished up. The loot tables are not summarized here.
If Hybrid Aquatic is installed, its crate types are added to the crate loot of the matching contexts.
Block properties
| Crate | Tool | Hardness | Blast resistance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wooden Crate | Axe | 2.5 | 2.5 |
| Obsidian Crate | Diamond-tier pickaxe (required) | 20 | 500 |
| Purpur Crate | Pickaxe (required) | 2 | 8 |
The Obsidian Crate is also in the needs_diamond_tool item tag. The Wooden Crate burns for 300 ticks as furnace fuel. The Obsidian and Purpur crates are not fuel.
Pack changes
Fear Nightfall makes no changes to the crate contexts, crate weights or crate loot tables. The weights above are the mod's defaults.
