Tide Fishing
Tide Fishing is the fishing system added by the Tide mod. It replaces the vanilla fishing loop with its own hook entity, bite timer, catch selection and optional reel minigame, and it adds about 102 fish that can be caught in water, lava and the void. Rods, bait, lines and hooks are crafted, but some rods come only from fishing loot, trades or drops, and some fish can be caught only by fishing. Fear Nightfall changes Tide's loot only in the chests of structures that the pack replaces (see the section on Fear Nightfall changes).
Each catch is chosen from a weighted pool of fish, fishing loot and loot crates. The pool depends on where the hook is, the time, the weather, the season, the biome and the equipment on the rod. The rod, hook, line, bobber and bait are combined in an Angling Table, and the fish themselves are described on the Freshwater Fish, Saltwater Fish, Underground Fish, Lava Fish and Void Fish pages.
Casting
Holding right-click charges a cast. The charge takes 25 ticks, and the holdToCast server option is on by default. Cast speed and luck come from the rod's perks and from the enchantments on the rod: Lure reduces the bite timer, and Luck of the Sea adds luck to the catch pool.
Rods have a fixed number of bait slots. All bait in the rod's slots applies at once, and the speed and luck values of the bait are summed. Two stacks of the same bait type cannot be installed on one rod. One bait is consumed from each slot for every catch.
Mediums and hooks
The hook fishes in one of three mediums. The medium decides which fish can be caught and how long the bite takes.
| Medium | Hook needed | Bite time multiplier | Where it works |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water | Any hook | 1.0 | Any water block |
| Lava | Lavaproof Hook | 1.6 | Lava blocks |
| Void | Void Hook | 1.8 | At or below the void surface |
The void surface is set in the server config. Its default is y -70 in the Overworld, y -6 in the Nether and y 50 in the End. A hook must be at or below that height to fish in the void, so void fishing happens under the normal world floor.
The other hooks change the conditions that the catch pool checks. The Fiery Hook raises the water temperature around the hook, the Permafrost Hook lowers it, and the Twilight Hook inverts the time-of-day preference. The temperature changes weight fish that prefer a particular temperature range.
Bite timer
After the hook lands, the bite time is calculated in this order:
- A random value from 200 to 600 ticks (10 to 30 seconds) is drawn.
- The value is multiplied by the medium's bite time multiplier. In water this gives 200 to 600 ticks, in lava 320 to 960 ticks (16 to 48 seconds) and in the void 360 to 1080 ticks (18 to 54 seconds).
- A lure term is subtracted. The term is
2000 / (1 + e^(-0.2 × lure)) - 1000, wherelureis the rod's lure speed. It is 0 with no lure, 99 ticks at lure 1, 291 ticks at lure 3 and 462 ticks at lure 5. - The result is multiplied by a server-wide bite time multiplier and floored at 10 ticks.
Before the bite, the hook shows bubbles that grow stronger as the bite gets closer. The bubbles are a timing cue and do not change the bite time.
Catch selection
A catch comes from one of three groups. Each entry in a group is weighted, and the weight is first tested against the entry's conditions and then scaled by its modifiers.
- Fishing loot. Junk and treasure from vanilla, plus Tide tables for surface, underground and lava junk and treasure, the desert well, ocean monuments, trial chambers and the Nether. The Sunflower Fishing Rod is a plains-biome entry in this group.
- Fish. Each fish has a selection weight. The fish data also lists the conditions that apply to it, such as season, dimension, depth, weather, moon phase, biome, nearby blocks, open water and fresh or salt water.
- Loot crates. Crates have a base weight of 4.0 (
crateWeight) and a quality of 1.0 (crateQuality). A magnetic bait multiplies the weight. See Loot Crates for the contents.
A fish or loot entry whose conditions are not met gets no weight, so it cannot be caught in that situation. Conditions include the time, depth, biome and hook.
Reel minigame
After a fish is caught, a reel minigame runs by default (doMinigame is on). The bar speed comes from the fish's speed value divided by 20, scaled by the server's minigame difficulty multiplier, which defaults to 1.0. The result is shown as "Perfect Catch!", "Good" or "Miss". Installing Starcatcher or Stardew Fishing replaces the built-in minigame with theirs.
Lines change the minigame:
| Line | Effect |
|---|---|
| Fishing Line | Base line, no change |
| Copper Line | Fish speed x0.9 |
| Iron Line | Catch strength x0.86 |
| Golden Line | Speed x0.95, +1 luck |
| Diamond Line | Catch strength x0.75 |
Rods
Tide adds 13 rods, and the vanilla fishing rod is replaced by a Tide rod by default (overrideVanillaRod). Each rod has a number of bait slots and a base durability. The durability is multiplied by the server's rod durability multiplier.
| Rod | Bait slots | Base durability |
|---|---|---|
| Stone | 1 | 48 |
| Iron | 1 | 64 |
| Golden | 2 | 36 |
| Crystal | 2 | 80 |
| Diamond | 2 | 128 |
| Netherite | 2 | 512 |
| Echo | 3 | 256 |
| Prismarine | 3 | 256 |
| Midas | 3 | 256 |
| Village | 4 | 256 |
| Blazing | 4 | 256 |
| Honeycomb | 5 | 256 |
| Sunflower | 6 | 256 |
Breaking a rod returns its installed accessories to the player. The Prismarine Fishing Rod gains +1 speed and +1 luck while it rains. The Honeycomb Fishing Rod can drop from beehive honeycomb at a 5% chance.
Fish sizes
Every fish has a length drawn from a log-normal distribution fitted to its typical low and high sizes. The length is stored on the fish entity, and it is copied to the bucket or item when the fish is collected. Each fish also has a record size. The fish data groups the fish by medium: 22 freshwater, 23 saltwater, 20 underground, 11 lava and 26 void.
Spawns and fish that cannot spawn
Of the 102 fish, 74 spawn naturally in biomes. Most spawn in river biomes (20 fish), overworld biomes (14), ocean biomes (13), End biomes (12) and Nether biomes (11). Fish spawns share the water ambient mob cap, not the water creature cap.
The other 28 fish have no biome spawn and can only be caught with a hook. Examples are the Coelacanth, the Midas Fish, the Pentapus, the Pluto Snail and the Voidseeker. The Witherfin, a lava fish, applies Wither I for 5 seconds when it hits a player.
Vanilla fish and fishing
Tide changes several vanilla fishing and fish features:
- Cod, salmon, tropical fish and pufferfish become Tide fish in the fishing pool. Salmon are caught only in summer, fall and winter, in fresh water, in the Overworld at y 40 and above. Cod, tropical fish and pufferfish are caught only in salt water, in the Overworld at y 40 and above.
- The vanilla
husbandry/fishy_businessadvancement counts Tide fish too. - The Fisherman villager's Master trade offers a Village Fishing Rod for 15 emeralds.
- Vanilla fish loot drops from cod, salmon, tropical fish and pufferfish carry the length of the fish.
- Any item in the vanilla fishing table that Tide does not know is given default fish data, so other mods that add to that table are included.
Fishing Journal and Fishy Notes
The Fishing Journal and Fishy Notes page covers the journal. Each player is given one journal on first join. The journal records each catch and tracks completion, with advancements at halfway and at full completion. A fishy note crafted from a fish gives a hint about where the fish can be found and unlocks it in the journal. A note can be rerolled up to 2 times.
The Fish Satchel stores up to 64 stacks of fish. While it is open in the inventory, matching fish are collected into it automatically.
Fear Nightfall changes
- The Blazing Fishing Rod is not in the replacement chests of YUNG's temples, fortresses and strongholds. Loot from Tide was added to those chests, and the Blazing Fishing Rod was left out of them.
- The Enchanted Pocket Watch does not freeze bosses. The Lich, Dead King, Fire Boss, Headless Horseman, Lord Pumpkinhead and every boss in the
#c:bossestag are immune.
Tips
- A Lure enchantment on the rod is the most effective way to shorten bites. Lure 3 saves about 291 ticks off each wait.
- Lava and void fish have longer bite times, so a Lavaproof or Void Hook is worth bringing on long trips.
- Some fish have time, weather or temperature conditions. The journal lists the conditions a fish has been caught under.
- Loot crates from fishing can be opened for loot. Obsidian crates need a diamond-tier pickaxe to break.
