Fishing Journal and Fishy Note are two utility items added by Tide. The Fishing Journal is a book-style item that records every fish a player catches and tracks which fish have been unlocked. The Fishy Note is a paper item that reveals where one fish lives and unlocks that fish in the journal. Together they form the pack's fish-progression record, and the Fishing Journal is the item that a new player receives on joining the world.
Obtaining
The Fishing Journal is handed to each player once on first join when the server option giveJournal is enabled, which is the default. The flag is stored in the player's persistent data, so the item is given only once per player. Players who do not receive it can craft one (see below).
Fishy Notes are not found naturally. They are crafted from a fish, and they also appear as loot in Tide's fishing crates, which are placed in the world and in structure chests.
Crafting
The Fishing Journal is made from a raw cod, or any of its 105 accepted alternatives, together with a book. The recipe grid is shown below.
The Fishy Note uses a custom recipe type, tide:fishy_note_recipe. It takes a single fish as its input and produces a note that is bound to that fish. The note is therefore a record of the specific fish that was used, and reading it reveals that fish. See the table below for the crafting grid.
Loot and drops
Fishy Notes generate in Tide's crate loot tables. Each crate type rolls the note with a chance between roughly 83% and 86% per chest, and each successful roll yields exactly one note. The crate tables are split by the environment they are found in: surface freshwater, surface saltwater, surface lava, underground, underground lava, deep, deep lava, and nether. The per-chest chance for each table is listed below.
Notes from crates are generated without a fish assigned, so the fish is chosen the first time a player reads the note (see Fishy Notes under Usage).
| Item | Chest loot table | Structures | Chance per chest | Avg. stack |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Fishy Note | tide:chests/crates/surface_freshwater | 86.3% | 1.0 | |
Fishy Note | tide:chests/crates/underground | 85.7% | 1.0 | |
Fishy Note | tide:chests/crates/surface_saltwater | 85.7% | 1.0 | |
Fishy Note | tide:chests/crates/nether | 85.7% | 1.0 | |
Fishy Note | tide:chests/crates/deep | 84.0% | 1.0 | |
Fishy Note | tide:chests/crates/deep_lava | 83.7% | 1.0 | |
Fishy Note | tide:chests/crates/surface_lava | 82.7% | 1.0 | |
Fishy Note | tide:chests/crates/underground_lava | 82.7% | 1.0 | |
Fishy Note | tide:chests/crates/end | 81.7% | 1.0 |
Usage
Fishing Journal
Using the Fishing Journal opens Tide's journal screen. The journal records each catch with its timestamp, the biggest catch of each fish, and the habitat and profile information for that fish. It also shows the unlock state of every fish in the pack, and it flags entries that have not yet been read as unread (the showUnread client option is on by default).
Two advancements are tied to the journal. One is awarded when the journal reaches halfway completion, and the other when it is fully completed. The halfway advancement is journal_halfway_completed.
A lectern holding a Fishing Journal opens the same journal screen on the server, instead of the vanilla book screen. Opening it this way also grants the lectern interaction statistic. Other mods that replace the lectern screen will conflict with this behaviour.
Server operators can manage journal state with the /journal command, which requires permission level 2. The subcommands are reset, lock, unlock all, and unlock <fish>.
Fishy Notes
Using a Fishy Note reveals a hint about where that fish lives and unlocks that fish in the Fishing Journal. The note's GUI shows the fish's silhouette, which is how the hint is presented.
When a note is generated in a crate, it has no fish assigned. The fish is chosen the first time the note is used. The game picks a random fish that the player has not yet unlocked and does not already hold a note for. It makes up to 2 rerolls (MAX_REROLLS = 2) to find one. If all attempts produce a fish the player already has, the last random fish is used anyway. A note crafted from a fish is bound to that fish from the start and is not rerolled.
Fishy Notes are valid fuel in a furnace. Each one burns for 200 ticks, which is 10 seconds.
Interactions with the pack
Fear Nightfall's loot pass extends Tide's loot to the chests that the pack maps to vanilla chest roles. Tide's entries are added on top of the original loot of those chests, so Fishy Notes can be found in mapped structure chests as well as in Tide's own crates.
Tide also modifies the vanilla advancement husbandry/fishy_business so that its criterion counts Tide's fish as well. A player who catches a Tide fish therefore progresses the vanilla advancement too.

Both items are listed in the generated table below. The Fishing Journal stacks to 64, and the Fishy Note does not stack.
