Species26

Void Fish are a family of 26 aquatic mobs added by Tide that live in the void, the region below a configurable height in each dimension. They belong to the water ambient mob category. None of them attacks players. Void fishing requires a rod with the Void Hook, and each species can be kept as a living mob with its bucket. Most void fish have no natural spawn, and the largest, such as the Dragon Fish with 60 health, can only be obtained through fishing or special rules.

Natural spawns are limited to the eight End biomes: End Barrens, End Corruption, End Highlands, End Midlands, End Reef, End Wilds, Small End Islands and The End. Only 12 of the 26 void fish have natural spawn entries. The other 14 appear only through fishing, bucket placement or special sources, such as the Dragon Fish, Pentapus, Shadow Shark and Darkness Eater.

A natural void fish spawn requires an air block at or below the void surface of its dimension. With the pack's default configuration (see Void Fish), that surface is at y=50 in the End. In the Overworld and the Nether it lies below the build limit of those dimensions, so void fish do not spawn naturally there.

The End spawn entries use weights from 1 to 10. The highest weight (10) belongs to the Pale Clubfish, Enderfin and Amber Rockfish, each in groups of 3 to 5. Mantyvern and Snatcher Squid have the lowest weight (1), each in a group of 1.

Void height

The void surface for each dimension is set in the Tide server config (fishableVoidHeights). The defaults are:

Dimension Type Height Resulting surface
Overworld Relative to bottom -6 y=-70, below the build limit
Nether Relative to bottom -6 y=-6, below the build limit
The End Relative to bottom 50 y=50

The pack keeps these defaults. The config entry is marked as requiring a server restart to change.

Behavior

Void fish are built on Tide's fish base class, with a custom move control and a navigation that stays in water and void. The base void fish class has three goals:

Priority Goal Effect
0 Panic (speed 1.25) Flee when hurt.
4 Void swim (speed 1.0) Wander to random positions in the void or in water.
5 Follow flock leader Schooling with other fish of the same kind.

The Smooth Swimming variants (Dragon Fish, Shadow Shark, Darkness Eater, Mantyvern and Snatcher Squid) use a smoother move control and turning model. They keep the panic and wander goals but drop the flock goal, so they swim alone. Pentapus registers its own random-drift goal, which sets small random velocities and stops after more than 100 ticks without movement.

Inside the void, a void fish counts as being in water, so it uses water movement and its fall distance is reset each tick. None of the void fish classes has an attack goal, so they never target a player.

Each void fish drops its own fish item. The drop is the cooked version when the fish is killed while on fire, and the raw version otherwise. A caught void fish arrives as its fish item. Bucket the fish if you want to keep the living mob.

The 26 void fish are grouped below by size and health. The health values are the base values from the mob definitions.

Large fish

  • Dragon Fish: 60 health (30 hearts) and 4 by 1 blocks, the largest void fish.
  • Shadow Shark: 28 health (14 hearts) and 1.8 by 0.6 blocks.
  • Darkness Eater: 25 health (12.5 hearts) and 1.7 by 0.65 blocks.
  • Mantyvern: 20 health (10 hearts) and 1.8 by 0.5 blocks. It has natural End spawns with weight 1.
  • Snatcher Squid: 16 health (8 hearts) and 1 by 0.2 blocks. It has natural End spawns with weight 1.

Medium fish

Fish with 5 to 8 health, including Voidseeker, Deep Blue, Vengeance, Nephrosilu, Sleepy Carp, Chorus Cod, Violet Carp, Amber Rockfish, Ender Glider, Judgment Fish and Bedrock Bug.

Small fish

Fish with 1 to 4 health. Pentapus, Pale Clubfish, Blue Neonfish and Red 40 have 4 or fewer. The Endergazer, Enderfin, Alpha Fish and Elytrout have 3 health each, and Flying Dutchman's Sock and Incandescent Larva have 1 health each.

Each void fish has a spawn egg and a bucket. The bucket keeps the fish's caught length in its item data. The Void Hook is required for void fishing; it is one of the hooks in Fishing Gadgets. The cooked fish items are standard food. Fish caught in the void are tracked by the Fishing Journal and Fishy Notes.

Tips

  • To catch a void fish, use a rod with the Void Hook and keep the hook below the void surface. Without the hook, the rod cannot fish in the void.
  • The void bite timer is 1.8 times the open-water timer, so expect longer waits than in water or lava.
  • Void fish do not attack, so there is no combat strategy. Use a bucket to keep a fish you want, and keep the bucket spawn egg for later placement.
  • For the other Tide fish families, see Freshwater Fish, Saltwater Fish, Lava Fish and Underground Fish.
  • For the fishing process itself, see Tide Fishing.
