Tide is a fishing overhaul added by the Tide mod (version 2.1.1 in Fear Nightfall). It replaces the vanilla fishing loop with its own hook entity, bite timer and catch selection, and adds about 102 fish, including fish that live in lava, underground and in the void. It also adds rods, hooks, lines, bobbers, bait, a fishing journal, loot crates and a set of utility and informational items. Fishing with Tide is the main way to obtain its fish, its rod upgrades and its cooked food.
Overview
Tide is a large content mod with a moderate footprint on the base game. It requires NeoForge 21 or later, Minecraft 1.21.1 and Cloth Config. It does not add dimensions, biomes, structures, ores, trees, enchantments, mob effects, potions or damage types. Its additions are fish, fishing equipment, crates, a journal, and a small set of utility and information items.
The mod supports several optional fishing and season mods. When Starcatcher or Stardew Fishing is installed, their catch minigames replace Tide's own. When Serene Seasons or Ecliptic Seasons is installed, fish conditions can check the season. Fish data for Fishing Real, Hybrid Aquatic, Fish of Thieves and Nether Depths Upgrade is also shipped in the jar.
Content
Fish
Tide adds about 102 fish, each with a fish item, a bucket item where the fish can be bucketed, and a spawn egg. All fish use the water ambient mob category, so they share that spawn cap and not the water creature cap. The fish are grouped by habitat in the data folder: 22 freshwater, 23 saltwater, 11 lava, 20 underground and 26 void fish. The groups are covered on their own pages: Freshwater Fish, Saltwater Fish, Lava Fish, Underground Fish and Void Fish.
Fish spawn naturally in 74 of the 102 cases. Most biome spawns are added to the vanilla river, overworld and ocean biome tags. Fish also spawn in the Nether and the End. Notable Nether spawns include Blazing Swordfish, Ember Koi, Magma Mackerel, Ash Perch, Volcano Tuna, Obsidian Pike, Witherfin, Soulscale, Warped and Inferno Guppy, and Crimson Fangjaw. Notable End spawns include Dutchman Sock, Enderfin, Amber Rockfish, Pale Clubfish, Endergazer, Ender Glider, Mantyvern and Snatcher Squid. Twenty-eight fish have no biome spawn and are obtained through fishing or special sources.
Each fish's length is drawn from a log-normal distribution fitted to its typical size range, and is capped by its record size. The length is stored on the caught fish and on its bucket. Several fish have special behaviour. Witherfin applies Wither I for 5 seconds with a 1-damage hit on a player. Blazing Swordfish sets its target on fire for 80 ticks. Pluto Snail moves much faster in water. Fish cooked into food are listed in Tide Fish Food.
Rods
Tide adds 13 rods, and its vanilla replacement rod takes the place of the vanilla Fishing Rod by default. Each rod has a different number of bait slots: Stone 1, Iron 1, Golden 2, Crystal 2, Diamond 2, Netherite 2, Echo 3, Prismarine 3, Midas 3, Village 4, Blazing 4, Honeycomb 5 and Sunflower 6. The Stone, Iron, Golden, Crystal, Diamond, Netherite and Midas rods are made with smithing recipes and upgrades. Base durability is 48 for Stone, 64 for Iron, 36 for Golden, 80 for Crystal, 128 for Diamond, 512 for Netherite and 256 for the other rods.
Some rods come from loot or trades. The Echo Fishing Rod has a 10% chance in ancient city chests, the Blazing Fishing Rod has a 20% chance in nether bridge chests, and the Prismarine Fishing Rod has a 40% chance as a drop from elder guardians. The Village Fishing Rod is sold by the Fisherman villager for 15 emeralds at the master trade level. The Honeycomb (Beeline) rod has a 5% chance to drop alongside a beehive's honeycomb. Rods are upgraded and fitted with accessories at the Angling Table.
Fishing accessories
Accessories are fitted into a rod's slots at the Angling Table. Tide adds six hooks (Fishing, Fiery, Permafrost, Twilight, Lavaproof and Void), five lines (Fishing, Copper, Iron, Golden and Diamond), 33 bobbers and five bait items (Bait, Lucky Bait, Magnetic Bait, Incandescent Bait and Abyss Bait). The hooks, lines and bait are covered in Fishing Gadgets. Bobbers are cosmetic and have no effect on fishing.
Utility and information items
- The Fishing Journal and Fishy Notes records catches, and a Fishy Note reveals where a fish lives.
- The Fish Satchel is a bundle-style container that holds 64 stacks of fish.
- The Starlight Bow turns arrows into Star Arrows.
- The Dragonfin Boots give one extra jump in mid-air.
- The Voidseeker teleports the player to their respawn point when eaten.
- The Chasm Eel breaks bedrock when used on it.
- The Jelly Torch is a torch that can be placed underwater.
- The Pocket Watch and Enchanted Pocket Watch display time and freeze mobs.
- The Climate Gauge, Depth Meter, Weather Radio, Lunar Calendar and Fish Finder are informational items. They draw overlays when held or equipped in a curio or trinket slot.
Crates and their materials are covered in Loot Crates and Tide Materials.
Mechanics
Casting and bites
A cast is charged by holding right-click for 25 ticks. Time until a bite is random between 200 and 600 ticks, multiplied by a medium factor: 1.0 in water, 1.6 in lava and 1.8 in the void. The Lure enchantment and bait reduce the wait, with a minimum of 10 ticks. Lure-attraction bubbles appear before a bite and grow stronger as the bite approaches. The general process is described in Tide Fishing.
Catch selection
Each cast is a weighted random pick from three groups: Tide's fishing loot tables (junk and treasure, plus structure and biome tables), fish entries from the fish data, and crate entries. Each entry's weight is first gated by its conditions, such as season, dimension, depth, weather, time of day, moon phase, luck, enchantment, biome, structure, open water, nearby block, fluid and fresh or salt water. The weight is then scaled by a temperature modifier that peaks at a preferred temperature. Crate entries use a default weight of 4.0 (the crateWeight setting).
Hooks and fishing mediums
The Lavaproof Hook is required to fish in lava. The Void Hook is required to fish in the void, and only above the void surface. The default void surface is the bottom of the world minus 6 in the Overworld and Nether, and the bottom plus 50 in the End. The Fiery Hook raises the water temperature, the Permafrost Hook lowers it, and the Twilight Hook inverts time preferences.
Lines and bait
Copper line reduces fish speed by 10%, Iron line reduces catch difficulty by 15%, Golden line reduces speed by 5% and adds 1 luck, and Diamond line reduces catch difficulty by 25%. Each rod's bait slots are applied together, with speed and luck summed. Two stacks of the same bait type cannot share a rod. One bait is consumed from each slot per catch. Breaking a rod returns its accessories to the player.
Reel minigame
After a fish is caught, a reel minigame runs. The bar speed comes from the fish's speed value, scaled by the difficulty multiplier (default 1.0). Results are labelled "Perfect Catch!", "Good" or "Miss". Water, lava and void fish each have their own bar visual.
Crates
Wooden, Obsidian and Purpur crates are placeable blocks. An Obsidian Crate requires a diamond-tier pickaxe to mine. Opening a crate rolls loot from a table chosen by its context, such as surface freshwater, surface saltwater, surface lava, underground, underground lava, deep, deep lava, nether or end.
Fishing Journal
Each player receives one Fishing Journal when they first join the world, if the giveJournal setting is on. The journal records each catch with its timestamp, habitat and size, and it tracks which fish have been unlocked. Lecterns holding a journal open the journal screen. The /journal command is used to reset, lock or unlock fish, and /fishing test prints the weighted results of a loot, crate or fish roll.
Pocket Watch
The Enchanted Pocket Watch freezes a mob when used on it. A frozen mob stops ticking and its render partial tick is zero. Mobs in the ignores_pocket_watch tag and mobs on the pocketWatchBlacklist setting are immune.
Dragonfin Boots
While worn in the feet slot, the Dragonfin Boots give one extra jump in mid-air, restored on landing. The boots do nothing in creative mode, while flying or while fall-flying.
Changes to vanilla
- The vanilla Fishing Rod is replaced by a Tide rod with one bait slot and 32 durability. The
overrideVanillaRodsetting controls this and needs a restart. - Vanilla cod, salmon, tropical fish and pufferfish become Tide fish. Salmon appear only in summer, fall and winter in freshwater. Cod, tropical fish and pufferfish appear in saltwater. All four appear only in the overworld above Y 40.
- Fish drops from vanilla fish carry their length.
- Vanilla fishing junk and treasure tables are used as entries in Tide's catch selection.
- Any item added to the vanilla fish loot table is given automatically generated fish data, unless it is on the
autoFishDataBlacklist. - The vanilla advancement "Fishy Business" counts Tide fish as well as vanilla fish.
- The vanilla Fisherman gains the Village Fishing Rod trade.
- Fish spawn entries are added to vanilla biome tags. No vanilla spawn entries are removed.
- Furnace fuel values are added for the Wooden Crate, Angling Table and Fish Display (300 ticks each).
- Right-clicking a bucket onto a stack of living Tide fish fills the bucket with that fish.
- Frozen mobs skip their normal tick. Only the tick counter, hurt time and invulnerability time decrease.
- A Fishing Journal in a lectern opens Tide's journal screen instead of the book screen.
In Fear Nightfall
- Tide loot is added to the mapped structure chests of the pack, including the replacement temples, fortresses and strongholds from YUNG's mods. The Blazing Fishing Rod, which Tide places in nether bridge chests, is unobtainable from these replacement chests.
- The Enchanted Pocket Watch cannot freeze bosses in the pack. Lich, Dead King, Headless Horseman, Lord Pumpkinhead and every mob in the
#c:bossestag are immune. See Bosses. - Fish spawn in the Nether and the End as well as the Overworld. Witherfin inflicts Wither I on a player it hits, and Blazing Swordfish sets its target on fire.
