Lava Fish are eleven fish added by the Tide mod that live in lava rather than water. They spawn naturally in Nether biomes and are caught with a rod fitted with a Lavaproof Hook. Unlike the water fish covered by Freshwater Fish, Saltwater Fish, Underground Fish and Void Fish, they are immune to fire and cannot survive in water. Most of them school together, and the species differ mainly in health, speed and spawn weight. The group includes one lava fish that works as a weapon, the Blazing Swordfish.
Spawning
Lava fish spawn naturally in 16 biomes, all of them Nether biomes. They only spawn and move in lava. The Ember Koi, Magma Mackerel and Ash Perch have the highest spawn weight in the group, and the Blazing Swordfish has the lowest. Each species' group size is listed in the spawn table below. Other mods that add Nether mobs share the same spawn space.

Fishing in lava
Lava fish are usually caught with fishing rods rather than found by walking up to them. Lava fishing requires a Lavaproof Hook, and the rod must also be lavaproof. Bites take longer in lava: the bite timer is multiplied by 1.6, against 1.0 in water. The reel minigame uses a lava visual. Catching a lava fish is one of Tide's fishing advancements, and the Tide fish conditions gate the rarer lava and Nether species behind the catch selection.
Behavior
Schooling
Every lava fish except the Blazing Swordfish is a schooling fish. When a fish of the same species is nearby, one fish becomes the leader and the others follow it. Followers try to stay within 11 blocks of their leader and do not swim at random. A school grows up to the species' group size. A leader that finds no other fish of its species within 8 blocks drops back to a school of one, which is checked about once every 200 ticks.
Movement
Lava fish swim through lava with a slight downward drift. When a lava fish is on solid ground, it hops into the air and tries to return to the lava. The Blazing Swordfish is the fastest species, with a speed of 1.3 against 1 to 1.1 for the rest, and it uses its own turning controller.
Survival outside lava
Lava fish cannot live outside lava.
- In lava: They are immune to fire and take no fire damage. They give no experience when killed in lava.
- In water: They take 4 freeze damage on every tick they are in water. This kills the 1-health Inferno and Warped Guppies almost at once.
- In air or on land: Their air supply runs down from 300 ticks. After it runs out, they take 2 drowning damage every 20 ticks.
Fleeing
When a lava fish is hurt, it panics and runs at 1.25 times its normal speed.
Despawning
Wild lava fish despawn when no player is near, unless they have a custom name or came from a bucket. Bucketed fish do not despawn.
Blazing Swordfish
The Blazing Swordfish is a solitary fish with 15 health, the highest in the group. Each attack sets its target on fire for 80 ticks. It is described further under Variants below.
Drops
Each lava fish drops its own fish item. If the fish is on fire when a player kills it, the drop is the cooked form. Lava fish items are fire resistant, so they survive being dropped into lava or fire.
Magma Mackerel and Ash Perch also appear as loot in Nether crate chests in structures. The Magma Mackerel is found in 77.7% of those chests, and the Ash Perch in 80.3%.

A sturdy schooling fish with 14 health, more than any other schooling species in the group. Its spawn group is 2 to 4.
Witherfin
A schooling fish with 6 health. Its attack applies Wither I for 5 seconds with a 1-damage hit on a player. Eating it grants Wither IV for 7 seconds, and it grants no fire resistance.
Inferno Guppy
The smallest schooling fish in the group, with 1 health (half a heart). Its food restores only 1 hunger and grants Fire Resistance I for 5 seconds. It is also a furnace fuel with a 3200-tick burn time, the longest in the group.
Warped Guppy
Has the same size, health, spawn weight and food as the Inferno Guppy.
Blazing Swordfish
A solitary lava fish and the only one that works as a weapon. It has 15 health, a speed of 1.3, and a spawn weight of 2 with a group size of 1, so it is the rarest lava fish to find. As an item it is a sword with 7 attack damage, an attack speed of 1.2 and 250 durability. It is in the vanilla swords tag and takes weapon enchantments. Each attack sets its target on fire for 80 ticks. Its food restores 6 hunger and grants Fire Resistance I for 30 seconds.

Tips
- Bring a lavaproof rod and a Lavaproof Hook before going out for lava fish. Without them, lava fishing is not possible.
- Keep lava fish out of water. A single dip in water is enough to kill a guppy.
- Most lava fish food grants Fire Resistance I for 10 seconds. The Blazing Swordfish gives the longest, at 30 seconds.
- Each Blazing Swordfish attack sets its target on fire, so use it on targets you are ready to burn.
