Redstone Caves is an underground biome added by Regions Unexplored. It generates only in the cave layer, never on the surface, and its floors, ceilings and pools are dotted with redstone formations. Players care about it for the redstone material it offers without leaving the underground, and for its mix of hostile mobs, which combines the vanilla cave monsters with several horror creatures from other mods in the pack.

Description

The biome is an ordinary cave environment in terms of terrain: the stone, the vanilla ore set and the cave carvers are the same as in other caves. What sets it apart is the redstone growth on the walls and floors and the small underground pools that hold a wide range of fish.

The grass and foliage colour is a pale yellow-green (#A3C563), the water is blue (#3F76E4), and the fog and sky colours are pale blue (#C0D8FF and #79A6FF). Its ambient sound is the vanilla cave ambience, and its music is the vanilla dripstone cave track. Where a cave has open floor, the biome places the vanilla plains vegetation: tall grass, flowers, pumpkins, sugar cane and brown and red mushrooms. Glow lichen also appears on cave walls.

Generation

Redstone Caves has a surface share of 0% of land, so it is found only underground. The mod's sampling puts it at about 0.38% of the cave layer at Y=-30. It is a special biome: instead of the usual weighted replacement of vanilla biomes, the mod places it in a band of cave space defined by erosion and temperature values. Its climate is a temperature of 0.8 and a downfall of 0.7, with rain.

Cave carvers used by the biome are the vanilla cave, extra underground cave and canyon carvers. The biome carries the vanilla tag that biases stronghold placement, so strongholds are more likely to generate beneath it.

Fear Nightfall does not weight Redstone Caves for horror. It is not one of the biomes that the pack gives 6× weight, and it is not one of the cave biomes that spread into neighbouring cave areas. The pack's horror emphasis in caves therefore comes from Spider Nest, Infested Caves and the other horror cave biomes rather than from this biome. Redstone Caves appears at the mod's default placement rate.

Features

Redstone formations

  • Pointed redstone forms hanging and standing spikes that act as a redstone conductor, so a signal can run along a row of them. Clusters and larger variants also generate.
  • Redstone bud is a decorative block that can be replaced by other blocks.
  • Redstone bulb emits light at level 12 and does not conduct redstone. It smelts or blasts into redstone dust.
  • Raw redstone block is placed by the surface rules in patches on the top layer of cave floors. It smelts or blasts into redstone and counts as a redstone source in the vanilla redstone ore item tag.

The blocks and their item forms are described on Redstone Caves Blocks.

Ores and terrain

Redstone Caves uses the vanilla underground ore set: coal, iron, copper, gold, lapis lazuli and diamond, along with the vanilla granite, diorite, andesite, tuff, dirt and gravel veins. The biome adds large redstone ore veins that generate up to Y=112, in addition to the standard redstone ores.

Other terrain features include the vanilla underground and surface lava lakes, lava springs, amethyst geodes, underground magma, and the vanilla dungeon rooms (Dungeon). Sand, clay and gravel disks appear in the cave floors and pools.

Water life

The underground pools hold Glow Squid and a broad set of ambient fish, which vary in weight from common species to rare ones. Corpse Fish and Glutton Fish are also present as water creatures. The full list is in the generated spawn table below.

Mobs and structures

The hostile spawn list is led by the vanilla cave monsters: spiders, skeletons, creepers and slimes at weight 100, and zombies at 95. Each has a group size of up to four. Horror mobs from other mods make up most of the rest of the list, with Slime Golem (weight 25) and Necromancer (weight 18) among the more common ones, and Dread Hound (weight 7) and Nightmare Stalker (weight 2) among the rarer. Krampus appears at weight 1.

Coal Golem is an ambient spawn in the biome, with bats. Because the caves are dark, hostile mobs spawn here at any time of day.

The biome has 90 structures that can generate in it. They come from several mods, including vanilla mineshafts and ruined portals, crypts from Graveyard, and firewells from Born in Chaos. The complete list and placement rules are in the generated structure table below.

Tips

  • Carry light. The caves are dark, so hostile mobs can spawn around you at any time.
  • Pointed redstone conducts power, so a line of it can carry a signal through a cave without wire. Plan routes that avoid the spikes if you need to walk through them.
  • Redstone bulbs give light level 12, which is bright enough to use as a lamp while you explore.
  • Expect Necromancers and Slime Golems among the common spawns, and check the spawn table before entering a cave with a particular weapon or plan.
