Inferno is an underground cave biome added by Regions Unexplored. It is one of the mod's special biomes: it is placed by a forced rule deep underground rather than by weighted replacement of vanilla biomes, so it is not chosen by climate weight like the mod's surface biomes. Its warm, dry, lava-filled caves and its large monster population, led by the Ashen, make it one of the more hostile underground biomes in Fear Nightfall.

Description

Inferno is a cave biome with a temperature of 2.0 and a downfall of 0. It has no precipitation, so it never rains or snows inside it. The fog is pale blue (#c0d8ff) and the water colour is #3f76e4. Grass and foliage are tinted a dull brown-grey (grass #7c7260, foliage #776f66), which keeps surface plants muted. The ambient mood uses the vanilla cave sounds and the dripstone caves music, and occasional white ash particles drift through the air.

The biome uses the vanilla cave carvers (cave, extra underground cave and canyon), so its passages look like ordinary overworld caves. Its ground is the usual stone, deepslate and dirt of the cave layer, with the ash vents and lava features described below layered on top.

Generation

Inferno is placed at a depth of 0.2 or greater, with a density-function weight that controls how far the biome extends. The biome carries the cave tags, so it counts as underground and as a cave for other mods and for the pack's spawn rules. Its share of the land is shown in the infobox.

The pack's biome distribution table does not include Inferno, so its coverage is set by its own forced placement rule rather than by a weight that the pack tunes. The pack's horror weighting, which raises the weight of selected biomes six times, does not list Inferno. Its danger comes from its monster spawn table, not from the pack's weighting changes.

Features

Inferno has lava in several forms. Underground and surface lava lakes are generated, and two mod features add lava falls and lava deltas. Ash vents are placed as patches across the floor.

Its ore set follows the vanilla overworld cave ores, including coal, copper, iron, gold, redstone, lapis lazuli and diamond, with buried and large diamond veins. Born in Chaos adds infected diamond ore and infected deepslate diamond ore features to the biome.

Trees, grass, flowers, sugar cane and pumpkin patches from the plains feature list are also placed in the biome. Supplementaries adds cave urns, road signs and wild flax.

Inferno has no spring water. The pack removes the vanilla spring-water feature from the biome, and the noise-router change turns off aquifer water in the area where the biome's density weight is active. Underground pools and springs therefore do not appear inside Inferno, so players must carry their own water.

Mobs and structures

The biome's monster table is led by the Ashen, which has a spawn weight of 100 and spawns in groups of four. The Ashen shares the top weight of 100 with the spider, skeleton, creeper and slime, and is ahead of the zombie. The Ashen is a zombie-style mob that is immune to fire, does not convert in water, and is not burned by sunlight.

Several other Born in Chaos and Regions Unexplored monsters also spawn here, including the Necromancer, Dread Hound and Spirit of Chaos. Ambient spawns are coal golems and bats. Underground water holds glow squids, and the water-ambient table lists the mod's cave fish.

Inferno contains 84 structures that can generate in it. The list includes ruined portals, ruined beacons, small wells, campsites, houses and towers, with spawns and loot shown in the tables below.

Tips

Ashen spawns in groups of four, so fight in a narrow passage where only one or two can reach you. Fire does not harm the Ashen, so torches and burning will not drive it off.

Carry water and food into Inferno, since the biome has no springs. Watch the lava lakes, lava falls and lava deltas before moving through a passage, and light the caves well because most monsters here spawn in the dark.
