The Joshua Desert is a hot, dry overworld biome added by Regions Unexplored. It is a desert variant with sparse vegetation and tall branching trees made of the Joshua wood set. It also spawns a large share of the horror mobs added by the pack's other mods, so it is a dangerous place to travel at night.

Description

The Joshua Desert has a temperature of 2 and a downfall of 0, so it never rains or snows. The sky is a clear blue (#6eb1ff) with a pale fog (#c0d8ff). Grass uses the colour #ffeba3, foliage uses #7fae4d, and water uses the standard overworld blue (#3f76e4).

The biome's ambient sound is the cave mood sound, and its background music is the vanilla desert track. Its bright, open sky makes the biome feel exposed during the day and dangerous after dark.

The defining plant is the Joshua tree, which is made of the Joshua wood set (see Joshua Wood). Joshua trees come in three sizes. Large trees have a trunk 8 to 12 blocks tall, and medium trees have a trunk 6 to 8 blocks tall. Every size has short beard-like branches along the trunk and double-block leaves at the crown. Joshua shrubs, one per wood family, are placed between the trees.

Generation

The Joshua Desert is one of the two Regions Unexplored biomes that replace the vanilla Desert biome. In the biome selection table, it has the same weight as Saguaro Desert, so the two share the vanilla desert climate. It is found in hot, dry climate cells.

Across the pack, the Joshua Desert covers about 0.43% of the land surface. Its cave share at y=-30 is about 0.18%.

Fear Nightfall weights some biomes more heavily as horror biomes. The Joshua Desert is not one of them, and deserts stay close to their normal share. Its horror content comes from the mobs and structures that the other mods add to it.

Features

  • Joshua trees. Trees are placed in weighted groups: small trees at weight 4, medium trees at weight 3 and large trees at weight 2. They are the only tall vegetation in the biome.
  • Shrubs and grass. Joshua shrubs are placed between the trees. Mallow, desert shrub on grass, dense sandy grass and sparse short grass are scattered over the sand.
  • Desert plants. The vanilla desert plant set is present: cactus, dead bush, sugar cane, pumpkin patches, glow lichen, and red and brown mushrooms.
  • Vanilla desert structures. Desert wells, fossils and monster rooms (dungeons) are generated as in the vanilla desert. Water and lava springs also appear in the biome.
  • Ores. The biome uses the standard overworld ore set, including coal, iron, gold, redstone, lapis, copper, and diamond in its buried, medium and large variants. Other mods add ore features here: Butchery places Sulfur ore, Iron's Spellbooks places Mithril ore, and Born in Chaos adds infected diamond ore and black argillite.
  • Cave urns and wild flax. Supplementaries adds cave urns and wild flax to the terrain.

The biome has no precipitation. The only water sources listed for it are the springs.

Mobs and structures

The Joshua Desert has a long hostile spawn list. The most common hostile mobs are the vanilla spider, skeleton, creeper, slime and zombie. Beyond the vanilla mobs, the biome spawns many Born in Chaos mobs, such as Dread Hound, Krampus and Nightmare Stalker. It also spawns Iron's Spellbooks Necromancer and Graveyard Skeleton Creeper and Nightmare mobs, and the Mutant Monsters mod adds Mutant Creeper, Mutant Skeleton and Mutant Zombie. Passive animals are sheep, pigs, chickens, cows, armadillos, horses and donkeys. Bats and glow squid appear as ambient and underground creatures.

The biome can generate about 167 structures. They include vanilla desert pyramids, Terralith fortified desert villages and desert outposts, the Born in Chaos Firewell, Iron's Spellbooks Catacombs, Nova Structures illager hideouts, and many small desert houses from the mods that add towns and camps. The full mob and structure lists are in the tables below.

Tips

  • Hostile mobs are the main threat in this biome, especially at night. Carry light and avoid camping in the open sand.
  • The structure table below lists which desert structures can generate here, such as the desert pyramid and the fortified desert villages.
  • Cacti damage anything that walks into them, so keep them out of the path when moving through the desert.
