The Bloody Gadfly is a hostile mob added by Born in Chaos. It is a small, fast melee creature with 20 health (10 hearts) that appears only in dark conditions in rivers, beaches, swamps and swamp huts in the Overworld. It has no ranged attack, so the danger it poses comes from its close-range melee attacks and from its speed, which is faster than a zombie. It drops Corpse Maggots and Bloody Gadfly Eyes, a food item.

Spawning

Bloody Gadflies spawn naturally as single mobs. Natural spawning is controlled by the bloodyGadflySpawn game rule (category: Spawning, default true). Setting it to false stops all natural spawns of the mob; mobs that are already in the world are not affected.

The spawn check for this mob is stricter than the biome list in the spawn table below. A position can only spawn a Bloody Gadfly when all of these conditions hold:

• The position is in the Overworld.
• The biome is a river, a beach, a swamp (minecraft:is_swamp) or a swamp hut biome.
• If the position has open sky above it, the raw light level is 4 or lower. If it does not, the raw light level is 0.
• It is placed on the ground, using the on-ground spawn placement.

In practice this means night-time spawns on river banks, beaches and swamps, and spawns in dark swamp-hut interiors. Its listed spawn weight is 7 in each biome shown in the spawn table, which places it among the more common hostile mobs in those biomes at night.

Behavior

The Bloody Gadfly is a walking mob. It has no flight, and it can swim: it floats up when in water. It climbs single blocks easily, since its step height is 3 blocks. Its movement speed is 0.28, faster than a zombie's 0.23. Its hitbox is 0.6 blocks wide and 1.9 blocks tall.

Combat

It uses a melee attack at speed 1.0. It only swings when a target is within about one block and it has a line of sight to that target. It has no ranged attack and no special attack pattern. When it is hit by a creature, it targets that attacker.

It takes no damage from falling or from cactus. Its entity type is arthropod, so the Bane of Arthropods enchantment applies to it.

Targeting

• It targets the nearest player, with no further conditions.
• It targets cows and horses only while it does not have the Regeneration effect.

Avoidance

It runs away from spiders and cave spiders within 12 blocks. It walks away at speed 1.0 and sprints at speed 1.2 when it is within that range.

Effects

• On spawn: the mob gains Resistance VI for 1 second (20 ticks). It takes no damage during that time.
• Slow falling: every tick, it is given Slow Falling III, so it falls slowly. This effect is always on.

Death

When it dies, its body is removed 20 ticks later. It gives 6 experience points.

Drops

The mob drops a Corpse Maggot and, sometimes, a Bloody Gadfly Eye. The table below lists the drops in full.

• Corpse Maggot: 2 to 3 always.
• Bloody Gadfly Eye: either 0 or 1, at a 50% chance each.

Looting does not raise the number of eyes. The eye's count is set by a fixed 0 to 1 roll, and the loot table has no Looting function.

Tips
