The Fungal Caves is an underground biome added by Terralith. It exists only in the cave layer and never generates on the surface. Its floors, walls and ceilings are covered in mushrooms, moss, glow lichen and hanging roots, so the biome reads as a damp, overgrown cavern rather than a stone cave. In Fear Nightfall it is a hostile place: its monster spawn list is one of the longest in the cave layer and includes several horror mobs, among them the Dread Hound from Born in Chaos.

Description

The biome's air space is carved by the vanilla cave, extra underground cave and canyon carvers. Its decoration is what sets it apart. Floors are patched with moss blocks, coarse dirt and rooted dirt; the moss and rooted dirt are chosen by noise, so patches shift between the two within a few blocks. Floor patches are 2 to 4 blocks deep and spread over radii of about 5 blocks. Plants on the floor are a mix of brown and red mushrooms (in small, medium and large sizes), dead bushes and large ferns.

Ceilings use the same patch method but are much sparser. Hanging roots are the common ceiling plant: the hanging roots feature places hanging roots nine times out of ten and spore blossoms the rest of the time. Vines and glow lichen patches add to the walls. Lichen patches spread up to 3 blocks horizontally and vertically from their origin.

The water is blue (#3f76e4) and the fog is pale blue (#c0d8ff). The ambient cave sound plays every 6000 ticks, and the biome uses the Stony Peaks music.

Generation

Fungal Caves has a climate of temperature 1 (the warm end of the range) and downfall 0.3 (drier than most biomes). It is placed by the cave layer. In Fear Nightfall it covers 0.44% of the cave layer at y = -30 and 0% of the surface. It is not one of the biomes that the pack gives 6× weight; it shares the cave layer with the other cave biomes such as Frostfire Caves, Infested Caves and Spider Nest.

Strongholds are biased toward this biome by a vanilla tag, so a stronghold is more likely to be found near Fungal Caves than in a random cave. Players searching for a stronghold should check the caves of this biome first.

Features

Ores follow the standard underground set (coal, copper, iron, gold, redstone, lapis and diamond, plus the andesite, diorite, granite, gravel, dirt and tuff clusters). The biome adds extra coal ore, and the pack's mod ores also generate here: infected diamond ore and black argillite from Born in Chaos, sulfur ore from Butchery and mithril ore from Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks.

Fungal Caves can also contain lava lakes, amethyst geodes, and both normal and deep monster rooms (the monster rooms are the spawners that players find in dark rooms underground). Farmer's Delight adds its own Mushroom Colonies to the biome.

Mobs and structures

The monster spawn list is dominated by vanilla cave mobs at the top: Spider, Skeleton, Creeper and Slime have the highest weight (100 each). Horror mobs make up much of the rest of the list, including the Dread Hound (weight 7), Necromancer, Slime Golem and a number of rare bosses with weights of 1 or 2, such as the Krampus and the Supreme Bonescaller.

Water creatures include Corpse Fish and Glutton Fish. Ambient spawns are Coal Golem and bat, and underground water spawns glow squid.

Over 100 structures can generate in the biome. Notable ones include the Graveyards mushroom structures, the Born in Chaos firewell, the Structory Towers great toadstool, the Nova Structures bunker and the vanilla mineshaft. The full mob and structure tables are generated below.

Tips

Light the cave before settling in. The monster list is long and includes Dread Hounds and Necromancers.

If you are looking for a stronghold, search the Fungal Caves before other cave biomes, because strongholds are biased toward this biome.

Brown and red mushrooms grow on the floor and can be harvested. Mushroom patches from Farmer's Delight are listed in Mushroom Colonies.
