The Forested Highlands is a cool, rainy overworld biome added by Terralith. It is a hilly, tree-covered biome that is tagged as a taiga, so mods that place structures or spawns in taigas also treat it as one. In Fear Nightfall it is one of the places where the pack's horror mobs and structures are mixed into an otherwise ordinary forest landscape, so a player should check the area before settling there.

Description

The biome uses Terralith's highland terrain: rolling hills that break into stone cliffs and gravel-covered slopes, with shallow creeks cutting between them. Grassy stone cliff features from Terralith's canyon generation also appear on the slopes. Underground it has lava lakes and monster rooms, and small deposits of gravel and other stone variants are scattered through the terrain.

The tree cover is dense and mixed. Terralith places trees of several sizes here, from tiny and small trees up to tall and mid-sized conifers, and a set of maple-style trees. Glow lichen and vines are added to the trees and rock faces. The ground layer includes grass, flower patches, tall flowers and brown mushrooms.

The biome's colours are cool and blue-tinted. Its fog is pale blue (#c0d8ff), its sky is blue (#78a7ff), and its water is blue (#3f76e4). The foliage is a warm red-orange (#ec5448), which stands out against the blue sky and fog. The biome plays the vanilla ambient cave sound.

Generation

Forested Highlands is a cool, humid biome with a temperature of 0.36 and a downfall of 0.2. Its precipitation is rain, not snow. It occupies 0.74% of the land surface in Fear Nightfall.

The pack's custom biome distribution places biomes of the same type next to each other, so Forested Highlands usually borders other forests, taigas and highlands rather than deserts or jungles. It is not one of the biomes given six times the normal weight in the pack's spookier-world change, so its horror content comes from the mobs and structures it hosts rather than from being weighted more often than other biomes.

Features

Forested Highlands has a large set of ore features. It includes the vanilla coal, iron, copper, gold, redstone, lapis, and diamond ores, along with the vanilla andesite, diorite, granite and tuff stone variants. Several Fear Nightfall mods add their own ores here: Born in Chaos adds black argillite and infected deepslate diamond ore, Irons Spellbooks adds mithril ore, and Butchery adds sulfur ore in deepslate.

Terrain and plant features unique to the biome include:

  • Creeks: shallow water channels through the valleys.
  • Gravel discs: flat patches of gravel on the surface.
  • Lava lakes: both surface and underground lava lakes, from the vanilla lake features.
  • Spring water: water springs that appear in the terrain.
  • Pumpkin and sugar cane patches: vanilla patches that spawn on the surface.
  • Wild flax and cave urns from Supplementaries, which add decorative plants and pots to the biome.

The biome also has the vanilla amethyst geodes and monster rooms, which are underground dungeons that can contain hostile mobs and loot.

Mobs and structures

The biome's hostile mob table is long. The most common hostiles are the vanilla spider, skeleton, creeper and slime, followed by zombies and a range of Fear Nightfall monsters. Mobs from the pack's horror mods in this table include the Ghoul, Revenant, Necromancer, Skeleton Creeper, Krampus, Dread Hound, Sir Pumpkinhead, Nightmare Stalker, and Lifestealer. Most of these have low spawn weights, so they are uncommon, but the table is large enough that a player may meet several of them over a short walk. Passive animals are sheep, pigs, chickens, cows, horses, wolves and donkeys.

Structures are numerous. Of the structures that can generate here, many come from the horror mods in the pack. Born in Chaos adds a dark tower and firewell, and Graveyards adds haunted houses and dead trees. Terralith's fortified villages are part of the pack's shared village set, so they appear here alongside vanilla, Luki's and other village types.

Tips

  • The hostile mob table is long and includes several Fear Nightfall monsters. Carry a light source and a weapon, and expect hostiles in dark areas and at night.
  • Lava lakes are placed both on the surface and underground. Check the ground before walking across a hillside at night.
  • The creeks and springs make it easy to find water for farming and brewing, but the cliffs and slopes make building flat areas harder.
  • The trees are dense, so the biome is a source of wood, but clearing large areas takes time.
