The Revenant is a hostile undead mob added by The Graveyard. It is a melee attacker with 25 health that spawns in cold and snowy overworld biomes, joins the mod's nightly undead hordes, and appears in small graveyard structures. Its main trait is that it can get back up once after a killing blow, so it is harder to finish off than its health suggests. A player encounters revenants most often at night and in the cold biomes where the mob spawns.

Spawning

Revenants spawn naturally as hostile monsters in 81 overworld biomes. The list includes vanilla snowy and taiga biomes, frozen and cold oceans, frozen rivers, tundra, and biomes added by other mods. Natural spawns use the normal hostile-mob rules, so they appear in low light and in darkness. Each natural spawn group contains 3 to 5 revenants, with a spawn weight of 25 in every listed biome. The spawn weight and group size settings in the mod's configuration do not change natural spawning; the values come from the biome data.

Revenants also spawn in small graveyard structures (see Graveyards). Within the bounds of those structures, the spawn list is replaced with skeleton creepers, revenants and ghouls.

Nightly horde

The Graveyard runs a nightly undead horde event (Graveyard Hordes). The horde timer is set to 24,000 ticks (20 minutes) by default, plus up to 1,200 random extra ticks. When the timer fires at night, a 1 in 5 roll decides whether the horde spawns. The horde is placed 24 to 47 blocks from a random online player and is led by a patrol leader. Each horde is either a group of ghouls and revenants (a 50 percent chance) or a group of illagers. Hordes can attack together, so the revenants in one are more dangerous than a single revenant.

Spawn egg

A Revenant Spawn Egg is available. It stacks to 64.

Behavior

A revenant has 25 health, 2 armor and 3.5 attack damage (1.75 hearts per hit). Its base movement speed is 0.155 and it has a follow range of 25 blocks. While it has a target, it gains 0.15 movement speed, which makes its pursuit much faster than its walking pace.

It targets players by default. It also targets villagers, wandering traders and other villager-type mobs, and iron golems. It does not target the Lich when the Lich damages it.

Its melee attack has a reach of about 1.4 blocks. A swing lasts 9 ticks, and the damage is applied 7 ticks into the swing. Once the swing begins, the hit lands even if the player steps back, because the damage is not checked against range again. A new swing can start 20 ticks (one second) after the previous one.

The revenant burns in sunlight, as the mod's default settings allow. It can also be affected by the Wither effect.

Reanimation

A revenant can avoid death once. When a hit would reduce its health to zero or below, and it has not used this ability before, there is a 1 in 4 chance that the revenant does not die. Instead, it falls and takes no damage for 120 ticks (6 seconds). During this time its movement speed is reduced by 0.3. It then gets up with the health it had before the killing blow. The ability is spent after one use, and that state is saved with the world.

Fire damage and damage that bypasses resistance remove the ability for that revenant at once. A fire or bypass hit that is not lethal therefore uses up the chance, and a lethal one kills the revenant outright.

Drops

A revenant gives 5 experience points when killed. Its loot table drops bone (0 to 2, increased by Looting) and corruption (0 to 1, increased by looting). Corruption is the currency used in trades with the Nameless Hanged and is part of the mod's corruption mechanic (see Corruption, Vial of Blood and Summoning the Lich).

Fear Nightfall changes

Graveyard structures are placed about 30 percent closer together in Fear Nightfall. Where they share a structure set with structures from other horror mods, they receive 6 times the weight. Small graveyards, and the revenants inside them, are therefore more likely to appear in the pack than in the base mod.

Tips

Damage from fire or from sources that bypass resistance prevents the revenant from reanimating. Use a fire weapon or a similar source when you want the next lethal hit to be final. Remember that a fire hit that is not lethal uses up the chance as well.

A revenant chases villagers and iron golems as well as players. Keep villagers and golems out of the area during a fight, or the revenant will switch to them.

Hordes are the main danger. Several revenants and ghouls can attack at once at night, so fight with your back to a wall or in a narrow doorway to limit how many can reach you.

Revenants burn in daylight. A group that is still active after dawn will take fire damage in the open, so it is safe to wait for the sun if you can keep your distance.
