Corruption, Vial of Blood and Summoning the Lich is the progression chain added by The Graveyard. A player collects Corruption from the mobs and chests of the mod's graveyard structures, uses the Bone Dagger to fill a Vial of Blood, and then takes that vial and the three bone staff fragments to an altar at night to summon the Lich, a multi-phase boss also called the Corrupted Champion. Defeating the Lich grants bone staffs, which summon Ghoulings.

In Fear Nightfall, Graveyard structures are placed about 30% closer together than in the unmodified pack. Where they share a placement set with other horror structures, they carry six times the weight. The Lich is also immune to the Tide's Pocket Watch, which otherwise freezes bosses.

Obtaining

Corruption cannot be crafted. It comes from mob drops and structure chests, and the Vial of Blood comes from the Bone Dagger. The bone staff fragments needed for the summoning are found in ruins, as described in Graveyard Ruins.

Bone Dagger · Crafting

The Bone Dagger is the only item in this chain with a crafting recipe. It is a stone-tier sword, and its stats are listed in the table below. The Vial of Blood has no recipe. It is obtained only by killing villagers with the Bone Dagger while holding glass bottles in the offhand (see Usage below).

Corruption appears in several chest tables in graveyard structures. The crypt's main chest table gives Corruption in about 31.3% of chests, averaging 2.7 per roll. The crypt's urn table gives it in about 5.0% of chests, averaging 2.9 per roll.

Several mobs drop Corruption when killed. The Acolyte always drops exactly 1, and the Nightmare drops 1 to 3. The Skeleton Creeper, Reaper, Ghoul and Revenant each drop 0 or 1. A fortune bonus can increase the amount for all of these mobs. Acolytes spawn inside the crypt structure, and the other mobs spawn naturally across much of the overworld.

Usage

Corruption and the Nameless Hanged

Corruption is the currency of the Nameless Hanged, a trader placed at the Dead Tree structure. Every offer the Nameless Hanged makes is priced in Corruption. Prices from the trade table include:

  • bone staff fragments, 64 Corruption each;
  • enchanted diamond armour and tools, 32 Corruption each, and enchanted iron armour and tools, 12 Corruption each;
  • wither skeleton skulls, 48 Corruption each;
  • ancient debris, 16 Corruption each;
  • dark iron ingots, 4 Corruption each.

The trade table also sells vanilla goods such as candles, ghast tears, totems of undying, ender pearls and blackstone, each for a small Corruption price. The bone staff fragments are among the most expensive offers.

Corruption stacks to 64 and is also an ingredient in some crafting recipes (see Corruption, Vial of Blood and Summoning the Lich).

Vial of Blood and Bone Dagger

The Vial of Blood is filled by the Bone Dagger, a stone-tier sword that breaks cobweb and glass blocks 30 times faster, including tinted and stained glass. Its break-speed bonus applies only to the dagger itself. When the dagger kills a villager (the default entity for the blood collection config option), the following happens, depending on what the player holds in the offhand:

  • Glass bottle in the offhand. One bottle is used up and a new Vial of Blood is created. If that bottle was the last one in the offhand, the vial goes into the offhand. Otherwise it goes into the inventory.
  • Vial of Blood in the offhand. The vial gains 0.1 blood. A kill that would bring the blood to 0.9 or above does nothing, so the stored value stays below 0.9.

A new vial reads as 0.1 blood, shown as 1/8 in the tooltip. The tooltip shows eight levels, and a vial between 0.8 and 0.9 is shown as full. The altar needs at least 0.8 blood, so a fresh vial needs about seven villager kills with the dagger while the vial is in the offhand.

Summoning the Lich

The altar at the altar structure is used to summon the Lich. All of the following must be true when the vial is used on the altar:

  • It is night, or the dimension has a fixed time. Daytime summoning is not possible.
  • The difficulty is not Peaceful.
  • The vial held in the hand has at least 0.8 blood. The config option isBossSummonableItem can list an alternate item to trigger the altar. The default list contains a debug stick.
  • The altar has not already been used. After a summoning, the altar is marked as bloody and will not summon again.
  • The three bone staff fragments (upper, middle and lower) are placed in the frame pattern around the altar. The config option summoningNeedsStaffFragments is true by default.

When the summoning starts, the vial is used up, and in survival or adventure mode the player is given Darkness for 430 ticks. All staff fragment blocks in the 16 by 16 area around the altar are removed, and the Lich appears above the altar, facing away from the altar's frame.

The fight has three phases:

  • Casting phase. The Lich has 400 health and casts spells on a cooldown. It summons falling corpses, conjures fangs, shoots up to five skulls at a time, teleports the player and heals itself, and levitates the player. It is invulnerable during some spells.
  • Hunt phase. The Lich drops to 200 health, gains a speed bonus and an attack damage bonus while attacking, blinds the player and teleports toward them. The hunt lasts 800 ticks. A loud cracking sound marks its approach.
  • Final form. The Lich is at low health and keeps attacking.

During the fight, Ghouls are summoned every 400 ticks until 6000 ticks of fight time have passed, and then every 600 ticks until 12000. The number of summoned mobs is capped at 30. The boss music plays unless disabled. When the Lich dies, it drops one of the five bone staffs. The full stats and spells of the Lich are on its own page. The nightly undead horde described in Graveyard Hordes is a separate event that can also occur at night.

Crafting ingredient

Corruption is used in the Dark Iron Ingot recipe, which combines it with an iron ingot, and in several urn recipes that also use Dark Iron and bone. The recipes are listed in the table below.

Items

The Bone Dagger is the tool that gathers blood for the summoning, and it breaks cobweb and glass quickly. The Vial of Blood is the single-use key item for the altar, and it does not stack. Corruption is the trade currency for the Nameless Hanged and an ingredient in some crafting recipes. The table below lists the stats of all three items.
