The Wraith is a hostile flying mob added by The Graveyard. It has 20 health (10 hearts), a melee attack of 6.5 damage (3.25 hearts) and no armour. Wraiths are not part of the natural spawn tables, the structure spawn lists or the nightly Graveyard Hordes, so a player meets one only by opening a sarcophagus or by using a spawn egg. Once it appears, it hunts players and attacks them while it is aggressive.

Spawning

A wraith is produced in one way in normal play: a player opens an unlocked sarcophagus that was not placed by a player.

  • Sarcophagi. Using a sarcophagus opens its storage menu and then, if the block is unlocked, has a 1-in-4 chance to summon a wraith. The check only runs below Y 62. The wraith appears one block above a random air space within 2 blocks of the player, on the horizontal axes. The sarcophagus locks itself (both halves) when this happens, so each sarcophagus can summon at most one wraith. Each summon grants the advancement "Taking from the Dead" to the player who opened the sarcophagus.
  • Player-placed sarcophagi. A sarcophagus that a player places is locked as soon as it is placed, so it never rolls for a wraith.
  • Nothing else spawns them. The wraith has no biome spawn entries. The structure monster overrides list acolytes, corrupted illagers, ghouls, revenants and skeleton creepers, but not wraiths. The horde spawner does not use it either. The wraith is not gated by the mod's per-mob enable option (wraith.enabled, default false), because the mod never reads that option, so the sarcophagus summon works with the default config.
  • Spawn egg. The Wraith Spawn Egg creates a wraith directly. It is listed in The Graveyard creative tab.

Does not spawn naturally in any biome (see Obtaining/Spawning text).

Behavior

The wraith is a flying monster with no gravity. It ignores fall damage and does not make footstep sounds. Its pathfinding avoids fire, water, fences and cocoa blocks.

  • Targeting. It attacks the nearest player it can see within its 16-block follow range. It also retaliates against whatever hurts it.
  • Movement. When it has no target it drifts around at random and turns to look at nearby players within 8 blocks. Its flying speed is 0.35. While it is aggressive, a +0.2 transient speed bonus is added to that speed, for a total of 0.55.
  • Melee. It uses a standard melee attack with 6.5 damage per hit.
  • Projectiles. Arrows do no damage to it. Other projectiles, such as tridents, hit normally.
  • Immunities. It cannot be damaged by sources that bypass armour, status effects or shields. By default it cannot be withered (wraith.canBeWithered, default false), and it burns in daylight (wraith.canBurnInSunlight, default true).
  • Collision. Wraiths do not collide with other wraiths.
  • Death. It plays its death animation for 42 ticks (2.1 seconds) before it is removed.

Light snuffing

The wraith's lowest-priority goal makes it put out light sources near the ground beneath it. It checks the two blocks directly below its position about once every 10 ticks, and it skips about 30 percent of those checks.

  • A lit candle or lit brazier is put out immediately.
  • A torch, lantern or wall torch has a 1-in-10 chance per check to be converted into the matching soul torch, soul lantern or soul wall torch. A converted lantern keeps its hanging and waterlogged state, and a converted wall torch keeps its facing.
  • Each light it puts out or converts counts toward a limit of 10 per wraith. After that, the goal stops for the rest of the wraith's life. The count is saved with the wraith.
  • Putting out a candle or brazier with a player within 10 blocks grants the advancement "Who turned the lights off?". Converting a torch or lantern does not.

The snuffing never touches soul torches, soul lanterns or any other light source it does not list, so those keep burning near a wraith.

Drops

The wraith has no loot table of its own, so it drops no items. It drops 5 experience points.

No item drops.

Tips

  • Fight it in the open. It hovers, so a melee player has to keep close and move with it. Arrows are useless against it, so use melee or non-arrow projectiles.
  • Expect it near sarcophagi. Open a sarcophagus only when you are ready to fight, because the summon happens on the same click that opens the storage menu.
  • Protect your lights. Candles and braziers are put out on sight, and torches and lanterns are changed into soul versions. Soul torches and soul lanterns are safe from it, so they are the better choice for lighting a base where a wraith roams.
  • Use daylight. The wraith burns in sunlight by default, so a wraith that stays in the sun takes fire damage.
