The Corrupted Illagers are two hostile melee mobs added by The Graveyard: the Corrupted Pillager and the Corrupted Vindicator. They are corrupted versions of the vanilla pillager and vindicator. Both have 24 health (12 hearts) and move at the same speed, and they differ mainly in attack damage. They drop Corruption, the currency-like item used by the Nameless Hanged and in the Corruption progression, so players meet them early in the Graveyard content. In Fear Nightfall they are a regular night threat, because they appear in the underground Crypt structures and in the nightly Graveyard horde.
Spawning
Neither mob has a natural biome spawn entry. They appear in three ways:
- Crypt structures. The underground structure carries monster overrides on each of its pieces. Each spawn in a crypt piece picks from three entries: the Corrupted Vindicator (weight 35, 1 to 3 mobs per spawn), the Corrupted Pillager (weight 35, 1 to 3 mobs) and the Acolyte (weight 25, 1 mob). The two illagers therefore make up about three quarters of the crypt guards.
- Nightly Graveyard horde. See the Graveyard horde section below. Each illager horde is drawn from the same three types: about 40 percent Corrupted Pillager, 40 percent Corrupted Vindicator and 20 percent Acolyte.
- Spawn eggs. The
Corrupted Pillager Spawn Egg and the
Corrupted Vindicator Spawn Egg each create one mob and stack to 64.
The table below lists the spawn data for the two mobs.
Does not spawn naturally in any biome (see Obtaining/Spawning text).
Graveyard horde
The Graveyard runs a nightly horde event in the overworld. A timer counts down 24000 ticks (one Minecraft day) plus up to 1200 random extra ticks. When the timer fires at night, a 1-in-5 roll decides whether a horde spawns. The spawner then picks a random online player and places the horde 24 to 47 blocks away from that player on each axis. The spawn point must be in loaded chunks and must not be in a biome that excludes patrols.
Each horde is either a group of ghouls and revenants or a group of illagers, with equal odds. An illager horde draws from the three types listed above. The spawner makes up to the configured number of spawn attempts (40 by default) and places one mob per attempt, moving a few blocks sideways between attempts, so one horde can contain many mobs. Horde members that are not chasing a target walk long-distance patrols. Patrolling members are removed once they are more than 128 blocks from the nearest player. Killing a horde's patrol leader counts toward a Graveyard advancement.
Behavior
Both mobs use a melee-only attack. Their attack goal has a speed multiplier of 1.0, and neither mob has a bow, crossbow or other ranged attack. Each mob's melee damage is set by its attribute (see the variant section).
Their target selection is:
- the nearest player, if the player is in sight;
- villagers, wandering traders and other entities based on the abstract villager class, unless they are babies;
- iron golems.
The mobs do not attack baby villagers. Their movement speed is 0.35, and they track a target from up to 12 blocks away. When idle they wander and look at nearby players and mobs. They float in water.
Their door-opening depends on raids. The mobs open doors only while they are inside a raided area, so outside a village raid they usually cannot open doors. This makes doors and walls effective defences against them.
All villagers and wandering traders, from any mod, avoid Graveyard hostile mobs. The Graveyard adds an avoidance goal to villagers that makes them run when a Graveyard hostile comes within 10 blocks. Villagers near a horde will therefore leave the area.
Drops
Both mobs drop one
Corruption each time they die. Fortune adds up to one extra Corruption per level, so a Fortune III tool can yield up to four. The Corruption drop is not affected by looting. See Corruption, Vial of Blood and Summoning the Lich for what Corruption is used for, including the Nameless Hanged trades.

Variants
The two mobs are identical in health, movement speed, follow range and size (0.6 by 1.9 blocks). The Corrupted Pillager is the weaker of the two, with an attack damage of 3. The Corrupted Vindicator has an attack damage of 5. Its model is rendered in a damaged form.
The Acolyte, which is the third member of the crypt and horde groups, is covered on its own page.
| Mob | Health | Damage | Armor | Speed | Size | Type |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Corrupted Pillager | 24.0 | 3.0 | 0.3499999940395355 | 0.6×1.9 | Hostile | |
| Corrupted Vindicator | 24.0 | 5.0 | 0.3499999940395355 | 0.6×1.9 | Hostile |
Tips
Both mobs are melee-only, so a ranged weapon such as a bow lets you damage them before they reach you. The Corrupted Vindicator hits for 5 damage and the Corrupted Pillager for 3, so fight the vindicator first when both are close. Doors and one-block corridors limit how many mobs can reach you at once.
Crypts are underground, so bring light and be ready to meet several illagers in a small room. Nightly hordes can appear 24 to 47 blocks from the player and move toward them, so keep a lit, enclosed space nearby at night. Villagers near a horde will run away, so do not expect villager trades to be available while one is in the area.
