The Nameless Hanged is a passive, non-hostile mob added by The Graveyard. It is a trader that stays in place at the Dead Tree structure, cannot be harmed by normal attacks, and sells vanilla items, enchanted iron and diamond gear, and the Ominous Bone Staff Fragments needed for the Lich fight. It sells only at night, and its stock is rerolled each night. Its trades are paid in Corruption.

Spawning

It does not spawn naturally in biomes. Each one is placed by the Dead Tree structure, which contains exactly one Nameless Hanged in its template. The structure generates in forest, dense vegetation, coniferous tree and swamp biomes. The pack places horror structures, including dead trees, about 30% closer together than the mod does by default, so the structure is more common in the humid forests and swamps that the pack's horror content favours.

The Nameless Hanged can also be placed by hand with a Nameless Hanged Spawn Egg.

Does not spawn naturally in any biome (see Obtaining/Spawning text).

Behavior

The Nameless Hanged has two AI goals: it turns to look at a player who is trading with it, and it interacts with nearby players. It has no wandering, following or attack goals, so it never leaves its position and never attacks. It has no attack damage attribute. Its movement speed is 0.7, but it does not use it on its own.

It is effectively invulnerable. Its damage handler ignores every source except damage that bypasses invulnerability, such as falling into the void. Only that kind of damage removes it, and the removal does not drop anything. Explosions, lightning and potion effects have no effect on it. It cannot be pushed, and it never despawns when a player moves away.

Its interaction depends on the time of day:

  • Day: right-clicking it shows the message "Yes, I see you... But let me enjoy the sun for once. Come back at night." and plays its interaction sound. It does not open a trading screen.
  • Night: right-clicking it opens its trading screen, provided it has offers and no other player is trading with it.

While trading, each completed trade that rewards experience releases 3 to 6 experience orbs at the mob's position. Its ambient sounds are a creaking rope and a struggling breath, and it emits ash particles from its position.

Trades

Each night the Nameless Hanged rolls 7 to 9 offers at random from its trade table. Every daytime tick its offers are cleared, so the stock is rerolled the next time a player opens its trades at night. Most offers have one to twelve uses, and the stock cannot be restocked during the day.

Every offer costs Corruption. The notable offers are:

  • Ominous Bone Staff Fragments (upper, middle and lower): 64 Corruption each, one use per offer. The three fragments are needed to summon the Lich.
  • Diamond boots, chestplate, helmet, leggings, sword and axe: 32 Corruption each, one use. Each is enchanted with random levels from 5 to 19.
  • Iron boots, chestplate, helmet, leggings, sword and axe: 12 Corruption each, one use, also enchanted.
  • Wither Skeleton Skull: 48 Corruption. Ancient Debris: 16 Corruption. Black Shulker Box: 32 Corruption. Totem of Undying: 12 Corruption.
  • Emerald: 1 Corruption for one emerald, twelve uses. Many common items such as candles, bones, books, string and nether wart cost 1 to 2 Corruption.

Corruption comes from graves and from the mobs of the mod's graveyards. The "Source of Evil" advancement is earned by obtaining Corruption from graves or graveyard mobs. The mobs that drop it are the Ghoul, Revenant, Acolyte, Corrupted Pillager, Corrupted Vindicator, Skeleton Creeper, Reaper and Nightmare. It also appears in crypt chests and crypt urns.

Drops

The Nameless Hanged has no loot table of its own and drops nothing when it is removed. It cannot be killed in normal play.

No item drops.

Tips

  • Come at night. The Nameless Hanged refuses trades during the day, and its stock is only rolled once night arrives. Check the offers before dawn, because they disappear at the next daytime tick.
  • Bring Corruption. Every offer costs Corruption, so stock up on it from graves and graveyard mobs before visiting. The staff fragments cost 64 Corruption each, which is the most expensive item in the table.
  • Do not attack it. It ignores all damage, so attacks only waste time. Walk up and right-click it instead.
  • The Nameless Hanged cannot be moved, so the trader is only available at the place it spawned. A spawn egg gives a second one wherever it is used.
  • Ruins also contain the staff fragments. The fragments are found in ruin structures, so the Nameless Hanged is a shortcut rather than a requirement. See Graveyard Ruins.
  • Nightly Graveyard Hordes can reach the forests and swamps where the Dead Tree structure is placed, so cross those areas with light and a weapon.
