The Graveyard is a horror content mod for Minecraft 1.21.1 (NeoForge) that adds graveyards, crypts and other undead structures, a set of hostile undead and illager mobs, a multi-phase boss called the Lich, a bone-staff companion system and a nightly undead horde. It requires GeckoLib. In Fear Nightfall it is the main source of undead content in the overworld: its mobs spawn in most overworld biome types, and its horde arrives every night.

The mod's gravestones, urns, coffins and bone decorations give the pack most of its graveyard dressing, and its bone staffs and Vial of Blood tie the structures to the late-game boss fight.

Overview

The Graveyard adds 17 jigsaw structures, about a dozen hostile and neutral mob types, over 100 blocks and about 150 items (including block items and spawn eggs). It makes a small number of changes to vanilla behaviour, mainly how villagers and trees react to its content. Its progression runs from decorative graveyards and corruption drops early on, through the bone dagger, Vial of Blood and staff fragments in the middle game, to the Lich fight at the end.

Content

Structures are described on their own pages. The graveyard set is Graveyards, which covers the small, medium and large graveyards and the small grave variants placed in desert, savanna and mountain biomes. Other structures are the underground Crypt, the Haunted House, the Giant Mushroom Grave and Memorial Trees, the Graveyard Ruins (where the bone staff fragments are found), the Altar (The Graveyard) (where the Lich is summoned) and the Lich Prison, a floating structure in the sky.

Mobs are Acolyte, Corrupted Illagers (the corrupted pillager and corrupted vindicator), Ghoul, Revenant, Reaper, Nightmare, Skeleton Creeper, Wraith, the Nameless Hanged trader and the Lich boss. Each of the five bone staffs summons a Ghouling, a friendly companion.

Blocks and items cover the mod's decorative sets: Gravestones, Urns and Vases, Coffins and Sarcophagi, Bone Decorations, the Ossuary, Dark Iron and the remaining pieces listed under Graveyard Miscellaneous. The mod also adds twelve terrain helper blocks (tg dirt, coarse dirt, grass, moss, podzol, rooted dirt, stone, andesite, granite, diorite, tuff and deepslate) that structure terrain uses so that world generation does not overwrite it.

Mechanics

Structure placement. Each structure is placed by random spread and must pass a terrain check, so it is not built on steep or broken ground. The crypt generates underground between Y -40 and Y -10. The Lich Prison is fixed at Y 210 and floats over ocean biomes. The other structures sit at the surface on biome tags that cover forests, taigas, plains, deserts, savannas, mushroom fields, jungles, swamps and snowy terrain. Spacing for each structure is given on its own page.

Monster spawns. The mod adds five natural spawn entries through biome tags: Ghoul (weight 25, groups of 2 to 5) in coniferous, dense and swamp biomes; Revenant (weight 25, groups of 3 to 5) in cold and snowy biomes; Reaper (weight 10, groups of 2 to 3) in spooky biomes; Nightmare (weight 7) in plains, snowy, sandy, wasteland, dry and swamp biomes; and Skeleton Creeper (weight 20) in almost every overworld biome type. Structures also override the monsters inside their bounding boxes, so a crypt spawns acolytes and illagers, and a small graveyard spawns skeleton creepers, revenants and ghouls.

Graveyard horde. Every 24000 ticks plus a random extra of up to 1200 ticks, the mod checks for a horde in the overworld. At night a 1-in-5 roll passes, and the horde spawns 24 to 47 blocks from a random online player. It makes up to 40 spawn attempts. Half of hordes are ghouls and revenants. The other half are illagers: corrupted pillagers 40 percent, corrupted vindicators 40 percent and acolytes 20 percent of illager hordes. See Graveyard Hordes for the full rules.

Bone staffs and Ghouling. The five bone staffs (white, black, red, cyan and purple) each summon a Ghouling, a companion with 50 health, armour 5, attack 6.5 and a follow range of 35. Each owner has one Ghouling at a time. A staff summons a new one only after the old one has died. Right-clicking a Ghouling makes it hold its position, shift-right-clicking teleports it to the player, and right-clicking another entity orders it to attack. A Ghouling can wear a coffin or sarcophagus to gain a storage menu that only its owner can open.

Bone dagger and Vial of Blood. The Bone Dagger is a stone-tier sword. It breaks cobwebs, tinted glass and stained glass 30 times faster than normal. Killing a villager with the dagger while holding a glass bottle in the offhand fills a Vial of Blood. Each further kill adds 0.1 blood to a vial already held, but a vial cannot be filled past 0.9 this way. The vial has eight level steps in its tooltip. See Corruption, Vial of Blood and Summoning the Lich for how blood, corruption and the boss fit together.

Wraith light snuffing. A Wraith looks for lit candles, braziers, torches and lanterns near it. It puts out candles and braziers. It also turns vanilla torches into soul torches and vanilla lanterns into soul lanterns, keeping their hanging and waterlogged state.

Nightmare teleportation. A Nightmare has 50 health and teleports toward players. It is neutral until provoked.

The Lich. The Lich has 400 health in its first phase. The fight has up to five internal phases. In the casting phase it summons falling corpses, conjures fangs, shoots skulls, teleports and heals, and levitates the player, each spell on its own cooldown. At 200 health it enters the hunt phase, which lasts 800 ticks. While hunting it has +40 attack damage and +0.15 movement speed. It blinds and teleports the player, and it is invulnerable during some spells and during the hunt. It summons ghouls every 400 ticks until 6000 ticks of fight time and then every 600 ticks until 12000 ticks, up to 30 summoned mobs at once. Its boss music plays unless disabled in the config. It drops one of the five bone staffs.

Changes to vanilla

  • Villagers flee hostile Graveyard mobs. A villager keeps a 10-block avoidance goal, moving at speed 0.7 to 1.0, and wandering traders do the same at speed 0.5.
  • Trees do not grow on the mod's helper blocks (tg dirt, coarse dirt, grass block, moss block, rooted dirt and podzol). Vanilla dirt is not affected.
  • Creepers are changed only for skeleton creepers, which explode through the mod's own code. Vanilla creepers are not affected.
  • Gravestones use a custom text screen in place of the sign editor. Other signs are not affected.
  • The mod adds its dirt and grass to vanilla tags. Fire and soul braziers count as candles, and the dark iron door and trapdoor count as doors and trapdoors. The Incarnated Evil music disc joins the music disc tag.
  • Each mob has config flags that decide whether it burns in sunlight and whether the wither effect can affect it.

In Fear Nightfall

  • The pack places horror structures about 30 percent closer together than the mod's defaults. Where a structure shares a placement set with other structures, it gets six times the weight. Graveyard structures are among these horror structures. Horror content is most concentrated in temperate to cool humid forests, taigas and swamps, where roughly a quarter of structures are horror. Deserts, jungles and peaks stay mostly normal.
  • Terralith biomes are included in the mod's structure biome tags, so graveyards and crypts can appear in Terralith biomes such as Moonlight Grove and Valley, Cloud Forest, Forested Highlands, Lush Valley, Wintry Forest and Lowlands, Haze Mountain and Painted Mountains.
  • Coffins and urns are containers that are shared between players. Lootr cannot give them a separate copy for each player, so the contents of a coffin or urn are shared.
  • The pack patched a crash in which the mod registered a structure type after registries had frozen, which could break world generation when another mod touched that structure during generation.

Obtaining

  • Structure chests. Graveyard structures hold chests from 22 mod loot tables, including small, medium, large, crypt, great crypt, bone, flesh and totem tables.
  • Natural spawns. The mobs described in the Mechanics section above spawn in the overworld in the biome tags listed there.
  • Graveyard hordes. Hordes spawn every night at a random time and place near a player, and they drop what their mobs drop.
  • Corruption. Corruption is dropped by graves and graveyard mobs. The Nameless Hanged trades it for items, including the bone staff fragments.
  • Ruins. The three bone staff fragments (upper, middle and lower) are each found in a different ruin structure, the Graveyard Ruins.
  • Lich fight. Defeating the Lich drops one of the five bone staffs.
  • Crafting. Gravestones, coffins, urns, braziers, dark iron items, the Bone Dagger and the Ossuary are craftable. Bone decorations are made with the bone carving recipe type.

Usage

  • Ghouling companions. Use a bone staff to summon a Ghouling. A coffin or sarcophagus can be equipped on it to add storage. A staff summons a replacement only after the owner's Ghouling has died.
  • Vial of Blood. Fill the vial by killing villagers with the Bone Dagger. A vial needs to reach at least 0.8 blood before it can summon the Lich.
  • Lich summoning. The Lich is summoned at the Altar (The Graveyard) at night, with a Vial of Blood of at least 0.8 and all three bone staff fragments. By default a debug stick can also be used as the summoning item.
  • Night horde. The horde spawns at night without a player action. Half of hordes are ghouls and revenants, and half are illagers.
  • Nameless Hanged. Trade with the Nameless Hanged for corruption-priced items, including enchanted diamond and iron gear and the bone staff fragments.

Items

The mod's decorative blocks and functional items are listed below. The table is generated from game data.

  • Terrain helper blocks: placeholders that structure terrain uses. They behave like the vanilla dirt, stone and grass blocks they are named after.
  • Bone staffs and Ghoulings: five staffs, each summoning a Ghouling of its own variant.
  • Bone Dagger: a stone-tier sword that breaks glass and cobwebs quickly and fills Vials of Blood.
  • Vial of Blood: charged by killing villagers with the Bone Dagger, and needed to summon the Lich.
