The Ghoul is a hostile mob added by The Graveyard. It is a melee monster with 20 health that attacks players, villagers and iron golems, and it roars to pull other hostile graveyard mobs onto its target. Ghouls spawn naturally across many forest, taiga, jungle and swamp biomes, appear in nightly hordes and in small graveyard structures, and join the army summoned during the Corrupted Champion fight.

Ghouls are not the companions summoned by bone staffs. Those are Ghoulings, a separate mob type.

Ghouls spawn naturally in 78 biomes with a spawn weight of 25 and a group size of 2 to 5. The mod's biome tags cover coniferous forests and taigas, dense vegetation (such as jungles and forested highlands) and swamps. Several of the biomes where ghouls spawn, including Dark Forest, Ominous Woods, Blackwood Taiga and bayous, are also among the horror biomes that Fear Nightfall weights at 6x in terrain generation. Natural spawning uses the standard monster rules.

Ghouls also come from three sources that the spawn table does not show:

  • Small graveyards. The small graveyard structure overrides its monster spawns to include ghouls, alongside revenants and skeleton creepers, so ghouls appear inside these structures.
  • Nightly hordes. A horde is either a group of ghouls and revenants or a group of illagers. Each horde has a 50 percent chance of being ghouls and revenants. Hordes are described in Graveyard Hordes.
  • The Corrupted Champion fight. During the Corrupted Champion fight, the boss summons ghouls on a timer. It summons a group every 400 ticks until 6000 ticks of fight time, then every 600 ticks until 12000 ticks, with each group containing up to 5 mobs. All summoned mobs together are capped at 30.

A Ghoul Spawn Egg, Ghoul Spawn Egg, is also available and stacks to 64.

Behavior

A ghoul has 20 health (10 hearts), 3 armor, a movement speed of 0.175, a follow range of 30 blocks and 50 percent knockback resistance. Its melee attack deals 4 damage (2 hearts) per hit and starts a new swing every 20 ticks. The damage is applied partway through the 14-tick attack animation, so a player who moves out of reach during the swing avoids the hit.

Ghouls choose targets from three groups: the nearest player, nearby villagers and wandering traders, and iron golems. Villagers flee from graveyard hostile mobs within 10 blocks, so a village next to a ghoul group will empty out. Ghouls burn in direct sunlight by default, and they can be withered by the Wither effect.

Ghouls have a rage ability. When a ghoul begins a melee swing from idle, it starts a 300-tick timer. When 35 ticks remain on that timer, the ghoul roars, about 13 seconds after the first swing. The roar lasts 35 ticks and does two things:

  • It sets the ghoul's current target as the target of every graveyard hostile within 45 blocks that has a line of sight to the ghoul. This is why a single ghoul in a horde or graveyard can pull a whole group onto one player.
  • It applies a movement speed modifier of -0.3 to the ghoul. That is larger than the ghoul's base speed of 0.175, so the ghoul stops moving until the rage ends.

When the timer runs out, the next swing from idle starts a new cycle. A ghoul that keeps fighting roars about every 15 seconds.

The rage is the only special ability the ghoul has. It has no phases and no ranged attack.

Drops

ItemAmountConditions
Rotten Fleshx1.0-2.0 +fortune bonus
Corruptionx0.0-1.0 +fortune bonus
Bonekilled_by_player, random_chance_with_enchanted_bonus

A ghoul drops 5 experience points. Its main drop is Rotten Flesh, 1 to 2 per kill, with a bonus from the Fortune enchantment. It can also drop 0 to 1 Corruption, also with the Fortune bonus. Corruption is the currency of the Nameless Hanged, who sell bone staff fragments for 64 Corruption at the dead tree structure. The ghoul's Bone drop only occurs when a player kills the ghoul, and its chance rises with an enchanted-weapon bonus (Looting).

Tips

  • Fight ghouls one at a time. Their roar pulls every other graveyard hostile within 45 blocks onto the same target, so break line of sight before a second ghoul or revenant joins the fight.
  • Use the rage window. While a ghoul is roaring and slowed, it cannot close distance, so a player can strike it or back away safely.
  • Expect ghouls in forest, taiga, jungle and swamp biomes, and inside small graveyard structures.
  • Corruption from ghouls is needed for the bone staff fragments, which are required for the Corrupted Champion fight.
