The Nightmare is a hostile mob added by The Graveyard. It stands 2.6 blocks tall, has 50 health (25 hearts) and hits for 10 damage (5 hearts). It is known for teleporting toward players who look at it, which blinds them and brings the Nightmare close. The mob takes no damage from projectiles, so it must be fought in melee. Killing one drops Corruption, the currency used by the Nameless Hanged.

Spawning

Nightmares spawn naturally in the overworld. They are not part of the Graveyard Hordes and no structure places them, so the only source of Nightmares is the natural spawning described below.

  • Biomes. A biome modifier adds Nightmares to biomes that carry any of these biome tags: plains, snowy, sandy, wasteland, dry overworld, and swamp. This covers 120 biomes, including many from other mods. Their spawn weight is 7 and every group is a single Nightmare.
  • Spawn weight. The nightmare.weight config option (default 10) has no effect on natural spawns. The spawn weight comes from the biome modifier data file, which sets it to 7.
  • Light. Nightmares use the standard hostile-mob spawn rules, so they appear in darkness rather than in bright daylight.
  • Pack effect. Fear Nightfall weights horror biomes at 6 times their normal weight, and those horror biomes cluster in temperate-to-cool humid forests, taigas and swamps. Swamps are one of the biome tags that spawn Nightmares, so the pack's swamps are a likely place to meet one.
  • Spawn egg. The Nightmare Spawn Egg, Nightmare Spawn Egg, stacks to 64.

Behavior

A Nightmare pursues a player mainly by teleporting, and it only targets a player under the conditions listed below.

  • Aggro. A Nightmare begins targeting a player who is within 64 blocks, has line of sight to the Nightmare and is looking almost directly at it. The player must not be wearing a carved pumpkin on the head. Aggro takes effect after about 5 ticks.
  • Staring teleports. While a targeted player keeps looking at the Nightmare and stays within about 19.6 blocks, the Nightmare teleports toward that player, about 16 blocks per teleport, until it is within about 4.9 blocks. Each teleport applies Blindness to the player for 100 ticks (5 seconds). The Nightmare does not teleport while the player is looking at it.
  • Pursuit teleports. If the player is not looking at the Nightmare and is more than 16 blocks away, the Nightmare teleports toward the player after 80 ticks (4 seconds), and it repeats this while the player stays out of its sight.
  • Teleport landing. Each teleport is placed at a random point near the target location and then moved down to the nearest solid block. A teleport fails if it would land in water.
  • Melee. When the player is in reach, the Nightmare swings. A swing takes 20 ticks and deals its damage on the 15th tick. It then waits 20 ticks before the next swing, which means about one swing per second. Its reach is about 1.4 blocks.
  • Projectile immunity. The Nightmare takes no damage from projectiles, such as arrows and thrown items. Melee attacks and other non-projectile damage still work.
  • Daylight. After a Nightmare has been targeting a player for 600 ticks (30 seconds), it can break off in daylight. This happens only when the Nightmare stands under open sky in bright light. Each tick it has a chance, scaled by the light level, to clear its target and teleport up to 32 blocks away in each direction.
  • Losing the target. A Nightmare drops its target when the player is 32 blocks or more away.
  • Death. Its body is removed 28 ticks after death. A player who kills a Nightmare while the player has Blindness is awarded the advancement "Peekaboo, I (still) see you!"

Drops

A Nightmare always drops 1 to 3 Corruption. Fortune adds a random extra amount that scales with the Fortune level. It also gives 5 experience.

Corruption is the currency of the Nameless Hanged, and some of that mob's trades, including the bone staff fragments, are priced in Corruption. See the table below for the full drop data.

Tips

  • Stop looking at the Nightmare. Its teleports and the 5-second Blindness depend on your view. Turn away and move out of its sight to break the pursuit.
  • A carved pumpkin worn on the head prevents a Nightmare from targeting you by staring.
  • Watch the distance. A Nightmare that is more than 16 blocks away and that you are not looking at teleports toward you after 4 seconds.
  • Use melee or other non-projectile damage. Arrows and thrown items will not hurt it.
  • Daylight is a safe window. If you have been chased for 30 seconds, a Nightmare under open sky in bright light will eventually teleport away.
  • Kill a Nightmare while you have Blindness to earn the "Peekaboo, I (still) see you!" advancement.
