Ashen Woodland is a forest biome added by Regions Unexplored (see Regions Unexplored). It is a grey, ash-covered forest that replaces part of the vanilla Mushroom Fields biome. In Fear Nightfall it is one of the pack's horror biomes: it is weighted six times higher than a standard biome, and it hosts a dense mix of undead, spiders, pumpkin monsters and spirits from Born in Chaos, Graveyard and other horror mods. A player who explores it at night should expect frequent hostile encounters.

The biome is rare on the surface, but it appears in the caves beneath it. Its ash-grey colours and muted fog make it easy to recognise, and its trees are built from Ashen Wood.

Description

The ground is covered in ashen dirt and ashen grass, a grey substrate that is the biome's defining surface. Some patches are "smouldering" variants of the same blocks. Grass is tinted a dull grey-green (#bdbcad), and foliage is a pale cream (#e9ddc2), so the forest reads as bleached rather than green. The water is slate grey (#8b949a). The fog (#9e958f) and sky (#b1ae9c) are muted grey, and ash particles drift through the air with a 0.5% probability. Ash vent patches are scattered across the biome.

The woods are a mix of two tree types that share the Ashen Wood log set. One is a broadleaf ashen tree and the other is an ashen pine, each chosen at random with equal chance for each tree in the group. Shrubs of the ashen natural set grow between the trees, and wilting trillium and ashen grass appear in patches.

Generation

Ashen Woodland takes part of the vanilla Mushroom Fields biome, with a default weight of 20 (alongside Alpha Grove and Tropics). Trees are not placed on surfaces covered by water, and their density follows a terrain noise slope.

Its share of the land surface is about 0.26%, and about 0.21% of the cave layer at y = -30. In Fear Nightfall the biome has a weight of six, which is the same tier as Dark Forest, Blackwood Taiga and Sleepy Hollows. Horror biomes make up about 11.9% of the land in the pack, up from 4.5% before the changes, so Ashen Woodland is a common horror destination.

The biome does not spawn wandering traders, patrols or zombie sieges. Strongholds are biased toward it, as with other biomes that carry the vanilla stronghold-biased tag.

Features

  • Trees. The biome uses the Ashen Wood log set. Its trees are ashen and ashen pine trees, and their wood strips to dead stripped wood.
  • Shrubs. The biome places shrubs from the ashen natural set.
  • Ores. Ores are placed the same as in most overworld biomes, with extra ore features from Born in Chaos (infected diamond ore and infected deepslate diamond ore), Butchery sulfur ore, and Irons Spellbooks mithril ore.
  • Flowers. Wilting trillium is the main flower. Its suspicious-stew effect is Mining Fatigue for 10 seconds (see Flower Effects and Suspicious Stew).
  • Terrain. The biome has ash vent patches, which are placed as local modifications, and a cave layer with a lake of lava at surface and underground levels.
  • Structures. The biome can generate 85 different structures. These include vanilla mineshafts, the Firewell from Born in Chaos, and a large number of Moog's structure builds such as barns, carts, cathedrals and market stalls.

Mobs and structures

The biome's monster table is the most varied in the pack, and the highest-weight monsters are the Slime Golem (weight 25), the Necromancer (18) and the Decaying Zombie (15). Other common hostiles are the Reaper, the Nightmare and Spirit of Chaos. The Dread Hound (weight 7) is also common, and the Ashen is present at weight 1. Bats spawn in the air as ambient mobs. Glow squid spawn in underground water, and several fish species, including bluegill, perch, minnow and carp, spawn in the surface water.

Tips

  • Carry a light source and bring a sword or a ranged weapon. The monster weights mean that groups of undead and spirits can appear within a short walk of a single structure.
  • Avoid the wilting trillium patches unless you need the Mining Fatigue effect for a stew. It is not a hazard by itself, but it is easy to harvest by accident while digging.
  • The ground is almost all the same grey, so it is hard to read the terrain at night. Mark your route with torches.
  • The biome has both vanilla and Born in Chaos diamond ore features, so it is one of the places to look for diamonds.
