Fen is a swamp biome added by Regions Unexplored. It is a wet, rainy lowland of peat ground, shallow water, cattails and pines, and its monster table mixes vanilla swamp monsters with many of the pack's horror mobs. It is rare in the pack, covering about 0.03% of the land surface, and it sits beside Fungal Fen in the same swamp group.

Description

The Fen is a flat, waterlogged biome. Its ground is part of the peat family from Peat and Silt: the grass is peat grass, and exposed dirt is peat coarse dirt in patches where the surface noise is above 0.15. The terrain is dotted with shallow water pools and water-edge decorations, and grass and foliage use a muted olive palette (grass #A5AF5D, foliage #85954A).

The water is a dark teal-blue (#4E8BB3), and the fog is a pale blue (#C0D8FF), with a blue sky (#7CA4FF). Water fog is closer than in most biomes, so distant terrain fades quickly in the water. The biome plays the vanilla swamp music and the cave ambient mood sound.

Generation

The Fen is a swamp group biome from Regions Unexplored. It is placed in the cool end of the vanilla swamp range: climate temperature noise between -0.45 and -0.1 and humidity above -0.35. The drier counterpart, Fungal Fen, takes the same temperature range with humidity below -0.35. The biome's own temperature is 0.85 and its downfall is 0.7, so the Fen has rain rather than snow.

Its share of the land surface in Fear Nightfall is about 0.03%, and it is effectively absent from the cave layer (0.00% at y = -30). Caves and canyons generate in it through the standard cave, extra-underground cave and canyon carvers.

Fear Nightfall weights a set of horror biomes at six times their normal weight. The pack's list names bayous and dead forests but does not name the Fen, so the Fen keeps its normal weight. A total of 155 structure types can generate here; the full list is in the table below.

Features

  • Water edges: a water-edge decoration is placed on the ocean floor, 10 attempts per chunk, along the shorelines of the Fen's pools.
  • Trees: pine, stripped pine and dead bog trees grow from nine placement attempts per chunk. Trees are only placed where the water is zero blocks deep, so they stand on dry ground in the Fen. Dense fallen oak logs are also scattered on the ground.
  • Shrubs: dead pine shrubs (weight 2) and pine shrubs (weight 3), placed in roughly one in four chunk attempts.
  • Plants: duckweed on the water, dense cattails, dense ferns and dense short grass. Vanilla swamp flowers, glow lichen, dead bushes, brown and red mushrooms, sugar cane, pumpkins and seagrass also appear.
  • Ores: the standard overworld ore set, including coal, iron, gold, copper, redstone, lapis and diamond (including buried and large veins). Mithril ore from Iron's Spellbooks and the infected diamond ore from Born in Chaos also generate here.
  • Liquids: spring water and spring lava, lake lava both underground and on the surface, underwater magma blocks, and clay disks in the water.
  • Peat interactions: sheep that graze peat grass turn it into peat dirt. Trees rooted on peat get peat dirt under the trunk. Crops grow on peat farmland, and wolves and foxes can spawn on peat grass.

Mobs and structures

The Fen's monster table is long and mixes vanilla swamp monsters with Born in Chaos, Graveyard and Iron's Spellbooks mobs. Spiders, skeletons, creepers and slimes have the highest spawn weights (100 each), followed by zombies (95). The stronger monsters are less common but present: Ghoul (weight 25), Necromancer (18), Nightmare and Dread Hound (7 each), Spirit of Chaos (4), Nightmare Stalker (2) and a single Lifestealer (1). Slime Golem also appears in the monster table.

Passive and ambient life includes frogs, box turtles and wolves on land, and bats, roly polys, snails and dragonflies in the air and on the ground. Water life is mostly fish: tropical fish, bluegill, perch and minnows are common, with rarer deep-water and cave species. Glow squid spawn in underground water.

Tips

  • Fen monsters spawn in darkness, so carry light and place torches around any base or camp.
  • Fire burns out faster in this biome, so do not rely on a single fire for protection.
  • Cattails, ferns and tall grass give cover, and the trees and water break up sight lines. Watch the edges of the pools as well as the ground.
  • Peat farmland supports crops, and sheep grazing peat grass turns it into dirt. A peat farm is a good use of the biome's flat, wet ground.
