The Roly Poly is a passive, tameable arthropod added by Critters and Companions. It has no attacks and does not defend itself, but a tamed Roly Poly can carry a wooden chest on its back, which turns it into a small, mobile storage container with 10 slots. It is a common ambient critter in forests, lush biomes and swamps.

Spawning

Roly Polys spawn naturally in the Overworld through the vanilla spawner, in the ambient mob category. Each spawn picks a group of nearby Roly Polys by weight:

  • Forest biomes (the c:is_forest tag): weight 5, groups of 1 to 3.
  • Lush biomes (the c:is_lush tag): weight 10, groups of 1 to 2.
  • Swamp biomes (the c:is_swamp tag): weight 10, groups of 1 to 2.

The mod's data places them in 57 biomes in total. The table below lists every one with its weight and group size.

No time, light or difficulty condition is set in the mod's spawn data, so Roly Polys can appear whenever their biome is loaded.

A Roly-Poly Spawn Egg summons one. The egg stacks to 64.

Roly Polys can also appear as jockeys. A baby Zombie has a 5% chance to spawn riding one, with the mount chosen evenly between a Roly Poly and a Snail.

Behavior

A Roly Poly has 16 health (8 hearts) and moves at a speed of 0.2. Its hitbox is 0.5 blocks wide and 0.4 blocks tall. It does not attack players or other mobs, and it does not target anything, so it poses no threat on its own.

It looks at players that come within 8 blocks. Its pathfinding treats lava and damaging fire as impassable, and it avoids danger fire, trapdoors and powder snow.

Roly Polys can be bred with dead bushes. An offspring inherits its variant from its parents, and there are 7 texture variants in total.

A Roly Poly is an arthropod, so enchantments that bonus against arthropods, such as Bane of Arthropods, apply to it.

When a Roly Poly has no owner and no name tag, it is allowed to despawn when no player is near it.

Taming

Right-clicking an untamed Roly Poly with a mushroom (of any kind) consumes the mushroom and gives a 1 in 10 chance to tame it. Failed attempts also consume the mushroom.

A tamed Roly Poly:

  • Follows its owner when they are more than 10 blocks away, and stops about 2 blocks from them.
  • Heals 2 health (1 heart) when its owner right-clicks it with a dead bush, consuming the bush. This only works when it is damaged.
  • Regenerates 1 health every 60 seconds while it is damaged.
  • Toggles between sitting and standing when its owner right-clicks it with any other item.

Chest

An adult tamed Roly Poly accepts a wooden chest when its owner right-clicks it with one, which consumes the chest. Babies cannot carry a chest.

  • The chest adds 10 storage slots, which can be accessed by shift-right-clicking the Roly Poly.
  • While its chest is open, the Roly Poly stops moving.
  • The chest raises the Roly Poly's hitbox height by 0.5 blocks.
  • The chest can be removed from the storage screen with the remove-chest button. This drops the chest and all of its contents on the ground.

Baby Roly Polys

A baby Roly Poly has 8 health. The penalty is removed when it grows up, and it returns to 16 health.

Drops

Roly Polys have no loot table of their own, so killing one drops nothing. The only items a Roly Poly leaves behind are its chest and the chest's contents, dropped when it dies or when its chest is removed.

No item drops.

Tips

  • A tamed Roly Poly follows its owner, so a chest-carrying one can be moved between bases. Give it a name tag to keep it from despawning.
  • Because the chance to tame is 1 in 10, collect several mushrooms before attempting to tame one.
  • Roly Polys cannot defend themselves, so a player who wants a clean kill should attack from a distance or use a bane-of-arthropods weapon.
