The Leaf Insect is a passive, ambient mob added by Critters and Companions. It lives in forests and jungles, where it walks to dropped leaf blocks, eats them and releases whatever the eaten block would drop. It cannot attack and has no combat value, but it is a steady source of saplings and sticks in the pack's wooded biomes. Leaf insects come in three colour variants and can be bred with leaves.

Spawning

Leaf insects are added to the overworld by Critters and Companions' biome modifiers. Their default natural spawn weight is 14 in jungle biomes and 6 in forest biomes, with groups of exactly 1. Spawns are listed by biome in the table below. The mob is in the Ambient spawn category, so it does not count toward the monster cap.

Its placement rule is stricter than the usual animal rule. A leaf insect spawns only at a height above sea level minus 16 blocks, and only when the block directly beneath it is dirt or a leaf block. The check does not test light level or time of day, so leaf insects appear in daylight and at night alike, provided the ground rule is met.

Fear Nightfall does not change the leaf insect's spawn weights. Its forest spawns do overlap with horror content, though. The pack concentrates horror structures and biomes in temperate-to-cool, humid forests, taigas and swamps, where roughly a quarter of biomes are horror. Jungles stay mostly normal. A leaf insect found in a forest is therefore more likely to share the ground with dangerous content than one in a jungle.

The spawn egg is stackable to 64 and places one insect when used.

Behavior

The leaf insect is an Animal with 6 maximum health (3 hearts), a movement speed of 0.2 and a follow range of 16 blocks. It is 0.4 blocks wide and 0.3 blocks tall. It has no attack damage and no armour. It never attacks players or other mobs, and it can be hurt and killed like any passive mob.

The insect runs these AI goals, in priority order:

  1. Float: Keeps it from sinking.
  2. Panic at speed 1.5: Runs from whatever hurt it.
  3. Breed at speed 1.0: Mates with another adult leaf insect when both are in love.
  4. Search leaves: When its main hand is empty and a leaf item lies within 8 blocks, it walks to the nearest one at speed 1.0.
  5. Tempt: Follows a player holding a leaf block.
  6. Follow parent at speed 1.25: Babies follow an adult.
  7. Dancing stroll at speed 1.0, then random look around.

Eating leaves

When the insect reaches a leaf item, it picks up one. It can only do this while its main hand is empty and it is not on cooldown. The eating sequence works as follows:

  • The insect holds the leaf for 10 ticks, plays its eat animation and sound, and produces a few particles of the leaf's block.
  • It then drops the results of rolling the eaten block's loot table. These are the random drops that block can give, such as the saplings and sticks that vanilla leaves can yield. The game rerolls up to 50 times if the table produces nothing.
  • If the table still gives nothing after 50 rolls, the insect drops a single stick.
  • After dropping its items, it waits 20 ticks before it can pick up another leaf.

Each leaf therefore takes about 30 ticks (1.5 seconds) to process once the insect is holding it, plus the time it takes to walk over.

Breeding and variants

Leaves are the breeding food. Any item in the leaves tag feeds a leaf insect into love mode. Babies use a smaller model with their own animation set. A baby's colour variant is inherited from its parents when both are leaf insects, so variants carry on through breeding. The adult has three colour variants.

Despawning

A leaf insect can despawn when no player is near, like most passive animals. Giving it a name tag stops this, so a named insect stays in place.

Drops

The leaf insect has no death loot table, so killing it yields nothing. Its items come from eating leaves, as described under "Eating leaves" above. The stick and sapling yields come from the leaves it eats, not from killing it.

No item drops.

Tips

  • Holding a leaf block lures the insect to you. The same leaf is the breeding food, so one stack of leaves serves both purposes.
  • To farm saplings or sticks, drop leaf items on the ground near a leaf insect within 8 blocks. The insect will walk over and process them, and the drops fall at its position. Each leaf takes about 1.5 seconds of processing, so a steady supply of leaves keeps it busy.
  • Keep a named insect if you want it to stay near a farm. Unnamed insects can wander off and despawn.
