The Stag Beetle is a passive, tameable insect mob added by Critters and Companions. It has 10 health (5 hearts) and a melee attack of 4 damage with 1.5 knockback. Wild beetles do not attack players. Tamed beetles guard their owner in melee, and they are immune to all projectile damage, so arrows cannot hurt them.

Spawning

Stag Beetles spawn naturally in forest biomes in groups of 1 to 2. Their overworld weight is 4 in forest biomes such as Dark Forest, Birch Forest, Old Growth Forest and Mystic Grove. They also spawn in Lush Caves at weight 10. The full list of 41 biomes is in the table below.

Outside Lush Caves, a beetle must stand on a block in the bug spawn ground tag (dirt, sand, gravel and similar blocks) with a raw light level of at least 5 at its spawn position. In Lush Caves, the spawn position needs block light above 0 and a floor from the bug spawn ground tag or stone. The mod profile lists no time-of-day requirement for these spawns.

Lush Caves beetles come from a custom spawner added by the mod. Every 40 server ticks, it picks one weighted entity for each player standing underground in a Lush Caves biome (sky light 0). Spawns are placed within 24 blocks of the player, and no more than 8 of these mobs are allowed in a 48-block box around the player. The spawner ignores vanilla spawn caps. The preventMonsterSpawnsInLushCaves option only affects hostile monsters, so it does not block these critters.

Fear Nightfall gives Dark Forest 6 times its usual biome weight. Dark Forest is one of the beetle's spawn biomes, so players moving through the pack's dark forests are more likely to find beetles there.

Behavior

Stag Beetles are passive mobs. They panic when standing in fire, lava or freezing conditions, stroll and look around, and breed with other Stag Beetles when fed berries.

A tamed beetle follows its owner from up to 10 blocks away and stops at 2 blocks. It can be ordered to sit. It attacks any mob that attacks its owner, and any mob its owner attacks, except creepers, ghasts and armor stands. Its melee attack is a delayed animated attack that deals 4 damage (2 hearts) and applies 1.5 knockback.

Stag Beetles are immune to projectile damage. They take normal damage from melee, fire, falls and other sources.

A wild beetle that is neither named nor tamed despawns when it is far from every player. Named and tamed beetles stay in the world.

Taming and healing

Stag Beetles use the c:foods/berry item tag for both taming and healing. Offering a berry to a wild beetle has a 1 in 10 chance to tame it. The berry is consumed whether or not the attempt succeeds.

Feeding a berry to a tamed beetle that is below full health restores 2 health and consumes the berry. A tamed beetle also regenerates 1 health every 60 seconds while it is below full health.

Babies

A baby Stag Beetle has half of its adult maximum health, rounded up to the next even number. The adult maximum is 10, so a baby has 6 health. The health is restored when the beetle grows up.

Drops

Stag Beetles have no loot table, so they drop nothing when killed.

No item drops.

Tips

  • Tame a beetle with berries and keep it near you in forests. Its 2-heart melee attack and knockback can push back small mobs that come close.
  • Stand a tamed beetle between you and a ranged mob. Arrows cannot hurt it, so it can absorb attacks from skeletons that would otherwise hit you.
  • Carry berries when exploring forests and Lush Caves. A berry restores 2 health to a tamed beetle, which is the quickest way to heal it between fights.
  • Name a beetle to keep it from despawning when you walk away from it.
  • Lush Caves can hold many beetles at once because the custom spawner ignores vanilla caps. Expect beetles there, and check the light level before you plan a beetle farm.
