Dragonfly is a small, passive, flying mob added by Critters and Companions. It lives over rivers, swamps and bayous, never attacks players or other mobs on its own, and can be tamed into a pet that follows its owner, fights for it, and can wear body armor. Players mostly encounter it as a harmless ambient creature, and they usually want it for its Dragonfly Wing drop or for the armored pet it can become.
Spawning
Dragonflies are added to the overworld spawn lists of 22 biomes, mostly river and swamp types, including the bayou biomes of Biomes O' Plenty and the swamp and fen biomes of other mods. Each spawn places a single dragonfly. The weight is 4 or 5 in most river and swamp biomes and 10 in lush biomes. The full list is in the table below.

Fear Nightfall weights bayou biomes at 6× in its biome distribution, so bayous cover far more of the land in this pack than in the stock setup, and dragonflies are a regular sight there.
Behavior
A wild dragonfly has 4 maximum health (2 hearts) and an attack damage of 2. It flies, and each tick its vertical velocity is reduced to 60% of its current value, so it hovers and drifts rather than climbing quickly. When idle, it picks a new random point about 14 blocks away horizontally and 4 blocks vertically, moving there roughly once every ten ticks on average. Wild dragonflies give river blocks a higher pathing value (10 instead of 5), so they tend to drift toward rivers.
A wild dragonfly does not target players. When it takes damage, it panics and flies to a random airborne point up to 16 blocks away. Jumping Spiders are its only natural threat: a dragonfly flees from any Jumping Spider within 8 blocks, at walking speed 1.0 or sprinting speed 1.2, unless the spider and the dragonfly belong to the same owner.
Dragonflies can be tamed. Taming adds 4 maximum health, so a tamed dragonfly has 8 health (4 hearts). A tamed dragonfly obeys the sit command, follows its owner when more than 6 blocks away and stops about 2 blocks away, and it attacks any mob that hurts its owner. Spider eyes are the dragonfly's food item. Breeding produces no offspring, and dragonflies cannot be leashed.
Body armor
A tamed dragonfly can wear one piece of body armor in the body slot. The owner right-clicks it with a dragonfly armor item while its slot is empty, and the item is consumed. Crouching with an empty hand while the dragonfly is armored returns the armor to the world as an item. The armor value follows the vanilla chestplate defense of its material, except netherite, which is hard-coded to 16. Frogs will not eat a dragonfly that is wearing armor, which lets an armored dragonfly survive near frogs.
Drops
Killing a dragonfly drops Dragonfly Wing (
Dragonfly Wing). The loot table rolls a uniform count from 0 to 2, with no looting modifier, so a kill can yield no wing at all. The wing stacks to 64. Jumping Spiders accept dragonfly wings as food.

Tips
Wild dragonflies flee when hit and have only 4 health, so there is little reason to chase one except for its wing. Tame one if you want a companion that stays near a base: the sit command keeps it in place. Put armor on a tamed dragonfly before you keep it near frogs. A tamed dragonfly flees any Jumping Spider that is not owned by the same player, so keep untamed spiders away from it.
