The Orchid Swamp is a humid overworld biome added by Terralith. It is a swamp variant with birch-based trees, hanging vines, and clusters of blue orchids, dandelions and cornflowers. In Fear Nightfall it is one of the rarest biomes in the pack, covering about 0.15% of the surface land. It has a mix of ordinary swamp animals and a large set of horror mobs from Born in Chaos, Graveyard and other pack mods, which makes it a dangerous place to stay out after dark.

Description

The biome has a flat, wet floor with dirt and grass ground and scattered water pools. Its colours are muted green and grey. The grass is tinted #5f9b76 and the foliage #5c8e47, while the water is #617b64 and the fog #a2aba8. The sky is a pale grey-green (#a1bcb1), and the water fog is a dark teal. The ambient mood sound is a cave sound, and the background music is the vanilla swamp track.

The trees are small birch trees with vines hanging from their leaves. Most of them are short, with a two-layer crown. About one in five tree placements instead uses a larger forked birch tree that grows only where the surface is water deep enough to pass the depth filter, so these trees stand in the shallows and over the ponds. Blue orchids are the most common flower, with dandelions and cornflowers also appearing. Dead bushes, lily pads, sugar cane, pumpkin patches, and red and brown mushrooms grow across the ground, and glow lichen appears on some surfaces. Seagrass also grows in the water.

Generation

Orchid Swamp uses a temperature of 0.8 and a downfall of 0.9, which makes it warm, wet and rainy. It is placed within the pack's custom biome table, where every biome allowed in a climate cell shares the space by weight. Because of its low weight, it covers about 0.15% of the surface land, which is far less than the other Terralith biomes in the table. It does not have a special horror weighting in the pack's changes: it is not on the list of biomes raised to 6× weight, though swamps as a group are one of the pack's main horror areas.

The biome's underground features include lava lakes, amethyst geodes, fossil and monster room dungeons, and spring water and spring lava features.

Features

The biome's terrain features are mostly ores and ground decorations. The standard overworld ore set appears here: coal, copper, iron, gold, redstone, lapis, diamond, and granite, diorite, andesite and tuff clusters. Gravel, dirt and clay disks also generate. Other mods add ore placements to the biome, including black argillite, infected deepslate diamond ore and infected diamond ore from Born in Chaos, mithril ore from Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks, sulfur ore from Butchery, and the selenite geode from Hexerei.

The biome has several plant features unique to it. Hexerei adds willow trees and swamp flowers, Farmer's Delight adds patches of wild carrots, onions and rice, and Supplementaries adds wild flax. Hexerei's flowering lily pads also appear in the water.

Caves in the biome can contain Supplementaries cave urns.

Mobs and structures

The biome's monster table is one of the most varied in the pack. Spiders, zombies, creepers, slimes and skeletons are the most common mobs, and a bogged skeleton, enderman and witch appear less often. The pack's horror mobs also spawn here, including the Nightmare, the Dread Hound, Spiders Mother, Krampus Henchman and the Mutant Zombie. Several of these are rare, with spawn weights between 1 and 8, so most nights will not produce them. Frogs, sheep, pigs, chickens, cows, box turtles and bats spawn as passive or ambient mobs.

Structures are the main draw of the biome. The table below lists them with their placement details and loot. Horror structures from the pack's changes include the Graveyard and Born in Chaos sets, the Sleepy Hollows set, and the Hexerei witch huts and covens. Where a horror structure shares its biome set with other structures, the pack gives it 6× weight.

Tips

  • Visit in daylight where possible. Most of the dangerous horror mobs are rare but hostile, and the biome's monster table is dominated by hostile mobs.
  • Bring a sword and a shield for close combat, and expect skeletons and bogged skeletons to shoot from range.
  • Carry torches or lanterns, since the tree canopy and vines block light from above.
  • Use the water edges carefully. Corpse Fish and Glutton Fish spawn in the ponds, and Glow Squid spawn in underground water.
