Infested Caves is an underground biome added by Terralith. It is one of the horror biomes of Fear Nightfall: its cave weight is raised to 6×, and it is one of the cave biomes that spreads into neighbouring cave areas. Players meet it deep below the surface, where the ground is made of stone, cobblestone and deepslate laced with infested blocks, and where spiders, slimes and undead gather in large numbers. It is the main source of cobwebs and infested stone in the pack's caves, and it is worth knowing before digging into a cave system that has no clear exit.
Description
The biome is entirely subterranean. Its ground is ordinary stone with veins of mossy cobblestone, infested cobblestone and cobbled deepslate, so the walls look like broken masonry rather than natural rock. Cobwebs hang from the ceilings in strands of one to five blocks, and small clusters of glow lichen grow on some surfaces. Caves can contain lava lakes, spring water and spring lava, and large amethyst geodes. Vines grow down from some ceilings.
The biome uses grey foliage (#bbbfc4), blue water (#3f76e4), a pale blue fog (#c0d8ff) and a light blue sky colour (#76a8ff). Because the cave is lit only by its own light sources, the grey-blue palette and the cobwebs give it a cold, dead look.
Generation
Infested Caves is a cave biome. It is chosen for the underground cave layer rather than for surface climate, and it is almost never found on the surface: its share of surface land is 0.04%. Its climate parameters are temperature 1 and downfall 0.3, with rain precipitation. At y = -30 it makes up 18.05% of the cave layer before the pack's changes.
In Fear Nightfall the biome has a horror weight of 6×, the same as Frostfire Caves and Spider Nest. Fear Nightfall also lets it spread into neighbouring cave areas, so it appears in more caves than the default Terralith settings would give it. The pack reduced the weight of lush caves to one third, so Infested Caves is one of the most common cave types underground. Horror caves now make up about 30% of the cave layer, up from 17–22% in the unmodified pack.
The biome shares its caves with many structures. Among them are graveyard crypts, a firewell from Born in Chaos, gallows, Nova Structures remnants and bunkers, and mineshafts. Structures in horror biomes are placed about 30% closer together in Fear Nightfall, so a single cave can hold several of them.
Features
The biome adds several features beyond the vanilla cave set:
- Cobble veins: up to 256 attempts per chunk, each placing a vein of up to 64 blocks. In stone the vein is infested cobblestone with a 35% chance of mossy cobblestone; in deepslate it is cobbled deepslate.
- Hanging cobwebs: up to 256 attempts per chunk, between 11 blocks above the bottom of the world and y = 192. Each cobweb column hangs one to five blocks from a ceiling.
- Dungeon extras: 12 extra monster rooms per chunk, from six blocks above the bottom of the world up to y = 128, in addition to the vanilla monster rooms.
- Ores: the full vanilla cave ore set (coal, iron, copper, gold, redstone, lapis and diamond, including the buried and large diamond veins), plus infested stone veins. Fear Nightfall adds infected diamond ore and deepslate variants from Born in Chaos, mithril from Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks, and sulfur and salt ores from Butchery.
- Liquids and terrain: spring water and spring lava, underwater magma, and gravel, sand and clay disks.
Mobs and structures
The most common monsters are spiders (weight 100), slimes (100), and creepers (50). Fear Nightfall's horror mobs are common here too, including slime golems (25), necromancers (18), reapers (10), the Dread Hound (7), Krampus (1), and several other Born in Chaos and Graveyard mobs. The rarest entries include the Lifestealer and Supreme Bonescaller. The full list with weights is in the table below.
Ambient mobs are coal golems (20) and bats (10). Underground water holds glow squids, and the lakes of the biome can hold Corpse Fish and Glutton Fish, plus several cave fish such as Cave Eel, Cave Crawler and Crystal Shrimp.

Tips
- Carry light. The passages are underground and dark, and the hostile mob weights are high, so mobs spawn often in unlit areas.
- Cobwebs slow movement and can trap you. Break them before walking through a hanging cluster.
- Expect many spiders. Spiders and cave spiders attack in groups, so fight in a narrow tunnel where only one can reach you.
- Mossy and infested cobblestone looks like ordinary stone. Check a wall for cracks or moss before assuming that a mined block is safe.
- Mark the way back out before you explore a graveyard crypt or a gallows structure, which are among the horror structures that can generate here.
- The underground lakes hold fish that are rare elsewhere. Carry a fishing rod if you want to catalogue them.
