The Mother Spider (in-game name Spiders Mother) is a hostile mob added by Born in Chaos. It has 90 health, summons Baby Spiders each time it is wounded, and leaves a brood of them behind when it dies. It spawns only in darkness in the Overworld, so players usually meet it while exploring dark areas at night. Its melee attacks also apply a Living Cocoon effect and poison.

Spawning

It is a natural monster that spawns in a wide range of Overworld biomes, excluding Deep Dark and Mushroom Fields. A spawn position must have no light at all (light level 0) and be in the Overworld. Each natural spawn is a single Mother Spider. The spawn weight and biome list are in the table below.

Spawning is controlled by the motherSpiderSpawn game rule, which is on by default. Turning it off stops natural spawns of this mob, while the spawn egg still works.

Fear Nightfall also halved the spawn weights of Born in Chaos monsters to reduce how many vanilla monsters they push out of the mob cap.

Behavior

The Mother Spider extends the vanilla spider class, so it climbs walls. Its movement speed is 0.3 and its follow range is 32 blocks.

Targeting. It attacks players only when the light level at its position is 9 or lower. It also attacks Iron Golems and three of this mod's insects (Corpse Fly, Bloody Gadfly and Maggot) on sight. It retaliates against anything that damages it.

Melee. Its melee attack has a reach of about 1.9 blocks and needs line of sight. It deals 6 attack damage and knocks its target back with a strength of 1.3. It has a knockback resistance of 1, which makes it immune to knockback itself.

Living Cocoon and poison. When it hits a mob, a player or an animal that is not blocking, the target receives a Living Cocoon effect, unless it already has one. The duration is 300 ticks (15 seconds) on Easy, Normal and Peaceful, and 400 ticks (20 seconds) on Hard. On Normal the target is also poisoned for 10 seconds at Poison I. On Hard it is poisoned for 20 seconds at Poison II. On Easy and Peaceful there is no poison. Shielding blocks these effects, because the target must not be blocking when it is hit.

Summoning Baby Spiders. Each time the Mother Spider takes damage while below its maximum health, it summons up to two Baby Spiders (Baby Spider). They appear two blocks to its west and east, provided those spots are air or snow. The summon happens before the damage is applied, so a hit at full health summons nothing. The summon also grants the Mother Spider Damage Resistance I for 4 seconds. Fall damage triggers the summon too, although the fall damage itself is then ignored.

Death. About 1.5 seconds after it dies, the Mother Spider releases 3 to 5 Baby Spiders at its position and fills some of the empty air blocks around it with Cobweb Cover blocks. The player who kills it is awarded the Arachnophobe's Nightmare advancement.

Drops

The Mother Spider drops Spider Mandibles, String and Spider Eyes from its loot table. Looting adds up to one extra Spider Mandible per level, counted up to Looting IV. The exact counts are in the table below.

The Baby Spider (Baby Spider) is the hostile spider the Mother Spider summons. It is a Monster with 10 health and 2 attack damage. Its natural spawns come in groups of 3 to 5. A Controlled Baby Spider variant also exists. It is a passive, tameable Baby Spider, and it is spawned by structures, events and summoning rather than naturally.

Tips

• Keep the area you are fighting in lit above light level 9. The Mother Spider only picks players as targets in dim light, so light that is bright enough keeps it from targeting you.
• Each hit below full health summons more Baby Spiders, and ranged hits trigger the summon too. A burst of damage that takes it down in a few hits leaves it with fewer summons than many small hits.
• A shield prevents the Living Cocoon and poison, because the attack effects are skipped on a target that is blocking. Blocking the melee attack is the simplest way to avoid the cocoon.
• Plan for the death brood. Expect 3 to 5 Baby Spiders and cobwebs around the corpse, and keep the path back open.
• On Hard, the cocoon lasts longer and the poison is stronger, so it is worth fighting with healing or a retreat planned.
