The Hot Springs is a rare, rainy, cold-climate overworld biome added by Biomes O' Plenty. The name suggests heat, but the biome's temperature is 0.17, which is cold, and Tough As Nails lists it in its cold biome tag. Its identity comes from its water: lakes and springs of water, thermal calcite vents on the lake floor, and lava springs mixed in with the water. Hot Springs makes up only 0.03% of the land surface in Fear Nightfall, so players usually need a biome finder such as Nature's Compass to locate one.

Description

Hot Springs has a single variant. Its colours are a pale sage grass (#80b497), a darker green foliage (#60a17b), bright cyan water (#43d5ee), a pale blue fog (#c0d8ff) and a blue sky (#7ea2ff). The biome has rain rather than snow, but snow settles on exposed blocks in its cold climate.

The ground is patched with disks of gravel, calcite, basalt, packed mud and Thermal Calcite, so the surface is less uniform than in most grassland biomes. Grass patches, ferns, large ferns, bushes, thin bamboo and glow lichen cover the open ground. Biomes O' Plenty pine trees are placed only where no water lies over the ground, so trees grow on dry land and not in the pools.

Water is the main feature. Lakes and springs break up the terrain, and the thermal calcite vents described in the Features section sit in some of the pools.

Generation

Hot Springs generates in a climate with a temperature of 0.17 and a downfall of 0.5. It is a cold biome, so Tough As Nails treats it as cold. Its cave share at y = -30 is 0.00%, so the biome is effectively surface-only.

In Fear Nightfall the biome makes up 0.03% of the land surface. It is rare, and it is not among the horror biomes that the pack weights 6×. Its rarity comes from its climate niche, not from a Fear Nightfall weighting.

Up to 191 structures can generate in Hot Springs. Notable examples include Born in Chaos structures such as the Firewell, Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks' Catacombs and ice spider den, Graveyard's large graveyard and dead trees, and village-style houses and ruins from Moog's Voyager Structures. The full list is in the structure table below.

Features

  • Water lakes: Biomes O' Plenty lakes of water. They are placed in about half of all chunks. Vanilla lava lakes also generate here, both underground and at the surface, so some pools hold lava.
  • Springs: Vanilla water and lava springs appear in the biome.
  • Thermal calcite vents: Each chunk tries up to 96 random positions near a chosen spot. Any water block above Thermal Calcite is turned into a thermal calcite vent. Walking onto a vent hurts a living, non-fire-immune creature for 1.0 damage (half a heart) with the fumarole damage type. Fire-immune creatures take no damage.
  • Surface disks: Patches of gravel, calcite, basalt, packed mud and thermal calcite cover the ground.
  • Ores: The biome uses the standard overworld ore set, including coal, iron, copper, gold, redstone, lapis and diamond, with the usual deepslate variants. Underwater magma is also placed here.
  • Other vanilla features: Amethyst geodes and monster rooms can appear underground.

Mobs and structures

Hot Springs has a long list of hostile mobs. The most common are the vanilla spider, skeleton, creeper, slime and zombie, each with a spawn weight of 95 or 100. Horror mobs make up much of the rest of the list. Ghoul and Revenant each have a weight of 25, Necromancer has 18, and Dread Hound has 7. The rarest entries include Spirit of Chaos, Krampus, Nightmare Stalker and Bloody Gadfly, each with a weight of 7 or less. Passive mobs are few: foxes and bats. Water mobs include Corpse Fish and many Biomes O' Plenty fish species.

Tips

  • Stepping on a thermal calcite vent costs half a heart, so avoid walking over the thermal calcite patches on the shore and under the water.
  • The biome is cold and rainy. If Tough As Nails is installed, its temperature mechanics apply here.
  • The mob list is dense with horror entries, so bring light and a sword into the biome at night. Spiders, skeletons, creepers, slimes and zombies are the most frequent hostiles, but the rarer horror mobs are the ones most likely to catch a player off guard.
