The Ominous Woods is an overworld biome added by Biomes O' Plenty. It is a temperate forest with purple-tinted foliage and a pale lavender fog. In Fear Nightfall it is one of the pack's horror biomes: it is weighted six times higher than the default during biome selection, and it holds a large share of the pack's hostile mobs and dungeon-style structures. Players who explore the forest at night meet a dense mix of spiders, slimes, illusioners and witches.

Description

The Ominous Woods is a forested biome with grass tinted a dull violet-grey (grass colour #4c4a70) and foliage tinted a deeper purple (#6b487c). The sky is a muted blue-grey (#84a1cc) and the fog is a pale lavender-grey (#7881a5). Water in the biome is a very dark purple, and the water fog is close and nearly black.

The surface is mostly grass and dirt with patches of dead grass and short grass. The main trees are the Umbran trees of the Umbran Wood set. The tree feature picks one of four shapes at each placement: a tall Umbran tree in 70% of cases, a dying tree in 15%, a dead twiglet tree in 5%, and a standard Umbran tree in the remaining 10%. Wither roses are placed by a flower feature with 96 placement attempts, spread up to 7 blocks horizontally and 3 blocks vertically from a chosen point, and only fill empty air spaces. Glow lichen and red and brown mushrooms also appear on the surface.

Underground the biome is rocky. Ore veins of every vanilla overworld type generate, including diamond, lapis and copper. Lava lakes appear deep underground, and springs of water and lava can break out of cave walls. The biome also adds monster rooms (dungeons) and amethyst geodes below the surface.

The ambient cave sound plays every 6000 ticks (five minutes) when the player is near a suitable block, giving the biome its unsettling mood.

Generation

The Ominous Woods generates in the temperate, humid part of the overworld climate, with a temperature of 0.6 and a downfall of 0.6. It has rain rather than snow. In Fear Nightfall it covers about 2.96% of the land surface and about 0.37% of the cave layer at y = -30. Its cave share is low.

The pack's biome distribution table gives the Ominous Woods six times the default weight. Horror biomes make up about 11.9% of land in Fear Nightfall, up from 4.5% before the pack's changes. The Ominous Woods is in the temperate-to-cool humid forest group, where horror biomes make up about a quarter of the land. Other six-times-weighted horror biomes include Dead Forest, Sleepy Hollows and Spider Nest.

Horror structures are placed about 30% closer together than default, and where they share a structure set with other structures they receive six times the weight. Because of this, the Ominous Woods contains a large number of the pack's horror structures; the structure table below lists them.

Features

The biome's distinctive features are:

  • Umbran trees from the Umbran Wood set, in the four shapes described above.
  • Wither roses, placed in clusters on the surface. Standing in a wither rose applies the wither effect, so keep clear of them.
  • Dead grass and short grass patches, along with pumpkin patches from the vanilla set.
  • Monster rooms and deep monster rooms underground, which can hold skeletons, zombies and spiders.
  • Lava lakes and lava springs underground.
  • Amethyst geodes and the normal overworld ore set. Diamond and lapis are present in the usual vertical ranges, with buried variants, so mining is productive here.
  • Underwater magma and glow squids in underground water.

No special blocks are unique to this biome. The Umbran wood and the wither roses are the most visible features, and most of the biome's identity comes from its colour and its mobs.

Mobs and structures

The Ominous Woods has one of the densest hostile spawn tables in the pack. The most common monsters are spiders and slimes (both with the highest spawn weight), followed by illusioners, endermen and witches. Monsters from the Graveyard mod (ghouls, revenants, reapers), Iron's Spellbooks (necromancers) and Born in Chaos (including the Dread Hound) also spawn here. Ambient bats and a small number of wolves also spawn on the surface, and glow squids spawn underground.

The structure table below lists the structures that can generate here. Notable entries include the Catacombs and Evoker Fort from Iron's Spellbooks, Illager Manors and Illager Camps from Nova Structures, Graveyard dead trees, and the woodland mansion, which the Biomes O' Plenty biome tags allow in this biome.

Tips

  • Visit in daylight first. Most of the spawn weight is hostile, and the spider and slime counts rise sharply after dark.
  • Wither roses hurt when touched. Route around them on the surface and mine carefully near them.
  • Lava lakes and lava springs appear underground. Carry water and blocks to cover lava, and keep a light source on hand.
  • Umbran wood is useful for building, and the trees are plentiful in the biome.
  • Illusioners are common here (weight 50). Fight them from a narrow position such as a tree line or cave entrance rather than in the open.
  • For the broader context of horror content in the pack, see Horror and Spooky Content.
