Graveyard Ruins are surface structures added by The Graveyard. Each ruin is a small, weathered site with chests of loot and a set of hostile mobs placed around it. Ruins matter for two reasons: their chests are a steady source of general loot, and each of the three ruin variants holds one of the three bone staff fragments (upper, middle and lower) that form part of the mod's mid-game progression.

Generation

Ruins generate in the overworld as surface structures. Their biome list is the tag #graveyard:has_structure/ruins, which covers 68 biomes. Most of them are forested, such as Forest, Dark Forest, Birch Taiga and Old Growth Spruce Taiga, with jungle, swamp, plains and shrubland biomes also on the list. The full list is in the structure table below.

Placement uses random spread with a spacing of 11 chunks and a separation of 8 chunks, as shown in the infobox. These are the in-game values, already scaled by the pack's sparse structure setting. In the pack's test world, ruins averaged about 15 per 26 km². Ruins sit on the surface heightmap rather than being buried, so they are visible from the ground in the biomes where they appear.

Ruins belong to the Graveyard group of horror structures. The pack places these structures closer together than vanilla, and where they share a structure set with other structures they get six times the weight. The spacing figures above already reflect this.

The ruins.generate option in the Graveyard common config is on by default. Setting it to false stops ruins from generating in new chunks.

Layout

Each ruin is a single piece chosen from three templates. The three templates have equal weight, so each generated ruin is one of the three variants with the same chance. The mod's README describes the three types as a broken tower, a bloody hill and a campsite, and says that each carries one unique bone staff fragment. Per the README, the broken tower holds the head fragment, the bloody hill the middle fragment, and the campsite the lower fragment.

The footprint of a ruin is about 46 by 45 by 47 blocks. The templates contain no placed mobs.

Inhabitants

Ruins do not place mobs when they generate. Instead, each ruin overrides the monster spawns inside its bounding box, so hostile spawns there are drawn from three types only:

Weights are relative to each other. Spawning inside a ruin still follows the usual monster spawn rules for light level and time, so most hostile spawns in a ruin happen at night or in dark interiors. The three mobs also spawn naturally in overworld biomes outside ruins, and the mob pages list those biomes.

A Skeleton Creeper is a creeper variant that explodes through a custom explosion routine. A Revenant is neutral until angered. A Ghoul is also neutral until angered, and it burns in sunlight by default.

Ruins place no bosses.

Loot

The chests in ruins draw from four loot tables: small, medium, flesh and bone. Every table includes cobwebs with a 100% roll, so nearly every ruin chest contains cobwebs. The medium table holds the most valuable rolls, including enchanted books, golden apples, blocks of gold and iron boots. The bone table is the source of skeleton skulls and the flesh table of zombie heads, the two head drops in the ruin loot. The generated tables below give the exact chances.

Tips

Ruins are on the surface, so the easiest way to find them is to explore forests and taigas on foot and watch for the structure's outline in the terrain. Because ghouls burn in direct sunlight by default, a daytime visit to a ruin with open sky above it can thin out its ghouls.

Skeleton Creepers explode, so keep a distance from them and fight them at range. Revenants and Ghouls stay neutral until you attack them, so leave them alone while you move through a ruin unless you are ready to fight the whole group.

Each ruin variant has its own bone staff fragment, and the variant is chosen at random. To collect all three fragments, you may have to check several ruins. The fragments are part of the mid-game progression, which is covered in Corruption, Vial of Blood and Summoning the Lich.
