The Golden Boreal Taiga is a taiga biome added by Regions Unexplored. Its trees are mostly golden larch, and its foliage is an olive gold. In Fear Nightfall only the Old Growth Golden Boreal Taiga generates. The original Golden Boreal Taiga is registered as a removed biome and is not placed in ordinary terrain. The biome is rare, and its monster spawn list is heavy with horror mobs from Born in Chaos, Graveyard and other horror mods, so it is dangerous after dark.

Description

Old Growth Golden Boreal Taiga

The Old Growth Golden Boreal Taiga is a dense forest of tall golden larch trees. The grass is yellow-green (#9EB35F) and the foliage is dull gold (#BFB050). The fog is pale blue and the water is blue. The biome plays the old growth taiga music and the cave ambience sound.

Most of the trees are golden larches with golden larch leaves. Fallen larch logs lie across the ground, and most of the shrubs are golden larch bushes. Patches of azure daisies and short grass break up the open ground.

Golden Boreal Taiga (removed)

The removed Golden Boreal Taiga is registered with the same generation settings and colours as the Old Growth variant. It is hidden from the world-creation biome list and is not placed by the default biome settings. Its ID is still referenced by some vanilla structure tags, so it can appear in those structures only where those tags allow it.

Generation

The Old Growth Golden Boreal Taiga is one of the four members of the boreal taiga group, which Regions Unexplored uses to split the vanilla taiga biomes by climate. Within that group it replaces Old Growth Pine Taiga wherever its climate range matches. It has a temperature of 0.45 and a downfall of 0.3, and it rains rather than snows.

In Fear Nightfall it covers about 0.20% of the surface land in the pack's sample. In the cave layer at y = -30 it covers about 0.01%.

The pack's horror weighting does not give this biome the 6× weight that applies to biomes such as Ashen Woodland or Blackwood Taiga. The structures listed for it do include horror sets from Born in Chaos, Graveyard and Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks, and the pack places horror structures about 30% closer together than the defaults.

Features

Trees are the main feature. The tree group for this biome is weighted toward golden larch:

  • A large golden larch is the most common tree (weight 7 of 17).
  • A standard golden larch is next (weight 3 of 17).
  • A golden larch pine is the third golden form (weight 2 of 17).
  • The remaining weight goes to standard and large larch trees, an aspen-shaped birch, and an oak bush.

Larch trunks use the Larch Wood set. Fallen larch logs are placed on the ground, and larch branches are placed on the trees.

The shrub group weights golden larch bushes three times as heavily as larch bushes, so the undergrowth is mostly golden.

Other features shared with the taiga family include:

  • Azure daisy and short grass patches.
  • Sugar cane, berry bushes, large ferns and pumpkin patches from vanilla.
  • Wild flax and cave urns from Supplementaries.
  • Wild carrots and onions from Farmer's Delight.
  • Ores from vanilla, plus the sulfur, salt disc and infected diamond features from Butchery and Born in Chaos. The biome also contains mithril ore from Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks.

Mobs and structures

The spawn tables below are generated from the biome's data. The most common hostile mobs are the 100-weight Spider, Skeleton, Creeper and Slime, followed by the 95-weight Zombie. The horror mobs with the largest weights are Ghoul and Revenant (25 each), Slime Golem (25), Necromancer (18) and Dread Hound (7). Krampus appears with a weight of 1.

The structures include both pack horror sets and general village and ruin sets. The horror structures listed for the biome include dead trees, haunted houses and catacombs.

Tips

  • Monster spawns are common at night here. The 100-weight mobs and the horror mobs above can all appear in the same stretch of forest.
  • Larch wood is the main wood source here. Fallen logs and larch trees are common, so Larch Wood is easy to collect.
  • The removed Golden Boreal Taiga is not placed in ordinary terrain. Expect the Old Growth variant wherever the golden larch forest appears.
  • The water holds fish such as bluegill and perch, and glow squid live in underground water.
