The Pumpkin Dunce is a hostile mob added by Born in Chaos. It is a fire-immune melee monster with 20 health (10 hearts) that naturally spawns only during the pack's Halloween window, and it bursts when it dies. It is one of the mod's pumpkin-themed mobs, alongside Pumpkin Spirit and Pumpkinhead.

Spawning

Pumpkin Dunces are natural monster spawns, but the mod gates them behind the calendar. A spawn attempt succeeds only when all of the following are true:

• The server's system date is between October 25 and November 7, or the halloweenEvent game rule is set to true. The seasonalEvents game rule and the spawn game rule for this mob must both be on; both are on by default. This is the same window as the Halloween event.
• The spot is in the Overworld or in a Terralith biome, and it is not in a Deep Dark or Mushroom Fields biome.
• Light is low. Under open sky the maximum light level at the spawn position must be 4 or less. Under cover, it must be 0.

Natural spawns come in groups of 3, and the spawn table below lists the biomes where they can appear. The pack's spawn changes add these mobs to the global monster pool, so they compete for the monster cap in those biomes with other hostile mobs.

Behavior

The Pumpkin Dunce is a standard hostile melee mob:

• Targeting: it attacks the nearest player it can see, and it also turns on any attacker that hurts it.
• Movement: it walks at a speed of 0.26 and wanders when it has no target. It floats in water and climbs single-block steps (step height 0.6 blocks).
• Attack: a melee attack that deals 3 damage (1.5 hearts) per hit, with 0.5 knockback.
• Defense: it has no armor and a knockback resistance of 0.3. It takes no damage from fire, falling, or explosions.

Its three visual variants are chosen when it spawns. The default texture is used 42.25% of the time, the "ww" variant 35% of the time, and the "hh" variant 22.75% of the time. The variants change only its appearance, not its health, damage or drops.

Death burst

When a Pumpkin Dunce dies, it stays in place for 20 ticks (one second) and then disappears with a burst:

• Players within a 2.5-block radius of its death position take 3 damage from an explosion.
• Each of those players gains the Infernal Flame effect for 80 ticks (4 seconds) at level I.
• The mob drops 5 experience points.

Players farther away are not affected.

Drops

Pumpkin Dunces drop from two loot pools, each rolled once per death:

• Candy pool: one of seven candies, each with equal weight: Holiday Candy, Mint Candy, Mint Ice Cream, Caramel Pepper, Gummy Vampire Teeth, Chocolate Heart and Coffee Candy. The count is rolled between 0 and 1, so the pool can drop nothing.
• Ember pool: a Smoldering Infernal Ember, with a count rolled between 0 and 2.

Tips

• Keep your distance when the Dunce dies. The burst reaches 2.5 blocks, and the Infernal Flame effect lasts four seconds after the hit.
• Expect groups of three at night, and fight them with your back to a wall so that fewer of them can reach you at once.
• Because the mob spawns naturally only in the Halloween window, set the halloweenEvent game rule to true if you want to farm its drops outside those dates.
