Born in Chaos Materials are the crafting components, decorative blocks and miscellaneous items added by Born in Chaos. They include the bones and dusts used in many of the mod's recipes, the Seed of Chaos and Monster Skin that feed its armour and weapons, and a small group of consumables such as the Death Totem and the Dark Atrium. Most are obtained from mob drops and dark structure chests rather than from crafting, and many are used as ingredients in the mod's other item pages, including Born in Chaos Melee Weapons, Born in Chaos Staffs and Ranged Weapons, Born in Chaos Armor and Hats and Born in Chaos Food.

Obtaining
Materials come from three routes: crafting, chest loot and mob drops. The crafting recipes that produce them are few. Shattered Skull and Pile of Skulls convert into each other, Bone Handle, Bone Heart, Spiritual Dust, Transformative Flower, Evilometer, Death Totem and Dark Atrium are crafted, and the rest are drop-only or chest-only.
Crafting
Four Shattered Skulls craft into one Pile of Skulls block, and a Pile of Skulls crafts back into four Shattered Skulls. Bundle of Bones is crafted from eight Bone and String, and it crafts back into eight Bone. Gnawed Bones has no crafting recipe and is obtained only from drops.
Loot and drops
Dark structures are the main source of materials. The Dark Tower variants (forest, plains and taiga) supply most of the chest loot for Shattered Skull, Seed of Chaos, Monster Skin, Dark Rod and Death Totem. Firewell chests are the best source of Fire Light Dust. The Clown Caravan chests add Monster Skin, and the Observation Tower chests add Shattered Skull and Monster Skin at low rates. Krampus drops Permafrost Shard and Birch Branches. Dire Hound Leader drops Monster Skin and Gnawed Bones. Pumpkin mobs, Pumpkinhead and Lord Pumpkinhead in particular, drop Smoldering Infernal Ember in large amounts. The per-chest chances and drop counts are shown in the table below.
15 chest sources, 51 mob drops
Usage
Most materials exist as ingredients. Bone Handle is a common weapon component, and Permafrost Shard is one of the ingredients of the Stormcaller's Horn, alongside Krampus Horn. Bone Meal is produced from Shattered Skull and Fused Bone, and Ethereal Spirit is the binding ingredient for the mod's charms and Soul Sand recipe.
Crafting ingredient
The table below lists every recipe that uses these materials. Monster Skin is the most widely used, going into Dark Metal Armor Plate and the Nightmare Mask. Seed of Chaos is required for the Dark Ritual Dagger, the Death Totem, the Transformative Flower and the Spirit Divider. Fire Light Dust is used to make Scorched Log, Fire Charge and the Intoxicating and Stimulating bombs.

Death Totem
The Death Totem is a non-stacking item that is placed in the offhand slot. When lethal damage would occur, it cancels the death and sets health to 3. It also temporarily grants the Strength effect, and in exchange costs the player's satiety. Its tooltip notes that it no longer removes the entire hunger bar when triggered. The Death Totem is crafted from a Shattered Skull, two Scorched Logs, an Ethereal Spirit and a Seed of Chaos, and it is also a rare chest drop from Dark Tower chests.
A full set of Nightmare Armor is said to add an additional effect while the Death Totem is held. The tooltip does not name the effect, so the exact bonus is not documented here.
Dark Atrium and Bone Heart
The Dark Atrium is a rare item that grants the Dark Ward effect for 60 minutes when used. Dark Ward cancels a lethal hit and sets health to 10. It is crafted from two Lifestealer Bones and a Bone Heart.
The Bone Heart is crafted from five Bone and a Fused Bone. When used it grants the Bone Barrier effect for 50 minutes, which blocks one hit. Its only use as an ingredient is the Dark Atrium recipe.
Dark Ward, the Death Totem and the Living Cocoon effect all cancel or redirect death. Other mods that cancel death, such as totem or revive mods, will compete with them.
Fire Light Dust and Smoldering Infernal Ember
Both items are furnace fuel. Fire Light Dust burns for 3500 ticks and Smoldering Infernal Ember burns for 3000 ticks, which is about 17.5 and 15 smelting operations respectively. They are the only furnace fuels that the mod adds, and vanilla fuel values are unchanged. Fire Light Dust is fire resistant and is also used to make Scorched Log, which is the mod's wood for Scorched Wood.
Spiritual Dust and Evilometer
Spiritual Dust is crafted from one Ethereal Spirit and three Bone Meal into six dust. It increases the power of shots fired from the Staff of Magic Arrows, and it is used in the Spiritual Gingerbread and the Evilometer.
The Evilometer is an unstackable item that displays the player's naughtiness score. At a critically high value it grants the Strength effect. This feature depends on the naughtiness system, which this pack disables (see below), so the readout and the Strength effect do not work in Fear Nightfall.
Bottle of Magical Energy
The Bottle of Magical Energy removes the Magic Depletion effect when consumed. It stacks to 16.
Birch Branches
Birch Branches are a sword with 300 durability, 3 attack damage and an attack speed of 1.6. Its tooltip says that it deals more damage to "naughty players". That bonus depends on the naughtiness system, which this pack disables, so it is not active in Fear Nightfall.
Decorative blocks
Pile of Skulls has a hardness of 3 and a blast resistance of 5. Bundle of Bones has a hardness of 2 and a blast resistance of 4, and Gnawed Bones has a hardness of 0.9 and a blast resistance of 5. Dark Ice is a hard block with a hardness of 4 and a blast resistance of 10. All of them can be mined with any tool.
Marigolds
Marigolds are a flower that generates in eight forest and plains-family biomes, at a rate of 1 in 32 tries during vegetal decoration. They can be crafted into Orange Dye. They are also a Spirit Guide drop and are tagged as small flowers, flower box plantables and animal foods.
Chaos Component
The Chaos Component is used in one recipe, the Transmuting Elixir. The mod data does not record a crafting recipe or a drop source for it, so none is described here.

Fear Nightfall
Naughtiness is disabled
The pack switches off the naughtiness system. Born in Chaos normally raises a hidden score when a player kills villagers or animals, and at high values it summons Krampus and applies punishments. Fear Nightfall disables the naughtinessMechanics gamerule on every datapack load, so the score does not change and the Krampus punishment does not occur. The Evilometer readout, the Evilometer's Strength effect and the Birch Branches bonus against naughty players therefore have no effect in this pack. See Naughtiness and Krampus for the full mechanic.
Structures and horror placement
Dark Tower and Firewell are horror structures, and the pack places them about 30% closer together, with 6× weight where they share a structure set with other structures. More of these structures therefore generate than in unmodified Born in Chaos, which makes their chests the main source of materials in this pack. Night exploration around these structures is dangerous, and Dread Hound packs are common in the overworld.
Tips
- Start with Shattered Skull and Pile of Skulls. The pile recipe lets you store four skulls in one slot.
- Dark Tower chests are the most useful source for Seed of Chaos and Monster Skin. Check several chests per tower, because the chances are low per chest.
- Fire Light Dust is a long-lasting furnace fuel, burning for about 17.5 smelting operations per item.
- Carry a Death Totem in the offhand slot before exploring Dark Towers at night, because it cancels a lethal hit once it is triggered.
