Black Argillite is a dark stone block added by Born in Chaos. It generates underground in the overworld and is the base material of a large family of building blocks: bricks, stairs, slabs, walls, columns, buttons, pressure plates and carved variants. A parallel set of "Cursed" blocks uses the same shapes, with a hardness of 25 and a mining penalty that is applied to the player.
Obtaining
Black Argillite is a vein ore. It is placed in the overworld at 3 veins per chunk, between Y -17 and Y 17. Each vein is up to 27 blocks in size, and it replaces stone, granite, diorite and andesite. Mining it requires a pickaxe. For the other ores added by the mod, see Ores and Mining.
Crafting
The crafting recipe for Black Argillite is shown in the grid below. Its fired form is made by smelting, and the brick and stone-cut variants are made from fired blocks.

Black Argillite is smelted in a furnace into Fired Black Argillite. The process takes 200 ticks (10 seconds) and gives 1.0 experience.
Usage
Black Argillite is a hardness 4 block with a blast resistance of 17. Its brick form, Black Argillite Brick, has a blast resistance of 40, so the brick variants are more resistant to explosions than the plain block. All the non-cursed variants are mined with a pickaxe. The mod adds the Black Argillite stairs, slabs, walls and buttons to the vanilla stair, slab, wall, button and pressure plate tags, so recipes that accept those tags also accept them.
Fired Black Argillite and bricks
Fired Black Argillite has the same hardness as the plain block but a blast resistance of 40. It is the usual input for the brick family: it can be crafted into Black Argillite Brick, or stone-cut into Black Argillite Brick, Cracked Black Argillite Brick, Black Argillite Brick Wall, Black Argillite Brick Stairs, Black Argillite Brick Slab and Black Argillite Column or Carved Black Argillite. The brick variants include mossy and stained bricks, which are made by combining Black Argillite Brick with a Moss Block or with Beetroot.
Each variant's recipe is listed in the table below.

Argillite Lamp
The Argillite Lamp is a light source made from Fired Black Argillite, glass panes and glowstone dust. It has a light level of 15, which is the maximum, and a hardness of 0.6. It can be mined with any tool.
Cursed variants
The Cursed family is a copy of most of the Black Argillite blocks, with the suffix _n in the internal names. Each Cursed block has a hardness of 25 and a blast resistance of 1000. Mining a Cursed block requires an iron pickaxe or better. The Cursed blocks are the only ones in the family that apply an effect to the player:
- Starting to mine a Cursed block with a pickaxe in survival mode gives the player Mining Fatigue III for 1000 ticks (50 seconds). This effect is applied only if the player does not already have Mining Fatigue III.
- Breaking a Cursed block in survival mode gives the player Mining Fatigue III for 1600 ticks (80 seconds). This effect is applied each time a block is broken.
Both effects play the elder guardian curse sound. The base Cursed Black Argillite block also blocks all light. No recipe for a Cursed variant appears in the data, and the mod's profile does not describe how they are obtained.
Items
- The base block and its bricks are the main building materials in the family.
- The Cursed family uses the same shapes as the base family but has the hardness and mining penalties described above.
- Cursed Fired Black Argillite and the other Cursed bricks follow the same pattern.
