The Pumpkin Spirit is a hostile mob added by Born in Chaos. It has 66 health (33 hearts), 12 armour and 13 attack damage. A player can create one by building a column of hay bale and carved pumpkin topped with an
Ethereal Spirit, and it drops an Ethereal Spirit when killed.
It is classified in the Monster category, but it does not spawn naturally. Players meet it in Farm structures or by summoning one, and it stays in place once it exists: it never despawns, and it is not removed when a player moves away.
Spawning
It has no natural biome spawn entries. Pumpkin Spirits appear in these ways:
- Farm structures: the mod places the Pumpkin Spirit in the Farm structure, as shown in the table below.
- Summoning: a player can build a summoning column and create one (see below).
- Spawn egg: the
Pumpkin Spirit Spawn Egg creates one. The egg stacks to 64.
Does not spawn naturally in any biome (see Obtaining/Spawning text).
Summoning
A Pumpkin Spirit is summoned with an Ethereal Spirit held in the main hand. The player right-clicks a block with the following stack, from top to bottom:
- A carved pumpkin block. Any of these counts: carved pumpkin, jack o'lantern, evil carved pumpkin or flaming evil pumpkin.
- A hay bale directly below it.
- Two dark oak blocks below that, either logs or wood (stripped variants also count).
- A solid block below the dark oak column.
When the stack is complete, the game destroys the four blocks, consumes the Ethereal Spirit, and spawns a Pumpkin Spirit at the lowest of the dark oak positions. The player receives the Scarecrow advancement ("Create your own Pumpkin Spirit") for the first summon.
Behavior
The Pumpkin Spirit is a melee mob with a fixed set of goals. The attack damage, health and armour values are given in the infobox.
- Movement: it walks at a speed of 0.22, wanders randomly and avoids water. It has a follow range of 16 blocks and a knockback resistance of 0.9, so it is hard to push back.
- Melee: it attacks at a speed of 1.1 when a target is within 2 blocks and in line of sight. Its attack knockback is 2.
- Targeting: it attacks the nearest mob in the Monster category. It does not target players on its own. It attacks whatever last damaged it, so hitting one provokes it.
- Immunities: it takes no damage from cactus or drowning.
- Fire: if the Pumpkin Spirit catches fire, it is replaced by a Seared Spirit at the same position and facing. The Pumpkin Spirit is removed, and the game plays a thunder sound and spawns lava particles. A burning Pumpkin Spirit therefore does not survive as itself.
- Experience: it drops 6 experience points when killed.
Feeding and breeding
The Pumpkin Spirit cannot be bred. Its food list is empty, so no item starts breeding. Right-clicking it with a hay bale in the main hand does not feed it but heals it: the hay bale is consumed, and the Pumpkin Spirit receives the Instant Health effect. The hay bale has a 1-second cooldown after each use.
Drops
The Pumpkin Spirit has four loot pools. Each pool rolls once, so the hay bale and the Ethereal Spirit are always dropped. The stick and carved pumpkin counts vary, and the table below gives their ranges.
| Item | Amount | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
Hay Bale | x1.0-1.0 | |
Ethereal Spirit | x1.0-1.0 | |
Stick | x0.0-3.0 | |
Carved Pumpkin | x0.0-1.0 |
The Ethereal Spirit is the most useful drop, because it is needed for summoning and for the mod's Charms.
Tips
- Its melee range is 2 blocks, so standing further away keeps you out of its attacks. Its knockback resistance of 0.9 means knockback will not push it back far.
- Do not set it on fire. A burning Pumpkin Spirit becomes a Seared Spirit, which is a separate and more dangerous mob.
- To keep a Pumpkin Spirit alive, carry hay bales. Healing it costs one hay bale per use, and the cooldown means you cannot heal it faster than once per second.
- Pumpkin Spirits do not despawn. A Farm or summoned Pumpkin Spirit stays until it is killed, so mark the area before building around one.
