The Maggot and Corpse Fly are two hostile insects added by Born in Chaos. The Corpse Maggot is a small, slow pest that is summoned when zombie-type mobs and some other Born in Chaos mobs die, and when a player breaks rotten soil. The Corpse Fly is a taller, faster flying mob that roams the Overworld in low light. Both are weak in melee but common, so a player who fights undead mobs or farms rotten soil will meet them regularly. The Corpse Maggot can also be cooked into food.

Spawning

The Corpse Fly spawns naturally. It spawns only in the Overworld, in biomes tagged as overworld, in Terralith biomes and in the Forlorn Hollows biome from Alex's Caves. It never spawns in deep dark or mushroom fields biomes. Its spawn tile depends on light: where the sky is visible above, the raw light level must be 4 or lower, and where the spawn tile is covered, it must be fully dark (level 0). Natural spawns come in groups of 1–3, and the biomes and weights are listed in the table below. A gamerule that switches Corpse Fly spawns off is on by default.

The Corpse Maggot has no natural spawns. It appears only when the following mobs or events summon it:

• Zombie-type deaths: a Zombie, zombie villager, zombie horse, husk, or a drowned that dies out of water has a 15% chance to summon a Corpse Maggot when it dies. This requires the maggotsAppearance gamerule, which is on by default.
• Other Born in Chaos deaths: the Swarmer, Barrel Zombie, Door Knight, Zombie Bruiser, Zombie Clown and Zombie Fisherman each summon Corpse Maggots when they die, with the chances set in each mob's death logic.
• Rotten soil: when a player in survival mode breaks rotten soil, there is a 25% chance that a Corpse Maggot spawns at the broken block.

Fear Nightfall limits Born in Chaos spawns to the Overworld, so they no longer appear in the Nether or the End, where they had made up almost all End spawns. Their spawn weights were also halved, so that Born in Chaos mobs take about 26% of the mob cap, leaving more room for vanilla monsters.

Behavior

Corpse Maggot

The Corpse Maggot is a slow mob. It pursues the nearest player and attacks at 80% of its movement speed, the speed the table below lists. When hurt by another mob or a player, it targets its attacker. Otherwise it wanders at random. It takes no damage from falls.

When it spawns, the Corpse Maggot gains one second of Resistance VI and the mod's Block Break effect.

Corpse Fly

The Corpse Fly flies with slow falling III. The effect is reapplied every tick, so the fly descends slowly and takes no fall damage or cactus damage. It attacks at 110% of its movement speed, the speed the table below lists. It targets players and Decaying Zombies, and it does not target other mobs.

The Corpse Fly avoids spiders and cave spiders. When one of them is within 12 blocks, the fly walks away from it and speeds up while fleeing. A spider nearby is therefore a practical way to push a group of flies away.

Drops

The Corpse Maggot drops the Corpse Maggot item, from 0 to 1 per kill. The Corpse Fly drops 0 to 2 Corpse Maggots. The Bloody Gadfly and the Swarmer also drop Corpse Maggots, in larger amounts. The table below lists the loot. Corpse Maggot items can be cooked into Fried Maggot, as described under Related items.

Variants

The page covers two separate mobs, each with its own spawn egg. The Corpse Maggot is the smaller and slower of the two, with less health and less experience. The Corpse Fly is larger, faster and tougher, and it gives more experience. Compare their stats in the table below.

Related items

The Corpse Maggot item is a food with 1 hunger point and 2 saturation. It cooks into a Fried Maggot, which restores 2 hunger points and 2.8 saturation. Cooking takes 5 seconds in a furnace, 2.5 seconds in a smoker and 8 seconds on a campfire. Each recipe gives 1 experience.

The Corpse Maggot is also a crafting ingredient for rotten soil, which is made from dirt, a Corpse Maggot and rotten flesh. Both mobs have spawn eggs: the Corpse Maggot Spawn Egg and the Corpse Fly Spawn Egg.

Tips

• Light the tunnels you use. A covered spawn tile must be fully dark for a Corpse Fly to spawn there, so a few light sources in a cave stop spawns in those spots.
• Fight zombies when you need Corpse Maggots. Each zombie-type death has a 15% chance to summon one, so a group of zombies produces a steady supply.
• Breaking rotten soil in survival mode gives a 25% chance of a Corpse Maggot, which makes it a direct source when you need one.
• A Corpse Maggot can be cooked in a furnace, smoker or campfire for a quick, cheap food.
