The Glowing Grotto is an underground cave biome added by Biomes O' Plenty. It is one of two cave biomes the mod adds to the overworld, alongside Spider Nest. Its floors and ceilings are covered in glowing fungi, moss and hanging silk, so it is one of the few places underground where a player can find light sources without crafting them. Its population is mostly hostile, and the pack's horror mobs are common here, so it is a place to enter with light and a plan.

Description

The Glowing Grotto is a cave biome. Its terrain is carved by the standard vanilla cave and canyon carvers, so it appears as open underground chambers and passages rather than as surface terrain. The floor is a mix of bare stone, mud patches and clusters of glowing fungi and glowing moss carpet. The ceiling is hung with glowworm silk, which forms long, thin strands. Patches of glowing moss and glowshrooms give the biome its name, and their light makes the chambers easier to read than most other caves.

The biome's fog is pale blue and its water is a deep blue (water colour #3f76e4). Its ambient cave sounds play every 6000 ticks, and its music is the vanilla dripstone caves track. Water in the grotto is tagged as a dirty-water biome by Tough As Nails, so water collected there is treated as dirty when that mod is installed.

Generation

The Glowing Grotto is a rare biome. It has a temperature of 0.5 and a downfall of 0.5, and it has rain. On the surface it makes up 0.01% of land, so it is almost never seen from above. Its real presence is in the underground cave layer. At Y = -30 it makes up 5.13% of the cave layer, which makes it a common cave type in Fear Nightfall but not a dominant one.

Vanilla strongholds are biased toward this biome, so a stronghold is more likely to be placed near a Glowing Grotto than near most other biomes.

Fear Nightfall does not weight the Glowing Grotto with the 6× horror weighting that the pack applies to Dark Forest, Spider Nest, Deep Dark and other horror biomes. It uses the standard cave distribution from the biome table. It is still a horror-leaning biome because of its mobs and structures, described below.

Serene Seasons lists the Glowing Grotto as a blacklisted biome, so seasonal temperature changes do not apply here.

Features

  • Glowing fungi: Glowshrooms grow on the floor. They emit light level 6, and their huge variant has a glowshroom block that emits light level 10. The biome has small, medium, huge and giant glowshroom cave features.
  • Glowing moss: Floor patches of glowing moss block and carpet emit light level 6. Carpets are weighted much more heavily than glowshrooms in the floor placement.
  • Glowworm silk: Silk strands hang from the ceiling. Each strand can be up to 12 blocks long, and most are short. Glowworm silk emits light level 2. See Glowworm Silk and Glowing Moss for the item.
  • Mud patches: Mud patches cover parts of the floor and are placed with 24 attempts per chunk.
  • Ores: The biome has the standard vanilla cave ores, including coal, iron, gold, redstone, lapis and diamond. It also has ore features from the pack's other mods, including infected diamond ore and black argillite from Born in Chaos, mithril ore from the Iron's Spellbooks mod, and sulfur ore from Butchery.
  • Vegetation: Glow lichen, tall grass and plains-style trees and flowers also appear in the biome.

Mobs and structures

The biome spawns a wide mix of hostile mobs. The most common are spiders, skeletons, creepers, slimes and zombies, each with a high weight. Horror mobs from Born in Chaos and other mods also spawn here, including Dread Hound, Necromancer, Spirit of Chaos and Restless Spirit. Golems also spawn in the biome, including Coal Golem and Slime Golem.

The biome has a water-based population as well. Fish and squid spawn in its pools, and some of them, such as Corpse Fish and Glutton Fish, come from Born in Chaos. Hostile mob weights and the full list of structures are in the tables below.

Tips

  • Bring a light source and a way to mark your path. The glowing fungi and moss light only parts of the cave.
  • Expect hostile mobs at all times. Because the biome is underground, a player can meet them in full daylight.
  • The biome has a large number of horror mobs, including Dread Hound and Spirit of Chaos. Check the spawn table before entering, and keep an escape route open.
  • Glowworm silk is useful for trim materials. It is also a rare Wandering Trader trade.
  • The biome is rare on the surface, so look for it in the underground cave layer, where it is most common at Y = -30.
