The Flesh and Visceral Heap Blocks are a family of organic blocks added by Biomes O' Plenty. They make up the surface and decoration of the Visceral Heap, one of the five Biomes O' Plenty Nether biomes, and Flesh can also be crafted by hand from rotten flesh and a Blood Bucket. The family includes Flesh, Porous Flesh, Flesh Tendons, Flesh Tendons Strand, Eyebulb, Hair and Pus Bubble. Several of these blocks react to entities, projectiles or nearby fluid.
Flesh is the core block of the family. When a Blood fluid is adjacent to a Flesh block, the block can grow Hair, Pus Bubble, Eyebulb or Flesh Tendons into empty spaces around it, so the family spreads wherever Blood fluid is present.
Obtaining
The blocks come from three sources: natural generation in the Visceral Heap, crafting Flesh, and the growth behaviour of Flesh described under Growth below.
Natural generation
Visceral Heap uses a flesh surface rule: any block directly under a ceiling or on a floor in the biome is replaced with Flesh. The biome's underground decoration step also places the following features:
- Blood lake and Blood spring features, which place Blood fluid.
- Flesh Tendons, hanging Flesh Tendons and Porous Flesh.
- Pus Bubbles, Eyebulbs and Hair.
- Nether bone spines.
The biome has no precipitation and a temperature of 2.0. Its mob spawn table contains Ghasts (weight 50, group size 4), Zombified Piglins (weight 100, group size 4) and Striders (weight 60, group size 1 to 2, creature category).
Crafting
Flesh is crafted from four Rotten Flesh around a Blood Bucket, in the cross pattern shown below.
Shearing
Shears convert Flesh into Porous Flesh. Using shears on the block replaces it with Porous Flesh, plays a pumpkin-carving sound and drops one Rotten Flesh. The shears lose one point of durability.
Usage
Growth
Flesh and Porous Flesh use the same random tick. Each random tick, the block checks whether any of its six neighbouring positions contains a Blood fluid. If one does, there is a 1 in 15 chance that the block tries to grow. A growth attempt chooses one of four options with equal chance, and each option only succeeds when the target space is empty:
| Growth | Placed at | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Hair | Above the Flesh | Space above is empty |
| Pus Bubble | Above the Flesh | Space above is empty |
| Eyebulb | Above the Flesh, two blocks tall | Spaces above are empty |
| Flesh Tendons | Below the Flesh | Space below is empty |
Growth therefore depends on the number of random ticks the block receives, which is set by the world's random tick speed.
Movement
Flesh slows horizontal movement. An entity standing on a Flesh or Porous Flesh block has its horizontal velocity multiplied by 0.95 each tick, and its vertical velocity is unchanged. Flesh Tendons and Flesh Tendons Strand are climbable.
Flesh Tendons
Flesh Tendons are a hanging strand. The bottom block attaches to Flesh or Flesh Tendons above it, and the strand extends downward through Flesh Tendons Strand blocks. The bottom block has 26 growth stages (age 0 to 25). Each client tick, there is a 1 in 7 chance that the bottom block shows a dripping blood particle.
Pus Bubble
Pus Bubble is a small block that pops when a living entity moves into it. The pop destroys the block without dropping anything and spawns pus particles. Projectiles that hit the block also destroy it, and an explosion next to it spawns particles. The block only drops itself when broken with a Silk Touch tool.
Eyebulb
Eyebulb is a two-block-tall plant. It can only be placed on Flesh-decoration-placeable blocks, which are Netherrack, Bone Block and the Flesh family. The upper half cannot exist without the lower half. Only the lower half drops the Eyebulb item when broken.
Hair
Hair is a thin plant that can only be placed on the same blocks as Eyebulb and Pus Bubble. It is replaced by any block placed over it. Hair drops only when collected with shears.
Items
The table below lists each block's stackability, hardness, blast resistance and harvesting tool.
- Flesh: the base block. It is the only member with a crafting recipe and the only one that grows the rest of the family.
- Porous Flesh: created by shearing Flesh. It has the same growth and movement behaviour as Flesh.
- Flesh Tendons: a hanging strand that is climbable and can be mined with an axe. See Flesh Tendons under Usage.
- Flesh Tendons Strand: the non-bottom segment of Flesh Tendons. It is climbable and mined with an axe.
- Eyebulb: a two-block-tall plant that drops only from its lower half.
- Hair: a plant that drops only when collected with shears.
- Pus Bubble: a block that pops when a living entity enters it. It drops itself only with Silk Touch.
