Wasteland is a hot, dry overworld biome added by Biomes O' Plenty. It never rains or snows here, vegetation is sparse and mostly dead, and the palette is dusty tan. It covers about 0.84% of the land surface in Fear Nightfall. Its hostile spawn table is one of the largest in the pack, mixing vanilla hostile mobs with many horror mobs, so it is a dangerous biome to cross at night. Players come here for the ore veins, which include the pack's Black Argillite, Sulfur and Mithril.
The Wasteland Steppe is a separate, smaller biome that shares this biome's spawn tables, ore features and much of its structure list, but has its own colours and surface share. This article covers only the Wasteland.
Description
The Wasteland has very little living cover. Its grass colour is #ad9364, a sandy tan, and its foliage colour is #b5a76c, a dry olive-yellow. The sky is a muted blue-grey (#89a3b7) and the fog is a pale cream (#dbddc1). Water is dark brown (#433721), which makes ponds and springs hard to read at a glance. Spring water, spring lava and an underwater magma feature all generate in the biome.
The ambient sound is the cave mood sound, played every 6000 ticks, and the background music is the overworld desert track. A rare mycelium particle (chance 0.00357 per tick) drifts through the air.
Trees are sparse, and most of them are dead. Two tree types grow here:
- The default tree is a twiglet tree, 6 to 10 blocks tall, with no leaves.
- About one tree in five is a big dead tree, a dead log trunk 1 block wide, 5 to 10 blocks tall, with dead leaves.
Trees appear in only a small share of chunk attempts, so most chunks have none. Ground cover is dead grass and desert grass in patches, and wilted lilies grow in small clumps. Wilted Lily is the biome's flower. When used in suspicious stew it gives the Unluck effect.
Generation
The Wasteland sits at the hot, dry end of the climate range, with temperature 2.0 and downfall 0. It is tagged as hot, dry and sparse vegetation, and the mod's wasteland tag applies to it. Its surface share is 0.84% of land, and its share of the cave layer at y=-30 is 0.23%.
The biome is tagged as stronghold-biased, so strongholds can generate toward it, and 165 structures are able to generate in it.
In Fear Nightfall the horror structures here, including the Born in Chaos Firewell and the Catacombs, are placed about 30% closer together than in the default pack. The Wasteland is not one of the biomes that the pack weights 6× for horror. That weighting goes to humid forests, swamps and similar biomes, while dry biomes such as this one stay mostly normal in the pack's distribution.
Features
The Wasteland uses the standard overworld ore pass, so coal, copper, iron, gold, redstone and lapis generate here, as do diamonds in their normal, buried and large forms. Gravel, dirt, tuff and the granite, diorite and andesite veins also generate.
The biome adds ores and features from other mods:
- Black Argillite, a dark stone from Born in Chaos.
- An infected variant of diamond ore from Born in Chaos.
- Deepslate Sulfur ore from the Butchery mod.
- Mithril ore from Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks.
Other placed features include cave urns and wild flax patches from Supplementaries, wild tomato patches from Farmer's Delight, and cliff features.
Mobs and structures
The vanilla hostile mobs are the most common spawns here: spiders, skeletons, creepers and slimes at weight 100, and zombies at weight 95. Horror mobs fill out the rest of the table. The notable ones are Necromancer (weight 18), Decaying Zombie (weight 15), Dread Hound (weight 7), Nightmare (weight 7), Dark Vortex (weight 7), Bloody Gadfly (weight 7), and Mr. Pumpkin (weight 7). Slime Golem has weight 25. The rarest hostile entries, Krampus, Lifestealer and Supreme Bonescaller, each have weight 1.
Water spawns are fish and squid, including Corpse Fish and Glutton Fish from the water creature table. The only ambient mob is the bat, with weight 10.
The full spawn and structure tables are generated below. The structures worth knowing about are:
- Firewell, a Born in Chaos structure.
- Catacombs.
- Illager Hideout, from Nova Structures.
- Pillager Outposts.

Tips
- Bring water. It never rains here, and the dark brown water is the only water you will find on the surface.
- Plan for night. The hostile table is long and the horror structures are placed closer together, so build or find shelter before dark.
- Check the water before you step in. The dark brown colour makes ponds and springs hard to read, and spring lava is among the features that generate here.
- Bring your own wood. Trees are sparse and most of them are dead, so do not count on finding wood nearby.
- Mine for Mithril and Sulfur. These are the pack-specific ores worth the trip, and they sit alongside the usual vanilla ore veins.
