Formations: Overworld Natural Formations are six surface structures that the Formations Overworld mod (formationsoverworld) adds to the overworld. They are the mod's terrain-scale formations, as opposed to its huts, camps and temples: Formations: Overworld Huts and Camps and Formations: Overworld Temples and Ruins. The six are cobble holes, copper spires, ice spires, log spikes, meteors and stone ore spikes. Each is a single formation built from vanilla blocks, and only some of them contain spawners or chests. The mod requires the Formations library to generate them.
These formations are not horror structures in Fear Nightfall. The pack's horror placement changes do not apply to them, so they keep the default weighting. Two of them, cobble holes and log spikes, contain spawners, so they can still be dangerous at any hour.

Generation
All six belong to the mod's uncommon structure set and use the same random-spread placement on the surface. In game they are spaced 28 chunks apart with a separation of 15 chunks. The mod's default spacing is about 15 chunks; the pack's Sparse Structures setup spreads them out. Each formation has weight 1 in a set with a total weight of 32, so the infobox shows a share of 1/32 before biome filtering. A formation spawns only in the biomes it is eligible for, and in those biomes it competes with the other eligible members of the set.
The biome lists differ from the mod's own assignments. The mod targets vanilla biomes and vanilla biome tags. The pack's biome distribution also places these structures in matching modded biomes, which is why the in-game counts are much larger. In vanilla terms:
- Cobble holes appear in old-growth spruce and pine taiga. In the pack they appear in 14 biomes.
- Copper spires and stone ore spikes appear in forests, taiga, deserts, plains and snowy plains. Stone ore spikes also appear in mountains. Copper spires also appear in savanna. Each appears in 157 biomes in the pack.
- Ice spires appear in frozen ocean, deep frozen ocean and ice spikes biomes. In the pack they appear in 12 biomes, which include cold and dry biomes such as snowy badlands and cold desert.
- Log spikes appear in forests. In the pack they appear in 62 biomes.
- Meteors appear in forest, badlands, jungle and taiga biomes. In the pack they appear in 130 biomes.
Rarity varies widely. In a 26 km² survey of the overworld, stone ore spikes were the most common at 7 instances. Copper spires had 2, and cobble holes, log spikes and meteors had 1 each. The survey found no ice spires.
Layout
Each formation has its own shape and materials. The sizes below are the bounding box of the structure.
Cobble hole
A cobble hole is about 32×32×32 blocks and is built mostly from cobblestone and podzol, with bone block and skull decoration. It has two templates. The second template contains a monster spawner with skeletons, a dropper, and redstone wire. It has no ice, copper or ore.
Copper spire
A copper spire is about 36×34×35 blocks. It is a tower of copper blocks on stone bricks, with stone brick slabs and grass at its base. It uses a single template, has no spawners and holds no chests.
Ice spire
Ice spires are made of packed ice and ice, with the rest of the formation being air. They use a single template, have no spawners and hold no chests. The mod does not record a typical size for them.
Log spikes
Log spikes are about 31×30×32 blocks, built from oak logs with tall grass and grass blocks. They have four templates. Each template contains a monster spawner, and at least one template holds a chest. The spawners are described in the Inhabitants section below.
Meteor
A meteor is about 36×29×37 blocks, made of stone, dirt and blackstone, with grass. Its distinctive blocks are gilded blackstone and ancient debris. It has two templates and no spawners or chests.
Stone ore spikes
Stone ore spikes are about 36×36×36 blocks, made of stone with exposed ore. The ore includes gold, iron, lapis lazuli, emerald and diamond ore, with grass blocks at the base. It has two templates and no spawners or chests.
Inhabitants
The formations hold spawners in only two cases:
- Cobble holes have a skeleton spawner in one of their two templates.
- Log spikes have a spawner in each of their four templates. Two of the templates spawn cave spiders and two spawn spiders.
Spawners in these structures use vanilla rules, so they spawn mobs regardless of light level. The mod adds no spawn rules of its own. The other four formations have no spawners and no mobs placed in them. Copper spires, ice spires, meteors and stone ore spikes are safe to approach unless the surrounding area holds other threats.
Loot
Only cobble holes and log spikes have chests and loot tables. Their loot is themed to the spawners that accompany them. The generated loot tables below show the full contents.
- Cobble hole chests have one to two rolls on a pool of iron and gold nuggets, enchanted chainmail armour, and an enchanted iron sword and iron pickaxe. A second pool adds arrows, bones and rotten flesh. The enchanted chainmail and iron tools are the most valuable items.
- Log spikes chests have four to six rolls on a pool of string, arrows, bones, bone meal and rotten flesh. Zero or one roll on a weapon pool adds a sword, a bow, a shield, a name tag or horse armour. The enchanted swords and bow are the most valuable items.
The other four formations have no loot.

Tips
- Approach a log spikes formation with a sword ready. Its spawners produce spiders and cave spiders at any time, so keep an eye on your surroundings while you loot the chests.
- At a cobble hole, expect skeletons from the spawner. Shields block their arrows, so bring one.
- Ancient debris on a meteor needs a diamond or netherite pickaxe.
- Stone ore spikes contain diamond and emerald ore, which need an iron pickaxe to mine. Gold ore and iron ore also need an iron pickaxe, and lapis lazuli needs a stone pickaxe.
- Ice spires were not found in the survey, so they are the hardest formation to locate. Look in frozen ocean and ice spikes biomes first.
