The Glacial Chasm is a cold surface biome added by Terralith. It is a canyon biome: the terrain is cut by deep canyons whose floors are covered in snow and ice. Its share of the land surface is 0.19%, which makes it one of the more common Terralith cold biomes in Fear Nightfall, but it is still a biome players reach by travelling. Its monster spawns are dense and include several horror mobs added by the pack, so it is a dangerous place to cross, particularly after dark.

Description

The Glacial Chasm is cut by canyons, using the canyon carver as well as the standard cave carvers. The canyon floors and walls are covered by a snow-and-ice surface. Snow block patches, one to two blocks deep and up to a few blocks across, sit on top of the ice, and the freeze pass places one to three layers of snow on the exposed ground. Blue ice is set into the stone, and icicles hang from rock faces. Shallow puddles lie in the ground.

The biome has no trees. Its plant life is limited to flowers, glow lichen, brown and red mushrooms, grass patches of the badlands type, sugar cane and pumpkin patches. The fog colour is a pale blue-white (#c0d8ff) and the sky colour is a cold blue (#78a7ff). The water is a deep blue (#3f76e4), and the underwater fog is a dark navy (#050533). The biome plays the ambient cave sound at long intervals, so it is quiet most of the time.

Generation

The Glacial Chasm has a temperature of 0 and a downfall of 0.5, and its precipitation is snow. Its climate is cold and snowy, and it is a cold-climate biome in the overworld.

The biome covers 0.19% of the land surface in Fear Nightfall. The pack does not give it the 6× horror weighting used for biomes such as the Dark Forest and the Deep Dark, so its rarity is set by the normal Terralith share. Its structure list is long, at 189 structures, and many of them come from the pack's horror mods. Those structures are placed about 30% closer together than the vanilla spacing, and where they share a structure set with other structures they are weighted at 6×. See the table below for the structures that can generate here.

Features

The Glacial Chasm has the following features:

  • Surface and ice: glacial snow surfaces on the canyon floors, blue ice veins in stone, icicles hanging from rock, ice patches and a top layer of snow.
  • Water: puddles in the ground, and lava lakes.
  • Plants: flowers, glow lichen, brown and red mushrooms, grass patches of the badlands type, sugar cane and pumpkin patches. The biome has no tree features.
  • Ores: the standard overworld ores, including coal, iron, gold, redstone, copper, lapis lazuli and diamond, with the usual granite, diorite, andesite, tuff and gravel veins. Sand, clay and gravel disks, and underwater magma, also generate. The pack adds its own ores here: Born in Chaos adds infected diamond ore, Butchery adds sulfur ore (see Sulfur), and Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks adds Mithril ore.
  • Caves and underground: lava lakes on the surface and underground, amethyst geodes, monster rooms and deep monster rooms. The biome uses the cave, extra underground cave and canyon carvers.

Mobs and structures

The monster table is led by spiders, creepers, slimes (weight 100 each) and zombies (weight 95). Strays (weight 80) and skeletons (weight 20) are also common. Revenants and slime golems spawn at weight 25, and necromancers at weight 18.

The pack-added horror mobs have low weights. Nightmares and dread hounds spawn at weight 7, spirits of chaos at weight 4, and nightmare stalkers and dire hound leaders at weight 2. Rarer monsters include a single mutant enderman and a single krampus at weight 1. Passive and ambient creatures are rabbits (weight 10), Shima Enaga (weight 3), polar bears (weight 1) and bats (weight 10). The water creatures are glow squids, Corpse Fish and Glutton Fish.

The most notable structures are the Ice Spider Den and the Impaled Icebreaker, both from Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks. The Glacial Hut and Igloo from Terralith and the igloo also generate here. The pack's horror structures include Catacombs and the Born in Chaos graves and dark tower. The table below lists every structure the biome can generate.

Tips

  • Hostile mobs spawn in darkness, and the monster weights above are high. Carry light and plan a route before crossing the open canyon floors.
  • The snow and ice surfaces are slippery to walk on, and the canyon walls are steep.
  • The Ice Spider Den and the Impaled Icebreaker are among the more dangerous structures on the list, so enter them with full armour and a ranged weapon.
  • Use the table below to see which structures can generate here before exploring.
  • The pack's additional ores, mithril and sulfur among them, generate in this biome, so mining the stone here can yield materials that are otherwise hard to find.
