The Butchery mod, version 5.3.1 by Jmods, reworks how mobs die and how their meat is obtained. Killing most mobs with a cleaver, or with a weapon enchanted with Butcher's Touch, leaves a physical carcass block item instead of only the vanilla drops. Carcasses are hung on a hook, bled, drained and cut up with knives and cleavers into raw and cooked meats, organs, skins, bones and trophy heads. A player who wants food, leather or bone from mobs in Fear Nightfall will meet this mod early.
The mod adds roughly 455 block entries and 336 items, mostly as variants of a small number of families. It also adds two custom mobs, two fluids, a salt and sulfur worldgen layer, a villager trade set, a Patchouli guide and one structure.
Overview
Butchery builds a butchering loop from mob carcasses. A mob dies to a cleaver-class tool and leaves a carcass. The carcass is hung on a hook and bled into a blood grate or puddle. The drained carcass is then cut up on the hook, and the resulting cuts are cooked, salted, tanned or crafted. Each stage uses its own block and tool families, which are documented on the pages linked below.
The loop covers about 76 vanilla mob types, from common livestock to bosses. Hostile mobs, the player's own corpse and the Ender Dragon all leave butchery material. Some of the mod's items also carry risk. The Magic Wishbone, for example, can spawn zombies and TNT when it breaks.
Content
Blocks and items are grouped by use. Each group links to its own page.
- Carcasses: Carcasses and Corpses covers the carcass, drained carcass and corpse blocks for each supported mob, plus the player corpse item. Mob Parts covers organs, heads and head mounts. Iron Golem Parts covers the golem's head, arms, legs and body.
- Tools: Butchery Tools covers the cleaver, skinning knife, hammer and hacksaw in six material tiers each: copper, iron, gold, diamond, netherite and bone.
- Armor: Butchery Armor covers the evoker, pillager, vindicator, piglin brute, stray, witch, fur suit, butcher's apron, turtle shell and dragon scale sets. Dragon Scale covers the dragon scale material.
- Food: Butchery Meats covers the raw and cooked cuts, sausages and organ foods. Organs covers the heart, liver, kidney, lungs, stomach and intestines in raw, cooked and rotten forms.
- Hides and bones: Skins, Furs and Pelts covers the skins and the skin rack that turns them into leather. Special Bones and Bone Meal covers the wither and dragon bones.
- Chemistry and worldgen materials: Blood covers the blood fluid and blood blocks. Salt (Butchery) covers salt and the basin that produces it. Sulfur covers the sulfur ores.
- Workstations and decoration: Butchery Workstations covers the butchers' tables, displays and counters, along with the meat grinder, rotisserie and freezer. Taxidermy covers the head mounts made at the taxidermy table. Butcher Shop Decorations covers the rugs, statues, paintings, canopies and other decorative blocks.
- Enchantments: Butchery Enchantments covers Butcher's Touch and Hunter.
- Effects: Withered Heart and Pillager Friend covers the Withers Blessing effect and the Pillager Friend effect.
- Special items: Wishbones covers the Magic Wishbone and its break outcomes.
- Mobs: the mod adds a turtle shell boat and a dragon mob. The dragon appears only when an Ender Dragon dies, and the turtle shell boat is placed by the player. No mod mob spawns naturally.
- Structures: Vindicator Butcher's House is the mod's only structure.
Mechanics
Carcass drops. When a mob that has a carcass type dies, a carcass item drops at the death position. By default, the drop only happens when the killer holds a cleaver-class tool in the main hand, or when the weapon has Butcher's Touch (or the bow or crossbow has Hunter). This is the "Only Cleavers Drop Carcasses" setting, which is on by default. With it off, every kill of a carcass mob drops a carcass. Each mob type has its own config toggle. Turning off a mob's carcass also turns off the removal of that mob's vanilla drops, described below.
Removal of vanilla drops. When a carcass drops, the mod removes nearby item entities of the matching vanilla food or material, so the carcass replaces them. Affected items include beef, porkchop, mutton, chicken, rabbit, cod, salmon, pufferfish, leather, rotten flesh, bone, bone meal, gunpowder, ender pearls, slime balls, shulker shells and phantom membranes. The default scan radius is 20 blocks; Fear Nightfall reduces it to 4 blocks (see Butchery).
Bleeding. A carcass hung on a hook is bled with a knife or cleaver by main-hand right-click. Bleeding takes 900 ticks (45 seconds) by default. Blood fills a blood grate placed below the carcass. If there is no grate, a blood puddle forms instead, and blood can spread from there. When the timer ends, the carcass turns into its drained form. The "Instant Bleeding" setting skips the timer and drains the carcass at once, and is off by default.
Cutting up. A drained carcass on a hook is cut up with a main-hand right-click using a cleaver or skinning knife. Each carcass has its own loot tables, so the cuts depend on the mob. Looting applies to cut-up drops when the "Looting Enchantment" setting is on, which is the default. Organs are added when the "Organs" setting is on, which is also the default.
Skins and leather. A skin placed on a skin rack dries for 1800 ticks by default. The rack then gives 2 leather per retrieval. The drying time is a config value, but the check only works reliably at its default value.
Salt. The salt basin produces salt on a 1000-tick and 2000-tick cycle. The default yield is 1 item per cycle. Salt discs also appear on water-adjacent surfaces through worldgen.
Animal fat. Animal fat burns in a furnace for 650 ticks. It is a new fuel that the mod adds.
Magic Wishbone. Breaking a Magic Wishbone rolls one of 23 outcomes. The outcomes include spawning 5 to 16 zombies, spawning TNT, spawning a silverfish, a skeleton, a cave spider or a structure trap, several potion effects, and a loot roll. Chicken carcasses have a 25% chance to yield a wishbone by default. The full list is on the Wishbones page.
Withers Blessing. The Withers Blessing effect, applied by the wither heart item, gives each attack against the holder a 5% chance to apply Regeneration III and Damage Resistance (100) for 120 seconds.
Brain blocks and zombies. Zombies and their subclasses (husks, drowned, zombie villagers and zombified piglins) target Brain blocks within 4 blocks and break them.
Player corpses. When a player is killed with a cleaver or Butcher's Touch, a Player Corpse item named after the player drops. The item stores the player's name and UUID, and it renders as a custom corpse.
Ender Dragon. Killing the Ender Dragon spawns a dragon mob instead of the usual drop sequence. The dragon mob places an Ender Dragon carcass block as soon as there is a solid block below it. Dragon bone, dragon scale and dragon meat are the main rewards from this step.
Butcher villagers. Butcher villagers gain 18 new trade listings. The trades sell iron cleavers and iron skinning knives, along with sponges, blood grates, basins, hooks, cooked and raw cuts, skins, hearts and salmon. See Villager Trades.
Progression. Iron cleavers, iron skinning knives, iron hammers and iron hacksaws are the early tools, and butchers sell them. Gold, copper, diamond and netherite tiers follow. The bone tier is a separate line that can be crafted. Butcher's Touch and Hunter let a player get carcass drops without holding a cleaver. Dragon scale armor is the highest armor tier in the mod.
Changes to vanilla
Butchery changes the following vanilla behaviour. Each change applies to the butchery items and mobs named here.
- Carcass mobs drop carcass items on death, and nearby vanilla food and material items are removed (see Butchery).
- Ender Dragon death spawns a dragon mob instead of the vanilla drop sequence. The vanilla experience and egg handling are not changed.
- Right-clicks with butchery items, or on butchery blocks, are cancelled by the mod. Right-clicks that match nothing from the mod are not cancelled.
- Animal fat is a new furnace fuel with a burn time of 650 ticks.
- Butcher villagers gain 18 new trades. No vanilla trades are removed.
- Zombies and their subclasses gain a goal that makes them break Brain blocks.
- The mod's meat items and its cleavers, skinning knives, hammers, hacksaws and armor pieces are added to vanilla item tags. These include the meat tag, the sword, pickaxe and axe tags, and the chest, head, leg and foot armor tags. Vanilla tools and armor are not changed.
- Four rotten organ items are compostable at a 30% chance.
- The mod adds potion recipes that use vanilla Awkward, Water, Slow Falling and Poison potions as bases.
- The dragon and warden smithing templates are added to end city and ancient city chests as global loot modifiers. Vanilla loot tables are not replaced.
- Sulfur ore and salt discs are added to every biome as worldgen features. Sulfur ore has 2 veins per chunk, and deepslate sulfur ore has 10 veins per chunk. Salt discs appear in 1 of every 8 chunks, on water-adjacent surfaces.
- The Vindicator Butcher's House structure is added to birch forest, dark forest, plains, savanna, swamp and wooded badlands biomes.
In Fear Nightfall
The pack changes the following on top of the mod:
- Cleaver cleanup radius. The pack shortens the item-removal radius of the butchery kill commands from 20 blocks to 4 blocks. Vanilla item drops near a carcass death are removed only within 4 blocks.
- Structure chest loot. Loot from Butchery reaches the chests that the pack maps to vanilla chests, such as village, dungeon and stronghold chests.
