The Skins, Furs and Pelts are the hides and coats that Butchery adds from most animal carcasses. Skins are the raw hides of cows, pigs, horses, llamas, pandas and dozens of other animals; furs and pelts come from cats, wolves and sniffers. Skins are used for crafting decorative rugs and armour, and they can be processed on a Skin Rack into leather. Because Butchery replaces most vanilla animal drops with carcass-based loot, skins are the main source of hides in the pack.
Each skin, fur and pelt stacks to 64. Most skins carry the butchery:skins item tag, and cat fur, wolf pelts and sniffer fur carry the common c:fur tag, so mods that read these tags treat them as hides and fur.
Obtaining
Skins and furs come from the cut-up stage of carcass processing. A carcass is dropped when its mob dies, hung on a hook and bled, then cut with a cleaver or skinning knife once it is drained. Several cut-up procedures roll a skin drop table as one of their results, and Looting applies to these rolls when the Looting Enchantment option is on (default on). The skin itself is not affected by the Only Cleavers Drop Carcasses option, which only controls whether a carcass drops at all. See Butchering and Carcasses and Corpses for the full sequence.
Cat carcasses, wolf carcasses and sniffer carcasses produce fur or pelts during their cut-up stages. Wolf cut-ups use the wolf skin drop, and sniffer cut-ups use the sniffer fur drop.
The horse skins are also found in structure chests. The chestnut horse skin appears in its chest loot table with a 100% chance per chest, and the pack adds Butchery loot to mapped chests (see Loot and Chests).
Crafting
Several skins are crafting ingredients, and the Skin Rack is crafted from sticks and string. See the recipe grids below.
Loot and drops
| Item | Chest loot table | Structures | Chance per chest | Avg. stack |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Horse Skin | butchery:blocks/chestnut_horse_skin_drop | 100.0% | 1.0 |
Trading
The Butcher villager sells skins as part of its 18-listing Butchery trade set. Trades use emerald pricing, and each listing has a maximum of 10 uses.
| Trader | Level | Cost | Result | Max uses |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Butcher | 3 | Cow Skin ×1 | Emerald ×2 | 10 |
| Butcher | 3 | Ocelot Skin ×1 | Emerald ×2 | 10 |
| Butcher | 3 | Creeper Skin ×1 | Emerald ×2 | 10 |
Usage
Skins are mainly processed on a Skin Rack into leather, or used as crafting ingredients for rugs and armour. Pig skins can also be cooked directly into crackling.
Skin Rack and leather
A Skin Rack holds one skin at a time. A skin is placed on the rack by right-clicking with the skin in the main hand. The rack then needs a sponge or rag, which wets the skin. The drying timer only advances while the skin is wet. After Skin Drying Time ticks (default 1800, or 90 seconds), the skin is dry. Right-clicking the rack with an empty main hand then gives Skin Rack Yield leather (default 2). Retrieving a skin before it has dried returns the skin itself.
The Skin Drying Time option is compared to the timer with exact equality, so a non-integer value never completes the drying step. Keep it at a whole number.
Pig skin and crackling
Pig skins cook into crackling in a campfire, a smoker and a furnace-style smelter. Campfire cooking takes 200 ticks, smoking takes 100 ticks, and smelting takes 200 ticks. Each gives 1.0 experience.
Rugs and armour
Panda rugs and polar bear rugs are made from skins, and polar bear rugs also need a polar bear head. See the recipe grids above and the usage table below for the full list of recipes.
Goat skins are used in crafting recipes for a Butcher's Apron. The listed apron recipes use eight goat skins each.
Fur Suit
The Fur Suit is an armour set made from wolf pelts. It is made of four pieces: helmet, chestplate, leggings and boots. Each piece has the following armour values:
| Piece | Armour points |
|---|---|
| Helmet | 2 |
| Chestplate | 6 |
| Leggings | 5 |
| Boots | 2 |
The full set gives 15 armour points, the same total as full iron armour, with no armour toughness and no knockback resistance. The enchantability value is 9, and the repair material is wolf pelt. Each piece has 15 times the base durability of its type, which gives 165 for the helmet, 240 for the chestplate, 225 for the leggings and 195 for the boots.
