The Butcher is a boss-class hostile mob added by Sons of Sins. It has 650 health (325 hearts) and 50 attack damage, and it has a follow range of 128 blocks, so it keeps pursuing a target over long distances. It drops the Butcher Cleaver along with a Bloody Bone, and it is a dangerous fight for an unprepared player.

Spawning

The Butcher has no natural spawn entries and does not appear in the world on its own. It is obtained by placing a Butcher Spawn Egg (stackable to 64), which summons one Butcher at the point of use. No other source of Butchers was found in the mod's data.

Does not spawn naturally in any biome (see Obtaining/Spawning text).

Behavior

The Butcher is a persistent monster: it never despawns and does not disappear when players move away. It ignores fall, drowning and dragon breath damage. It is slow (movement speed 0.4) but has a follow range of 128 blocks and a knockback resistance of 0.9, so it is hard to push back.

Its target priority is players first, then animals. It retaliates against any attacker. It grants no experience when killed.

Its combat behaviour has three parts:

  • Melee. When a target is within 1.5 blocks and in line of sight, the Butcher swings for 50 damage.
  • Ranged. It fires Null Pr projectiles at its target on a 20-tick interval.
  • Stuck and grab. If the Butcher is blocked from moving forward for 50 ticks, it becomes stuck. While stuck, it destroys blocks in a 3 by 3 by 3 area around the block it is facing, skipping blocks in the wither_immune tag and dropping nothing from them. If its target comes within about 1.75 blocks, the Butcher can seize it as a passenger. A seized player is held under Darkness for 40 ticks and Slowness for the duration of the scream animation. When the scream ends, the rider takes the Butcher's attack damage of 50 and is released.

When it is not stuck, its attack hits every entity within 3 blocks for 50 damage and pushes them away. While it has a target, the Butcher applies Insanity for 20 ticks to that target whenever the target is within 64 blocks (Manhattan distance). The Butcher is pushed out of water and lava while it has a target, so water and lava do not stop it from pursuing.

The Butcher is a sin creature in the mod's tag system. Sinful tools deal four times their normal damage to it, and the Butcher Cleaver counts as a slicer weapon, so its hits clear the target's hit invulnerability.

Fear Nightfall does not change the Butcher's stats or attacks. Its stats are the mod's defaults.

Drops

The Butcher always drops one Bloody Bone and one Butcher Cleaver. Its loot table has no looting bonus; each entry sets a fixed count of one. Kills made with the Butcher's own attacks also count as slicer kills in the mod's death handling, so they drop organs in the same way as slicer kills.

ItemAmountConditions
Bloody Bonex1.0-1.0
Butcher Cleaverx1.0-1.0
  • Butcher Cleaver (sons_of_sins:butcher_cleaver) is the Butcher's signature drop. It has 1601 durability, 8 attack damage and 1.1 attack speed, cannot be stacked, and is fire resistant. For each point of health the wielder is missing, it adds 2 attack damage, so its damage rises as the player's health falls.
  • Butcher Spawn Egg (sons_of_sins:butcher_spawn_egg) summons a Butcher when used.
  • Bloody Bone (sons_of_sins:bloody_bone) is the second drop, a material from the mod's organ and blood items.
  • The cleaver is one of the slicer weapons described in Blood Pools, Slicing and Ether Ashes.

Tips

Summon a Butcher only in a place where you have room to retreat, because its 50 damage kills a player in one or two hits and it closes distance quickly. Keep health high when you fight it: the Butcher Cleaver's bonus is worth most when you are hurt, but a single mistake at low health is fatal. Sinful tools deal four times their damage against it, so they are the strongest choice for this fight. Walls are not a safe barrier, because a stuck Butcher breaks through blocks.
